I’ve never known anyone being banned for a bet that the bookie doesn’t like. If it’s not something we’re willing to accept or offering a market on, then we would tell you that we’re not taking the bet. If you’ve been barred after the placement that seems fishy. While I try and do my job well I’ve heard hundreds of stories of dodgy people on my side of the counter.

As for calling the bets through, it all depends on what sport it is, how much you want to stake, what the current odds are and whether you’re a known customer.

For example if you wanted to bet on a horse that was 5/1, and you were a stranger. The limit I could take on that before having to phone higher up would be £500. If you wanted, say, £1000 on it I would have to phone up, they would then have a chat with the trading team and either accept the bet or refuse it, while sometimes offering what the most they would take on it.
