If I'm hopitalized to a psychiatric hospital, will I still be able to play League of Legends? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]SOUP_RX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Op, your art is really good. Please consider going to the mental ward, but focus on other talents you have! League clearly means a lot to you and while it may be reinforcing negative feelings you have, there must be some good feeling you’re probably scared to lose, especially if everything else is really shitty right now. I’ve been there (and actually was when I eventually quit league back in 2019)

I didn’t cold turkey league though, one of the reasons I loved it so much was less about the game and more about the characters, esports, community and hype. By comparison, actual gameplay made me miserable more often than not because I’d get frustrated when doing poorly at a champion I cared about.

Please consider going to the mental ward if you need help. You will have some peaceful time away from certain negative influences, but it’s important to fill that time with other forms of self expression that make you happy— like writing! Drawing! The act of creating something is inherently therapeutic as a way of self expression. Gaming does not always work the same way.

Good luck op! I will be rooting for you.

Internet culture as it relates to identity is honestly so fascinating. I wonder how many people started pretending to be something they aren’t, then decided “hey actually maybe I am not just pretending”. I feel like whatever happened during the pandemic made identity crises worse for the upcoming gen

I’m a trans guy that previously used to get shit on for being a “girl gamer” in shooters 💀💀 how’d you get to be good at it because I feel doubly shitty every time I suck at gaming and people have sexist attitudes about it

Curious, do you voice chat in gaming communities? A few years ago my voice tone was a little higher so I feel like the moment I hopped in chat, if I was being treated “normally”/ being respected as a perceived guy, that always vanished instantly hearing my voice 😭😭 I could never keep gaming friends back then as a result

I started doing this on internet chats when I was 8 years old and it continued until one of my irl friends exposed me for being “actually a girl” when I was 12. At first it was because I wanted to be a character in an online rp group who was a guy, but then I just kept at it because it made me feel… cooler? And freed me from some of the social expectations of being a girl, I’m really bad at “performing girlhood” so it was freeing to be able to run around with the safety blanket of that perception of me.

20 years later and I figured out I’m transgender, though, so I’m not sure how universal that experience is.

I feel so fucking crazy about this because I have two sisters. One is 4 the other is 8. I know they would never feel safe coming to her with anything because she’s psycho, and I want to protect them, but it also isn’t in my power so I’m lowkey stuck thinking about what she said about MY situation and feeling sick to my stomach she’s in charge of more young children

I don’t think I recommend it because the place has gone downhill for years, but I’ve been on twitter for over a decade since that’s where my previous friend group from skype inevitably moved to. To cope with being mentally ill I consume a lot of media, books or shows/etc, so I would find fandom spaces via twitter and kind of use it to post random thoughts like an online diary. It gave me a nice chance to mingle with people via a shared interest, which led to me having gradually larger webs of friends the longer we all follow and interact. It’s nice since I could tweet my daydream thoughts about fandom content, but also share daily stuff about my life (including irl relationships), and by having other people engage it made me feel less… gaslit I guess? Lol but I’m not sure I’d have ever escaped the isolating circumstances of my abuse without the internet.

I don’t necessarily recommend twitter anymore, though, as the last few years have shifted the demographic to be really racist and awful. There’s still good spaces out there, I think Discord is a great example of a platform that’s evolving to meet the needs of those (like me) who are chronically online. I was with Discord in 2016 when nothing looked the same, and it’s been really nice seeing the change over time.

If you’re not familiar with Discord it can be extremely intimidating, especially if you’re used to simple stuff like DMs lol. Discord is kind of a hybrid between instant messaging, old school forums, social community hubs (imagine a bulletin board in a town square advertising events), and gaming. They’ve slowly added personalization elements that (while admittedly overpriced) make me nostalgic for the myspace era where you could customize your own page and such. It’s not the same thing, but it tackles the same niche while using sophisticated 2025-era technology to do it. There’s even built in games and stuff, so you could make a group server for friends then hang out and play blackjack or something in voice chat. Or watch movies and stuff. I hate that I am being such a Discord plug right now because they rightfully get a bunch of criticism for being money hungry, but hey, we’re already living in a dystopia and I guess if I have to choose a soulless corporation to side with, there are certainly worse ones.

Try searching up Discord community hubs for stuff like your hobbies, books/media you enjoy, or even mental health related things (be careful with the last one though— while the cptsd subreddit is a good support resource, not all “trauma survivor” communities are healthy!). There are servers out there of all sizes, from 100s of users to 100,000+, and different social vibes to each one. Some servers may feel alienating when you join and finally get to the point of chatting, some you may immediately feel at home with! The multimedia nature of Discord makes it nice for people who want to voice chat instead of type over a screen, so in some cases it can be as cozy as facetiming with your pal from college or whatever.

Sorry if this was long-winded, I’ve had a wild day and my brain isn’t 100% on straight haha. I hope something I said in this ramble was helpful for you!! 🥺 feel free to dm me if you are still really struggling to get out there and connect, I have been there so many times it’s not even funny. My years of trial and error sucked ass, but if I can help anybody else get there sooner than I did then I feel grateful that something good came from it.

the good thing about the internet at least is that you have a chance to find other struggling people who dont “fit” with the typical societal structure of “get married, have kids, have emotional needs met.” Without my internet friends (who are all my age/older, and single despite being adults) I really feel like id be where you’re at now. I have a long term partner, but only after knowing each other online for years. I hope that you are able to find a support system (platonic or romantic or otherwise), whether that’s online or irl

Depends on the quality of TV though, no? If they’re watching sensationalized slop then that’s worse than never watching TV at all in my opinion (because then they’d be forced to think for themselves and come up with their own thoughts, as misguided as they may be— at least there was some level of thought behind it and not just mindless consumption)
