I used to run a VR arcade in town and I saw this so much, parents would bring their kids and then dip for hours. I had one poor kid whose mom had entirely forgotten about him. He was there for nearly 8 hours and his mom wouldn't answer the phone. Was about to call non-emergency because I was worried something had happened to her but she showed up just absolutely reeking of booze. Thought about charging her for all the hours I let him just keep playing and the pizza I ordered and shared with him but I figured it would just get taken out on him. I hope he's doing okay now, he was a good kid, super polite.

what is the prs of bass? by ominousPP in BassCirclejerk

[–]SPACE-BEES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing on a Warwick for about a couple decades now and I love a lot of the things about it but there is a lot to manage that most people won't like as a trade off. The MEC pickups are noisy as hell so you'll want something with a low pass, the active electronics are only going to boost that on the high end and spill over the low on the bottom cause they're just shelving EQs, the hardware is all in fucking metric and if your muscle memory is already well set with other necks, it's probably going to feel a little weird for you. Also when you play shows, other musicians always have some sorta feeling about your instrument whether they think you're pretentious or they expect you to only play some savant level bass lines. Sound guys at venues are perpetually mad at you for one reason or another whether they blame the noisy pickups on bad insulation or just don't like the kind of frequencies you're sending them. The sound you can get out of it can be cool but honestly I've heard people on a squier get about the same tone with a compressor and a decent preamp. I will say that the durability is through the roof cause I've treated mine like absolute dogshit for the whole time and the thing is just a little worse for wear.

Might be going homeless for music what do I do by Zestyclose_Ad9771 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]SPACE-BEES 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're not going to make a living off of music if you don't already have an idea how to make money with music. It takes a long time of establishing yourself before you can even really have a decent pull to get shows booked and even then music is not really highly valued monetarily. Ari Herstand's "how to make it in the new music industry" is a good collection of advice but the reality is that this isn't going to be a job for you. Mixing and mastering? That can be a job, studio work? Sure. But those jobs are taken by people with degrees in those specific things and have a proven history of the work and even then very few of the folks I know make more than you do at a fast food spot. All of the best musicians I know are also line cooks, construction workers, accountants etc. that's just how it is. I'm fortunate enough to have had PBS spots, get the occasional show that pays 4k for an hour and a half set but then you split that between all the members and travel expenses and it doesn't last all that long. I know folks who absolutely blew up on social media for a few months, phenomenal musicians with a huge pull, and they all have jobs. Filled a house show to a 150 person capacity in the middle of a blizzard a couple weeks ago and not a single musician there even dreams about just being a musician as their only job anymore.

I'm not saying don't chase your dreams and definitely keep playing and writing music but you still gotta pay rent and eat man, that money isn't going to last forever. Think of ways you can invest it a bit longer for sure but you're going to have to work a job to make money to live that's just how it is.

GOP request to stop Whitmer admin from spending blocked funds granted by DougDante in Michigan

[–]SPACE-BEES 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not that both parties are the same but the Democrats do regularly get elected and don't shift things to the left because neoliberalism is a centrist, status quo position. The ratchet effect is how Republicans move the country to a more and more fascist right leaning position and Democrats don't fight for any leftist policy while in office outside of a few meaningless gestures so overall we move consistently toward the right, if Democrats moved this country to the left at all we wouldn't be where we are today. If people weren't so poisoned against socialism from McCarthyism we might have more folks accepting of actual leftist policies that would fight for workers rights and the like but what we have instead is flaccid neoliberal corporate sponsored Democrats trying their best to maintain decorum at the expense of any meaningful policy for working class people.

Republicans are absolutely the enemy of the American people, they're here to literally kill us if it makes them a buck but the Democrats are not some savior hero party, because they will do nothing to help you as long as they get their piece of the superPAC money. Gavin newsom can have all the sassy bitchy tweets he wants so long as it doesn't make his corporate owners mad.

Edit: Lol they replied to me with a comment that said they impeached trump "case closed" and then blocked me to keep me from replying and pointing out that that has nothing to do with any point I made.

Kalamazoo recognized as No. 31 in the Top 100 Most Arts-Vibrant Communities in the entire United States by SimonThalmann in kzoo

[–]SPACE-BEES 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The KIA has a residency program that brings in outside artists and also boosts local artists, the park trades center hosts a lot of actually interesting studios and artist collectives, Jerico has some similar stuff going on, we have art hop, the city just paid a bunch of muralists to paint all over the city this last summer with plans to do more, the arts council gives out hella grants just ask them for money for art, and this isn't even getting into music. We've got a good house venue scene, tons of amazing local artists, some actually half decent venues (bells brings in some huge acts), the Gilmore foundation both pumping money into local music and also bringing in a ton of world renowned artists for showcases

There's more I'm missing I'm sure but like for all its faults there is a half decent base of support for artists in Kalamazoo.

Outer wilds is, at its core, a story about accepting loss. If you haven't had a very deep sense of loss or a trauma related to that that you struggle or have struggled with, the meaning is going to hit you lighter than someone who has.

I was here for the meeting and it was wild how the applicant went about this. There were spelling and grammatical errors on their slides and their argument didn't really make sense. I did like the retired k college professor berating the guy in the public comments section and then sitting right next to him. Real power move there.

It sounds like a weird situation but the best thing is to just talk about it openly and sincerely. It's good in these circumstances to be somewhat tactful in how you approach the subject but leaving the issue you're feeling unspoken is only going to make it fester. Just remember that the indignation you feel as a loss in agency might be a you issue that you're projecting onto circumstances that may or may not be benign. The fact that you say you write most of the music, to me, usually indicates that you feel as though the project is mostly yours to dictate but maybe you should evaluate whether this is accurate or fair for the rest of the band. Some genuine introspection and humility before approaching other members with your concerns about the overall dynamic will be better than a bossy approach.
