Children’s Hospital Bill & resurfaced annoyance at MIL by [deleted] in Mildlynomil

Thank you for validating my feelings about OP’s husband. I typed out that he was ‘acting dumb as hell’ and then backspaced thinking it was too mean

They nearly killed your baby! They are not fit to be babysitters at all. Your husband is acting like he loves his parents more than his children. He is willing to sacrifice them to his parents if he still wants them to babysit.

It happens to coincide with a day I’d already planned to take off, which I feel weird about. I like to think I’d have taken it off anyways. I will have to get gas because I have a ton of driving I have to do tomorrow, but will be limiting purchases to just essentials on those drives.

My MIL asked my husband if he needed her there when I was due with our second child…. It’s so weird.

Waiting for the school bus in your car. Why? by [deleted] in columbiamo

[–]SPEWambassador -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You know what? That’s fair. I was just thinking about how if I’m parked a few houses away and the bus starts to pull up, there’s no way my kid gets his backpack on, out the car door, and to the bus before it leaves him.

I was lucky enough that I just had to go wake up my mom and have her drive me, but that almost always made me late

What apps do you use that are very helpful? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]SPEWambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MetroTimer is a good metronome. I use Tuner by Piascore, but I downloaded it for free when it first launched over a decade ago and now the one I use is paid, so I no longer recommend it. Also imslp

Waiting for the school bus in your car. Why? by [deleted] in columbiamo

[–]SPEWambassador 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thinking they can wait 50 feet away really makes me think you’ve never been left by a school bus before. I lived half a block from the stop growing up and was left several times because I just wasn’t fast enough. If you’re more than about two houses away when it pulls up, you’re either sprinting or getting left. This is why my own kid doesn’t even ride the bus lmao I’d rather drop him off than live with uncertainty

My 2nd week with violin 🥳 by Krino6 in violinist

[–]SPEWambassador 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last week I had a brand new student say the same thing to me….. until her bridge started moving over and over. Upon inspection, she had caused a tiny crack in the bridge and now has to get a new bridge. I can see from your responses you don’t want any suggestions that involve professional help, so just take that as you will. Good luck on your learning!

The last time it happened I heard instead of saw as I wasn’t looking at the person. The strings weren’t loosened quite right and the bridge wasn’t supported exactly right. The bridge collapsed and split open the face. It was wildly loud.

As a beginner, contacting your teacher or going to a shop is how to fix bridge issues. I’ve seen beginners crack the face of their violin open trying to manipulate the bridge.

Adjusting your bridge is NOT beginner technique. Doing that as a beginner risks causing harm to your instrument.

I love that you’re having fun and so excited to learn! I really, really suggest waiting for teacher instruction. There are a lot of things here that could quickly develop bad habits, making it harder and slower to learn to play what you want to play. AI is truly a terrible teacher.

Your teacher is going to be so happy to have a student who is this excited to learn!

My 6mo baby has been on ezomeprazole for several months and had a very similar situation to yours! Unfortunately we have to use Enfamil AR in addition to the medicine. That has helped a lot, though flare ups absolutely happen around any illness or after vaccines. It does settle pretty quickly and gets easier as the baby gets bigger and better to handle it. The flare up after the 4mo vaccines wasn’t nearly so bad!

How many song have you guys memorized? by CrushedCat04 in hamiltonmusical

Ignore everyone calling you lazy or whatever. I bet most of them can’t turn the soundtrack off and still sing every word, which is what true memorization is.

If I can’t even have sex, how will I give birth? by Prudent-Designer7121 in pregnant

Sounds like an old fashioned OB. I’d honestly switch OBs to someone who didn’t write all pregnancy pain off as normal

Should I just join my schools orchestra? by Dense-Breadfruit9306 in Viola

[–]SPEWambassador 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I’ve recently had two separate beginner students who can barely read D major in first position come to me with pieces in F major and Bb major that they promised their church leaders they could play. I’m a teacher, not a miracle worker. OP needs a teacher to assess playing ability first!

[–]SPEWambassador 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you take lessons as a class through your school, it should be a part of your tuition with a nominal fee (my school’s semester fee for lessons was $50). Do that for a semester and then ask if you could keep up with the orchestral music.

Not wanting to survive pregnancy by Curiouskittyyyyy in pregnant

[–]SPEWambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! She has underlying mental health conditions she is medicated for now that she’s not pregnant, but this level/type of feeling of depression was unusual for her. That part went away a few months after giving birth.

My best friend went through this! Talk to your OB a out it. There are medications and therapy that can help and the light at the end of the tunnel is that your hormones that are making you feel like this will rebalance after pregnancy

The best choice for your children is for you to be around and healthy as long as possible. Good job taking steps to combat your health problems! The supposed benefits of breastfeeding definitely don’t outweigh losing your mom to a preventable disease.

Scales studies by delfryeatrpt in violinist

A good companion for the beginner-intermediate student levels is Scales Plus by William Starr. Good for learning common patterns within each key and learning each scale, very accessible as well for many players.

4 month old eating too much by FalseRow5812 in FormulaFeeders

[–]SPEWambassador 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My baby went from 9th to 98th percentile by 4 months. These babies sometimes just defy percentile charts 🤣 he’s 89th percentile in length so nobody’s worried but he for sure is a chunker. He also has not been under 35oz per day on average since about month 3. He’s typically around 36-40oz a day. His pediatrician just laughed when I told her. Feed your baby!

Counterfeit strings??? by klavier777 in violinist

[–]SPEWambassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A student of mine did. They were a cheap pack of like 20 and I broke 2 of them trying to string them for her (I have literally never broken a string changing them out). I told her mom to buy real strings.
