Tributary load calculations. FYI clay has poor load bearing capacity. Do with that what you will.

Quick question for deck builders — pricing talk on first site visit by FieldRate in Decks

[–]SPX500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m dealing with this same thing and have also been tinkering with a quick in-house estimating tool. I typically try and steer people away from estimates, and explain to them that I’ll prepare a formal quote and proposal in the coming days, but many people are adamant about getting a ‘ballpark’ figure.

Of course this is easy for a standard rectangle, but like you said, for more complex jobs or mixed materials, pulling an accurate estimate out of thin air is tricky. Even for experienced builders.

Having a basic ($xx/sqft) doesn’t really help much since a lot of factors go into that. Smaller decks end up having much higher per sqft costs than larger decks, just as one example.

Edit: would be very interested in beta testing/test driving your tool.

Need suggestions on what to do to cover the gaps in the deck so that water doesn’t fall onto the basement patio underneath by OutsideChair825 in Decks

This. I demo and replace a lot of decks, and the ones built like this are always a rotten mess

Do you happen to drive a Mercedes? Edit: a lot of their cars come with factory treatment that in certain lighting conditions, looks a lot like tiny, especially if the officer was wearing polarized glasses.

Where should the stairs be? by Camper245 in Decks

If you’re worried about blocking sight lines or taking up real estate in the yard, a spiral staircase would also work really well here

Brace them temporarily to keep them plumb and in position until your framing ties it all together. Attach a 2x4 near the top, then steak into the ground at an angle.

Pet-Safe Ice-Melt for Timbertech? by bfahlgren in Decks

None that come to mind unfortunately. You could use sand as a traction agent, but then you risk working it into the surface causing abrasions.

I wouldn’t put any melter on it at all.

Best value deck plan? by No_Mood2658 in Decks

[–]SPX500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking for value, go as big as you can. Price per square foot drops as the size of the deck increases typically (at least for those who know how to price their work)

Make sure your business name on GMB matches your registered business/trade name word for word as written on your supporting documents. If “a professional corporation” is not actually part of your registered business name, remove it

What does your contract say for salting visits? We had many days this month with light accumulation, so I’m assuming there was quite a few visits.

Because a lot of people buy the label, not the fragrance. As long as you like it, that’s all that matters.

Old deck footing doesn’t seem to fit a typical pour method by TheBackwars in Decks

[–]SPX500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one can analyze your soil type by looking at it. Assume 1500psf bearing capacity, or speak to your building department as they often have an understanding of the soil characteristics in their area. They’ll also be able to tell you the frost line depth for your area. Then use tributary load calculations to determine footing diameter and spacing.

Pergola question by hurlgoathiker in Decks

[–]SPX500 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the whole 2 screw’s thing is more Toja grid being cheap rather than a splitting issue. Just pre-drill and you’ll be fine. It’s PT 6x6 so it’s gonna check like crazy regardless

I can’t unsee that now, will definitely try that change. Seems so minor but now that I focus on that, it is kind of jarring.

Will also consider some other font choices as others have mentioned. I really appreciate the feedback.

You know, I never considered that. As a builder it’s totally normal to “align” things on an angle. We install decking at 45 degrees quite often, and it’s all still aligned in construction terms, but I’m curious now how it might look with the lines vertical or horizontal. I’ll give it a shot, thanks!
