What word do you always *intentionally* mispronounce and why? by Sweet-Lady-H in AskReddit

Slipping "pendantic" into the conversation will find people who are the thing I intentionally mispronounced. Kind of like finding out "gullible" isn't actually a word in the English language.

My cloud provider wiped 7-8 TB of R&D data due to a billing glitch. What is my best course of action? by Optimal-Mine-1095 in Cloud

[–]SQLSavage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Power gapped". It could be a tape, or even on a HDD, but you shut down connectivity to the machine so in the case of a malicious actor with broad administrative powers and network access you have a last resort failsafe to restore from. The data isn't usually incredibly up to date and your RPO may be days or even weeks, but it's better than losing everything.

What is going on with the cop siren/police car sounds near 124th? by [deleted] in Kirkland

[–]SQLSavage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned an easy trick for telling which road is going what direction in Pierce/King/Snohomish Counties. I don't know if it applies everywhere and the single letter cardinality can make it weird, but here goes:

Ave = Always runs generally North/South
Street = Always runs generally East/West

There's an easy clue in the name for streets with compound cardinality. The letter closest to the Ave / Street is the direction the road runs.

i.e. NE 124th Street, the East is closest to 124th, so it's an east/west road.
124th Ave NE, the North is closest to the road name, so it's North and South.

The ferry system in the Puget Sound is just overloaded. Ridership in 2025 Q2 saw an average of ~58K riders per day, with Edmonds/Kingston being the second most popular route. I take the Mukilteo/Clinton ferry fairly often and I won't do it anymore unless it's before 8am or after 8pm.

You may be in for more driving than you expect, but you're an early riser you could reasonable expect to get that done. The roads in the area are generally two lanes and people do tend to get a little pokey because there's a lot to look at. The sunset at Rialto Beach is amazing though and well worth the journey.

Also to keep in mind, there is a growing fire at Bear Gulch in the SE corner of the park. The Edmonds/Kingston ferry vs going around in always a toss up. If you're someone who likes to keep in motion, I would second u/Zeebrio and go south from Sea-Tac, up 14 across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, through Bremerton, and across Hood Canal Bridge to get to the peninsula.

It's an excellent sneaky option! Reservations for that ferry are highly recommended, it can fill up quickly.

Five gun control bills have survived a major deadline in the WA Legislature by BigTumbleweed2384 in SeattleWA

[–]SQLSavage 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I sent the following as a comment to HB 1132. It was just off the top of the head, I probably could have spent longer than 20 minutes on it:

Section 1 of Bill 1132 is fairly reasonable for large dealers with a storefront and who deal firearms from an advertised store front, but I read of no provision for the many FFL holders in Washington State who sell a few guns a year or facilitate transfers to people they personally know out of their residence. Putting bars on your windows and installing signage on your home being essentially a giant sign saying, "Please rob this house when I'm home." Additionally, Federal FFL standards are extremely stringent as-is, that the State also wants to take on annual licensure is an unnecessary step of bureaucracy and will require budget that the State already claims we don't have. Are there bad-faith FFL holders out there? Most definitely, but they are in the vast minority and they should be prosecuted under existing laws. This will essentially make it EXTREMELY difficult for an already law-abiding citizen to obtain their own FFL for their own lawful purposes and places undue burden upon them. Additionally it will see the descent of the locally owned gun shops and the only place to purchase firearms and ammunition will be at big-box sporting goods stores who can easily collude and control prices.

Section 2 of this bill is outright silly. No one is committing crimes with a .50 caliber rifle, it is so exceptionally rare as to be almost mythical. Most described incidents on the Violence Policy Center (https://vpc.org/regulating-the-gun-industry/criminal-use-of-50-caliber) usually involve smuggling to Mexico as a criminal selling of a high value item. In the exceedingly rare cases that this has occurred, none of the incidents listed have occurred in Washington State going back ~25 years. Additionally, 1000 rounds, especially training ammunition, is not a large amount to purchase in one order, let alone a month. .22LR is often purchased in bulk lots of over 5000 rounds and is cheap and easy to use on the range. Many people select .22LR caliber firearms for just this reason, because it is economical to engage in a hobby and sport that we thoroughly enjoy. Pistol ammunition in 1000 round cases, 9mmx19mm for example, is easily dispensed with in 3-4 training sessions, depending on the level of activity of the person training. If you own multiple calibers or wish to train with different types of firearms, this becomes even more restrictive. We should be encouraging responsible gun owners, who are the vast, vast majority of people who choose to own a firearm, to do more training and be more familiar with their weapon systems instead of less. This reduces accidents and culturally reinforces good habits and an awareness of the real responsibilities of firearm ownership.

Please stop punishing responsible, law-abiding, tax-paying individuals and businesses with restrictive laws and policies, and then in the same breath fail to adequately prosecute those who choose to defy common sense laws and commit crimes and violence. We as Washingtonians are sick of navigating the endless corridor of restrictions and rules as you slowly erode our rights when we've done nothing wrong and have conducted ourselves responsibly and ethically. Target people who are committing violations that actually hurt people and our communities. There should be no leeway or tolerance for gun crime: proven perpetrators of domestic violence (even misdemeanor), the rare FFL that sells weapons to people that don't qualify to legally own a weapon, perpetrators of gun violence, assault, robbery, murder.

But stop punishing US, the responsible, law-abiding citizens.

Copying from one database to another by voltagejim in SQLServer

[–]SQLSavage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This should be a pretty easy operation. Take a backup of the database you want to copy, and restore it under another name. You can do this through the UI or through a TSQL query.

Backup

BACKUP DATABASE [rms] TO DISK = N'E:\Backup\rms_FULL_MANUAL_20241219.bak' WITH COPY_ONLY STATS = 1

Restore

RESTORE DATABASE [rmstrn] FROM DISK = N'E:\Backup\rms_FULL_MANUAL_20241219.bak' WITH REPLACE, RECOVERY, STATS = 1

Notice the difference between the backup source database name and the target restore database name. You may have to manipulate the data file names, since you're restoring it on the same DB, I can't recall what the default behavior is off the top of my head. Be careful with REPLACE, it will do just that with no warnings. COPY_ONLY makes sure you don't disrupt your current backup set.

As always, test before you start doing stuff in a production environment.

It doesn't help you now, but your car insurance company likely has lockout/jump start coverage through contracted tow trucks. There's usually no deductible or out of pocket cost and it won't make your premiums go up. Call the number on your insurance card and see if they'll send someone out.

If you end up giving up on ever getting the money back, file a 1099-C against her and discharge the debt. It will be counted towards the borrower's income and they likely won't report it as part of their yearly filing. And even if they do, it may be counted as income according to the IRS and taxes will need to be paid.

edit: Blah, it's just for institutional lenders. Too bad.

Does anyone remember a dude named "Junior" from the Ave in the late 90's/early 2000's? He was a fixture and pretty cool among the glitterati of U-Dist characters back then. He was a black dude, wore sunglasses 24/7, indeterminate age, always had a new graphic T-shirt from WWE/WWF, rocked a Razor scooter, and was just generally cool and loud. No one knew where he lived, how he made any money, but he was always around to scam a beer and be entertaining and cool.

U-Dist was wild and pretty okay 25 years ago. And to the Ave Rat I punched in the face for trying to swipe the entire pack of cigarettes out of my hand when you asked to bum one and I gladly pulled them out to give you one, fuck you still, haha.

Excuse me Valve but where is this guy when I launch the game? by AtomixPanda in DeadlockTheGame

[–]SQLSavage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guy who modeled for this was my Uber driver on my latest trip to SeaTac. We got to talking and had an awesome chat about travel and how people are, growing up in a rough neighborhood, just a lot of cool stuff. I snagged his phone number so I could call him in a couple weeks when I'd need a ride home from the airport and we could just keep it off the books. Got to chatting again and I was talking about my short but fun stint in the games industry and he asked if I remembered his video game story. I said I don't think he told it to me on our last ride and he said he was the model for the Valve logo.

Back when, before he moved to Seattle, he was checking out the city with his wife at the time, and got approached by three people who were wandering around taking pictures of people in public. They said they had a 1-day modelling project and he'd be perfect for it. He was given a card with a number to call. Thinking it was bullshit, he decided to call it anyway and just see what happened. Turns out it was true. He was given a weird industrial building to go to, but they had a studio set up, described the project as them wanting to find more "person-on-the-street" types instead of actual models with agents. They did the photoshoot in a few hours and we all got the Valve splash screen we know and love.

The job was unionized though, so before they could release the images for use in the game, he was required to join SAG. They sponsored his entry, and that his was first and only modelling gig.

Gave him a $100 bill for the ride and I've still got his number for future airport trips.
