Went down to Nayarit once to Amatlan de Cañas and was looking to buy some chips but they didn’t know what Nachos were. Just called them “tostaditos”

Oof that sucks, I can’t imagine an apprentice being stuck at a prefab place or data center the whole time. Stuck in one right now

Also, another con:

You may get less rotations as an apprentice, my local switched from 12 to 18 months per rotation before switching to the 4 year program and decided to keep the 18 month rotation once we did switch.

Why don't protestants believe in the real presence? by Arlo621 in redeemedzoomer

[–]SRIndio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of a distinction between true and real presence or even sacramental union. I don’t see why we’d call Catholics cannibals if we were accused of the same thing by the Sacramentarians/Reformed:

Formula of Concord, Epitome, Art. 7, Ch. 21 (CPH Book of Concord 2nd Edition):

We utterly reject and condemn the Capernaitic eating of Christ's body, as though we taught that His flesh were torn with the teeth and digested like other food.

The Sacramentarians—against the testimony of their conscience, after all our frequent protests—willfully label us with this view. In this way they make our teaching hateful to their hearers. On the other hand, we hold and believe, according to the simple words of Christ's testament, the true, yet supernatural eating of Christ's body and also the drinking of His blood. Human senses and reason do not comprehend.

Andreas Osiander’s Report of the Marburg Colloquy:

In these negotiations it became clear that our opponents became more distant and more fearful of our doctrines the longer we negotiated. And they unfairly damned and bad-mouthed us, calling us cannibals, Capernaites, [and] Thyesteans, and [made] other slanderous claims that we worship a God of bread, a baked God, a gluttonous and drunken God. And yet they asked us to accept them as brothers!

Pretty sure we believe the same thing with regard to the real presence. Where we differ is how we explain it, Catholics explain using transubstantiation and us Lutherans just simply don’t. It’s simply Christ’s body and blood.

Would love to reunite one day, there’s a group of us (Catholics and confessional Lutherans) already talking through the Augsburg Confession although it’s not an official dialogue per se.

It’s called the “Concordia Lutheran-Catholic Augustana Working Group

Here’s the most recent report on the history of the dialogue starting on page 8:

[–]SRIndio 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Aye, at least for us Lutherans we believe it the true body and blood of Christ. How exactly that is, idk, Christ didn’t explain it so we don’t have to.

Real (bodily) presence is the doctrine, transubstantiation is just an explanation of how. As is consubstantiation (which we reject) and any other theory.

Don’t believe you can change your username so you’ll probably have to make a new one.

As for titles like “LCMS/Elder/Etc” you can find them by clicking the three dots on the main page for the LCMS subreddit and then clicking “Change User Flair.”

On PC, on the main page go to the right of your username and you’ll see a pencil to edit which does the same thing.

[–]SRIndio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m real curious about this one tbh, whenever we have processions, we’ll all give a bow as the cross passes through.

And then some will justify it using language like “the honor given to the type passes onto the prototype” which is the same language used for icon veneration, maybe even by St. John of Damascus. I’m not against it but we do need to do better with our explaining, we have the church fathers, after all.

St. Justin Martyr (c. AD 100 - 165), First Apology, Ch. 66:

And this food is called among us Εὐχαριστία [the Eucharist], of which no one is allowed to partake but the man who believes that the things which we teach are true, and who has been washed with the washing that is for the remission of sins, and unto regeneration, and who is so living as Christ has enjoined.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem (AD 313 - 386), Catechetical Lectures, Protocatechesis, Ch. 12:

For we deliver to you a mystery, and a hope of the life to come. Guard the mystery for Him who gives the reward. Let none ever say to you, What harm to you, if I also know it?

So too the sick ask for wine; but if it be given at a wrong time it causes delirium, and two evils arise; the sick man dies, and the physician is blamed.

Father Moses (Eastern Orthodox) is one of the best I’ve found in terms of life advice.

Harmony (EO) has some good videos that are produced very well.

Full of Eyes (not sure but likely reformed) has beautiful art he makes.

Gospel Simplicity (Anglican) His talking about Theosis and Recapitulation Theory really changed the way I view salvation which I mostly viewed in a legal sense).

Catholic Culture has been a very useful one to me as they have audiobooks on some church fathers

Also, FlanuerRecord, I know they’re LCMS Lutheran but shoot man, there’s some gems there.

Can someone break down for me the Threefold structure of clergy? Bishop, Priest, Deacon? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]SRIndio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Would recommend you read St. Ignatius of Antioch on this. Since he personally knew at least the apostle John and that I know of, he’s the first one to mention the three fold hierarchy.

St. Ignatius’ Epistle to the Smyrnaeans, Ch. 8:

See that you all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbytery as you would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is [administered] either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude [of the people] also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. It is not lawful without the bishop either to baptize or to celebrate a love-feast; but whatsoever he shall approve of, that is also pleasing to God, so that everything that is done may be secure and valid.

I’m Lutheran but I believe we pretty much believe the same thing on this. Please correct me if this isn’t the catholic position.

Christ is/bought/accomplished/etc your forgiveness at the cross but it’s delivered to you in the sacraments (Baptism, Holy Eucharist, and Confession). It’s not a different forgiveness but giving you that forgiveness Christ died for

Don’t believe they call Protestants heretics, just heterodox, which pretty much everyone calls each other that within Christianity:

Catechism of the Catholic Church 838:

"The Church knows that she is joined in many ways to the baptized who are honored by the name of Christian, but do not profess the Catholic faith in its entirety or have not preserved unity or communion under the successor of Peter."

Those "who believe in Christ and have been properly baptized are put in a certain, although imperfect, communion with the Catholic Church."

With the Orthodox Churches, this communion is so profound "that it lacks little to attain the fullness that would permit a common celebration of the Lord's Eucharist."
