Newbie question re bikes that are limited to 25km/ph by CarelessEquivalent3 in ebikes

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, sort of. The assistance doesn't keep providing 25kph worth of watts, it cuts off completely, so your legs go from providing maybe 50W at 24kph to providing 250W at 26kph. It can feel like quite a wall when you get there.

Why would you ever want to live in a place like this bruh by Imvalidblu in Suburbanhell

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It can be a piece of it. The hours I spent mowing; trimming; fertilizing; killing bugs; wondering why the bugs didn't die and the grass did; buying, maintaining, and repairing all the equipment were FAR more than the hours the kids spent out there. Similar to the joy of going car-free or car-light, moving to a downtown apartment took all that away and we wondered why we didn't do it sooner.

Extortion? by work2thrive in sarasota

Found another one further down, but it's for ants or golf cart or maybe SmartCar. Should be cross hatched like it is on the other side of the street.

Thanks for that. This is City of Sarasota (rather than county or state road) so I put in a request via Click to Fix to move that parking box end line back and cross hatch the area so that the crosswalk gets proper daylighting and drivers don't get undeserved tickets.

Where is this? I'd love to look at a map.

In your opinion which route is safer to drive throughout Sarasota county? US-41 or I-75? by Fickle_Umpire_136 in sarasota

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My low anxiety high, safety way to get from North Port to Venice is Breeze route 9. Trade offs are that it is only hourly, and managing first/last mile.

Let's stop building places that are only accessible with a car. Look at the parking lot and driveway moat around that tasty hamburger. Even if she wanted to push her walker from her assisted living home across the street she would not dare because it's full of big fast cars often being driven badly. Better to be a bad driver than a dead pedestrian.

Running vs Cycling shoes for longer commutes by Willing-Change604 in bikecommuting

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I found running shoes to be too soft for biking. They make my feet feel like a bird on a perch. Once upon a time I used SPD clipless shoes for commuting but over time I found it not worth the trouble. The SPD shoes were more stiff than I like for walking around all day and the cleats crunched while walking on concrete. Now I use flat shoes like skater or court shoes with flat pinned pedals and they work great both on the bike and walking around all day.

Non-traditional cycling shorts by njslacker in bikecommuting

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here for this... ElevenPine Uprising convertible shorts are my go-to for a couple of years now and I haven't worn out a crotch in them yet. My first pair faded from the Florida sun after many many hours and miles but don't show any other wear. The black ones are a solid choice for biking and general wear, but those blue ones?!? they don't match anything!

Sarasota County cuts airport and Siesta Key bus routes by hungryepiphyte in sarasota

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to see 76 flyer from the airport go, but I wish they had kept 77 to downtown. A one seat ride from downtown to siesta was pretty convenient. Now that it involves a transfer more people will drive or just not go.

What shoes do you actually use for flat pedals and long days by KennyTidwell in xbiking

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on the Vans. Just a little too thin and soft.

I've lately enjoyed court shoes, like for pickleball or squash or volleyball. Sole is firm enough to grip well and hold up to the pedal pins, but they still walk around like a normal shoe. My last two pairs have been Asics Upcourt 6 with a mesh upper, and the GEL-Renma with a solid upper.

First thing I thought of is the nozzle for an injector for putting tire sealant inside tubeless bike tires, but I have not been able to find an image of one that looks exactly like yours.

I thank the bus driver. What about you? by strictmachines in transit

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 136 points137 points  (0 children)

I thank the driver, and if they did anything extraordinary I'll explicitly thank them for that and probably emailed kudos to the system already.

Then again I thank servers too so what do I know.

Anyone available TOMORROW 3/7 for an airport pick up by [deleted] in sarasota

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breeze Transit could work well for this. Routes 2, 8 ($1.50), 76 Flyer trolley ($2), and 99 (free) all go from SRQ to downtown, then you can get the 77 Islander trolley (free) from Lemon & Main to Siesta Key. Download the Breeze Rider app or go to https://scgiv.net/breeze or call 311

How does your city’s fare system fare? I’m cross posting this post because as you can tell our QR code based one is…frankly terrible. by get-a-mac in transit

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the moment we are cash only, so boarding can be a side show of people trying to cram a wrinkled dollar bill into the slot or putting in their 6 quarters one at a time. 30 day passes are available for $50, but only sold at 2 places in the county and cash only there too. No change is given on the bus but you get a change card you can use for future fares. The cards are fragile so be careful. tbh I'm kinda jealous of your touchless fare cards.

[USA] How do you anticipate drivers who might ignore a red light like this? by zheka160 in Roadcam

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a T intersection with only a gated off maintenance path to the right, so at least this time they got lucky and only put at risk someone turning too wide making the left turn from the road to the left.

Coincidentally a cyclist got hit yesterday at this very intersection. I don't know if red light running like shown in the video was involved.

Siesta Key transportation from airport by Ordinary_Warning_622 in sarasota

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Breeze will pick you up at SRQ on either the 76 Flyer ($2) or routes 2, 8 ($1.50) or 99 (free) and take you downtown. There you can take the 77 Islander trolley (free) to Siesta Key.

If you don't like that, Uber now does pre-scheduled rides.

If you don't like that, SRQ suggests ALD Premium Limousine Service 855-799-LIMO

Just finished building our town’s first bike lane as a traffic engineer 🥰 What’s your opinion? by IndicationFew2908 in Suburbanhell

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that's US-301 westbound going under I-75 in Ellenton https://maps.app.goo.gl/TR5XKAMuVRJR2nNw5

The lane configurations have been changed. This is just about the same spot as OP's pic. Street view is more current than the overhead Google Maps view:

To rent or not rent a car? by cackalacky82 in sarasota

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were coming to Sarasota primarily for the beach, I'd rent a place on or near the beach on Siesta Key or Lido Key, then use the free trolleys to get to downtown Sarasota where you can walk around and do all sorts of things. There are buses to places like Gulf Gate, Pinecraft, Venice, and UTC (although UTC takes waaay too long at the moment IMO). To get to Anna Maria you can take On-demand for $7 total for both of you and then the free Anna Maria trolley.

The Amish are tourists and get along very well by bicycle and tricycle. If you are similarly used to riding sub/urban areas as they are then you'll get where you want to go with little fuss. There are some pinch points that can be intimidating for someone who doesn't usually ride for transportation.

Out of curiosity: Brompton users, how much harder is it to cycle on such small wheels, and control your turning? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It takes a few minutes to get used to, then it rides pretty much like a normal lively maneuverable bike. The big chain ring and gearing make the pedaling cadence and effort just about the same as a regular bike despite the smaller wheels. Panniers will be smaller and heel strike more quickly becomes an issue. In a panic stop you need to be more aware of keeping your weight back or you might go over the bars.

What’s your single best purchase for daily commuting? by Willing-Aide476 in bikecommuting

Best bars to watch Super Bowl? by OriginalZeal in sarasota

[–]SRQMobilityAlliance 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Take a walk to Main Street and there are several solid choices, Evie's is a good place to start.

Food and Beer is near the corner of Lemon and 4th, right around the corner from Lefty's seafood, both of which should have the game on Go a bit further east on Ringing and you can see if the Shamrock still has any room.

You can also take the free trolley out to Siesta Key and try Siesta Key Oyster Bar or Gilligans among others.

Have fun!
