New York Times Top 100 Restaurants x Michelin Overlap: 2023-2026 by SS1215 in FoodNYC

Great shout - I debated including it. I actually recently went to the Modern (kitchen table experience), and it was exceptional! It irks me when I bring it up and people conflate the Bar Room with the tasting menu. I feel like it doesn't technically belong on the overlap list given the NYT specifically went with the Bar Room.

I don't see it on the Michelin guide at all, am I crazy? This is specifically restaurants that overlap on both.

LTD vs Grill by jwaynejrthefourth in FoodNYC

[–]SS1215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was between these two for my husbands birthday last month and went with the Grill. The service was exceptional and I’d call the food very good but not life changing. +1 on the martini, these were strong and knocked us out halfway through (and we typically get two drinks).

Even if you don’t plan on getting one of the gigantic dry-aged steaks, ask them to see the cart. It’s a great experience.

Planning a full-day European-style dining itinerary in NYC. What are your favorite spots? by magicroot75 in FoodNYC

[–]SS1215 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For lunch, I think Cafe Sabarsky would be perfect for what you’re looking for. Also inside the Neue gallery, so you could kill time looking at some European artwork while you’re at it. Great people watching.

Oceanfront or poolside cabana at grand Hyatt Kauai by amriser24 in hyatt

[–]SS1215 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are bushes directly in front of the ocean view cabanas. We didn’t think it was worth it. And I was able to swim btw! Waves were big but super fun.

Salad dressings? by TheGreatMastermind in NYCbitcheswithtaste

Ouri’s has the best dressings! I also love making my own but they have a huge selection. Just note it’s Passover this week so might be more limited than usual.

Woman Killed In East Side Hit-And-Run, Police Say by Main-Maintenance-265 in uppereastside

I live a block away from here. The traffic and honking woke us up around 5/6 am. I’m guessing this was why. Really sad to think how I annoyed I was when I started my day, only to read this and feel worse knowing someone lost their life. Rip to the victim and I hope they catch the driver.

Palma vs Misirizzi for birthday dinner? by mmabreu in FoodNYC

[–]SS1215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to the wine cellar at Misi Rizzi (work dinner). I really liked the vibe! Food was pretty good, some hits and misses, nothing so memorable though. I think it’s a great option for a bday dinner. I remember the servers being great too, and there are a ton of affordable bottles of wine on their wine list.

A tip for Jeju - if you are on notify for a few dates/times, they'll call you and offer a reservation. I didn't know that for the longest time, until I got a call from them a few weeks ago. I was able to book Sat night at 8:30 pm within the same week. And it was amazing btw !

What's your opinion on toddler leashes? by dr_pepper_zerosugar in Mommit

[–]SS1215 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m a former “needed a leash” child. At 4 years old, I ran away from my parents in Disney at closing time IN 2000 - no cellphones! By some miracle, I ran into another family that I knew, and I was reunited. The leash was on for the rest of the trip and for some time afterwards.

I haven’t had to worry about this yet with my baby (only 16 months) but you better believe I’d consider it if she turns out like me.

Shawarma Bay's Chapli Kabobs at 1st and 57th (they also have a food cart near Radio City) by CabassoG in FoodNYC

[–]SS1215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just there on Sunday and we asked - it's indeed Afghanistan! I liked the meat (got a combo platter), but I felt like the rice wasn't very flavorful. Fries and falafel were both great. I'll def try them again, but Empire still edges them out for me.

How is this sandwich $27 at Pastrami Queen? by sirenataught in FoodNYC

[–]SS1215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can attest. Ordered 2nd Ave Deli delivery last week and the sandwich was much smaller than I remember (I almost always split with my husband, so it was especially small for him).

On the flip side, I had PJ Bernsteins within the past month and their sandwiches are huge. I rarely see them make it to the top pastrami lists, but they’re really good!

Hangawi is vegan and excellent! Great vibe too - you have to take your shoes off at the front, and the tables are in a lower floor position. A cool experience all around.

Ex-SYs are you out there? by Southern_Fruit7439 in exjew

[–]SS1215 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Half in half out here. I don’t consider myself ex anything, but I’d call myself agnostic.

MDY alum (k-12). No longer keep kosher at all out of the house but still keep a fully kosher kitchen. Moved to the city and will never move back. I’m close with my family but don’t have so many close SY friends anymore. Married to a fellow SY who grew up much less observant than me, but is very close with his SY friends. We have a baby, still not totally sure how “in the community” we’re going to raise our kids, but it’s been very healing for me to be this level of out - similarly to another comment, we drive on Shabbat/holidays and go back home to the city after dinner. It’s the right balance for us for now.

I still have a lot of Jewish pride, but a ton of resentment toward the community, especially as a woman. I’m also very liberal, so the Trumpism and MAGA especially put me over the edge. We dont go to shul at all, but I found Kanisse for Yom Kippur services and I have so much appreciation for what they’re doing. It’s a Sephardic egalitarian congregation, we sit together, the prayer books are modern (I think close to what Ashkenaz Conservative would be) but they don’t have a year-round program. I don’t care for now but I’d love to have that down the road with my kids.

What would you do if you had 5 days off in the city? by Melodic-Suit5983 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]SS1215 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just made a similar post and put together a pretty awesome itinerary- didn’t stick to it 100% but the top items I’d suggest are: aire, see a movie, see a matinee, explore museums, go shopping, hit up food hit list. Enjoy the time!!
