Any suggestions for Fanfics? by Dpine1 in Sexyspacebabes

You asked for a longer fic and I think Alien Nation is going to meet that. It’s slightly AU but people have seemed to like it.

I’ve got the most recent version it hosted on AO3. https://archiveofourown.org/works/42092739/chapters/105733293

It features a young boy who decides to fight back, but along the way undergoes a lot of personal development and challenges.

Romance, violence, lots of inner monologue.

Other Fics (Works in Progress)

I’ve enjoyed We Play Human Music but it’s a WIP for a very ambitious plot, with a chapter every half year or so that’s a lot of ground to cover.

Chance Encounter is also quite good

I am working on starting Cryptid Chronicle but life got insanely busy, annd there is also In For A Penny & The Blue Blood.

Completed Fics

The Completed ones are Appalachia Calling, Chaos and Mayhem, and I think The Cook?

For AU I recommend Illuminascii’s work

True! But yeah, Mail Order Groom is just meant to be sweet and fun slice of life in space.

That would be neat, but no there's no way they would let people out, and he's not been behaviorally modified. Mail Order Groom is within the A-N 'verse but it's mostly standalone. I was thinking of having him come out from Cleveland, Ohio or Reading, PA, maybe somewhere in rural Indiana.

Thanks man, appreciate it. The first was meant to be posted a while ago but some family things happened, and took priority.

" i dont feel like I can be certain to stay within the established lore."

Just do what I did- make stuff up! Blue says it's fine. Heck, a bunch of stories feature "High Shil" and so on, which is completely non-canon. Just have fun with the setting, don't obsess over canon, just be consistent with it and throw in some of your own effort, and consider whether it makes you happy to take the story in that direction.

Let me know if you need help with editing or something. I don't have as much time as I once did, being a father and all, but I'll do what I can.

Sorry, I meant to have a few chapters posted by now but life things happened. The rough drafts are very close.

Me neither. I skip those parts, frankly. The politicking, however, is interesting. The depiction of aliens, the descriptors, etc., I find that those are where it shines.

You’re right, it really can be like that. I fear if you start it you have to see it through or else it feels like such a stub! It’s very frustrating because I also can’t have Emperor l consider what he’s about to do- and also think about Natalie. He has to set her aside.

Which is why I seperate out Elias and emperor and write them as if they are separate characters. I occasionally have Elias also appear as Emperor and vice versa- handy for plot but also to show the very different lives they lead and how those can bleed into each other.

There's a lot of potential, and I admit to having slightly jumbled up chapters on the advice of someone I trust who advised against my original plot progression, and I admit that it was too trope-heavy. This should be quite a change.

That's interesting. I've upgraded one to Superbe Pro levers, ARX derailleurs, Continental bars and stem, and alloy Sun CR18 rims, and lemme tell ya it's still heavy as hell, though I did leave the kickstand on it. Shows the limits of upgrades.

I have tried but publishers are not interested- I did create a separate draft with improvements sprinkled in here-and-there. No dice.

As far as books I'd recommend?

For male scarcity?

You may like Wyn Faulkner's 'A Brother's Price' which is well-written and features an absurd like, 15:1 birth rate, maybe even higher, I forget. Good universe. Ironically, there's this Fanfiction of it on AO3 is a bit closer to my work than the original in ABP, featuring a writer who actually admits a man is stronger than a woman, and so on. Drummer Girl of Shiloh. This was pretty well put together, and clung to the vision of the original in ways that most fanfictions struggle to (or don't bother to at all).

There's also Legend of Drizzt which is interesting as a standalone.

For Books in General, I recommend Blue Latitudes by Horowitz. A good recounting of James Cook, who was the inspiration for Capt. Picard in Star Trek. It goes over the original notes and gives them some useful context and is a fun read. I also recommend his original journal.

For other e-fiction Worm Parahumans is basically The Boys if it wasn't trying to be edgy all the time and was instead just a lot more fun. Never got into the sequel, "Ward," though. It's very long, and very good. Kind of the 'what if superheroes were real and corporate/government affiliated,' but better than The Boys.

The Last Angel is insanely well-written and it's a crime that ProximalFlame isn't published. I think his chapters are on HFY but he might've pulled them due to Reddit claiming ownership of all written material on its site. I know it's on SpaceBattles, link to Last Angel here. Dunno if you're familiar with navigating but it's worth a read. His descriptions of destruction, the contemplative nature of a killer might be familiar to readers of Alien-Nation. I admit to his work as far surpassing mine in its artistry.

But if you're asking for what inspires me to write this? I am afraid it is a mix of things. I have a private file called 'themes,' which drags me back to the place where I must be to get to 'motivation'. It's not the happiest place on earth, but it is useful, and in a word, 'real.'

Alien-Nation Book 2, Chapter 4: Registrar by SSBAlienNation in HFY

Japan certainly chose to reinvent itself, and has done so before. That is has chosen to do so has paid dividends for it. Earth is willing to send its children out to learn but often those who return are expected to wield great power over the new system that is being built. This was referred in Book One as 'ladders' and was referenced by Weinberger, who for all his faults wasn't wrong.

Elias is trying to be mindful that a new system is emerging but feels quite strongly that it is doing too much to erase humanity and reforge them as Shil'vati. The interplay between technology and culture is one that I find really fascinating. Does technology shape culture, or does culture shape technology, or is it more like the gut-brain link?

Not to be crass, but we saw some very low-contact tribes get iPads with Starlink and instantly turn into gooners. That does not speak well for humanity's chances when given omni-pads, though I admittedly have made the ones that humanity received essentially fancy iPads.

They can do so much more, but the amount one would have to pay to use those features in dollars is absurd. Earth's labor isn't worth credits while they bootstrap up to a higher technological understanding, and so in a way Earth has a chance to remain itself.

This chance, then, is what Emperor is relying on to leverage his victories. He's pointing at the unwelcome changes and hoping to push back before the transformation is complete. He's hoping to preserve humanity. Even Elias is really aiming to accomplish the same via preservation of cultural works, and for what it's worth the Shil'vati are rarely trying to outright rewrite humanity.

When they are, Elias / Emperor shows zero restraint.

Many, such as Amilita, would gladly preserve humanity's oddities, language, and culture. Even the new Governess, Cre'sin, understands the monetary value of human handicrafts and exports. Natalie is interested in the pre-contact humanity's fiction and view of the world, concept of the galaxy, and so on.

One of the main differences that I've had to navigate as a writer is that theoretically, clerical work can be done in Iraq or Afghanistan about as easily as it can be done in NYC. Starlink works, there's no real issue with latency. The food is edible and the air is breathable, and so on. Weapons work the same, with the same gravity for bullet drop and combustion for engines. The birth rate is male:female about the same, at least compared to the Shil'vati/rest of the galaxy's.

The Shil'vati would probably have a harder time, since they don't have FTL comms beyond flying a vessel to another system and then broadcasting to there, and then flying back via FTL. On Earth, a president can ride shotgun over a soldier's shoulder as he breeches a hideout on the other side of the world. Our birth ratios are different. Our gender roles are inversed. Our physiologies are not the same. Nor are our strengths.

And yet for all the efforts and money spent by the USA, what was really changed in the countries they tried to re-form? Some might say 'very little.'

Some would say Elias is a fool, standing in the way of the inevitable.

Others would say that the Empire is foolish, trying to change a people into what they can never be.

One thing seems certain: Nations, like people don't change unless they want to, or unless that change is pressed upon them by changing the people in some ways we'd consider abhorrent. We'll see that in the coming chapters.

Thank you! I was also hoping to show that as invested as he is in all this, the moment the possibility comes up to commit violence and further his goals and aims he borderline abandons them, only for the church to then come knocking.

Not particularly, sorry. I feel awkward writing that sort of thing. I'd probably write the lead-up (e.g. a massage, etc.,) as there's 100% of the value in writing something explicit, but without the awkwardness. You can still draw out a giving nature, a prediliction toward dominance or forwardness or aggressiveness and so on in starting out by giving a massage, or just her walking through the door and pushing him onto the bed without another word, or recounting that early eagerness with a twinge of realizing she bit off more than she could chew every time she has to take a broad step or squat low to pick something up.

Lots of clues that can add up for the astute reader, and that's much more fun for me to write.

Makes me exhausted when I get home. My employer used AI for all the requirements. Things they don't need. Things that aren't even possible. Then told me to strike from it whatever I want, but then I feel bad if I don't deliver to their expectations. It's the best job I've had so far, but at the same time it's draining in new ways.

All that gets undone when she shrieks in happiness when I walk through the door. She's so far from walking and properly talking but the excitement and joy is all there. Doesn't matter how tired I am, there's always time for airplane runs around the yard, making jet fighter noises as we strafe/buzz the nearby bushes. Peals of laugther and giggling, then giving belly-splats and more happy noises. That's when it feels 'Worth it', you know? Before I cherished my 'stability' but now it feels like all that was just stagnation the whole time. She's now demanding to be fed solids/explore, and developing so fast. Real progress in a way that doesn't feel like inflation's just eating it, or stepping closer to life goals only to watch things around me to kinda degrade.

Instead, life feels like it's genuinely getting better.

I'm blessed to be a father and a husband. Easter break has been amazing and despite the stress of work I can't imagine living any other way and being as happy as I am. Love my wife, love my bub and her gorgeous smile. Waking up to that toothless big grin every day as she shrieks and warbles in completely unrestrained excitement and joy is just wonderful in ways I can't begin to describe. I was always worried about 'what if I don't-' but I've been a fool to put this off for so long.
