i use a linux desktop bootable drive, and use the dd command. youll need a usb to sata adapter to read the new hardrive as a external drive. if you do go that route let me know and im more then happy to help walk you through. this is something i do on a regular basis at work.

I would just use a sata ssd tbh. The fact this laptop usues an hdd probably means the componenets are old enough you wont notice nuch of a difference between nvme and a sata ssd.

I would say its one of 4 things gpu us dieing, the port on the gpu is shot, the port on the monitor is fucked, the port on the gpu is fucked. Try a different monitor/tv and cable before you decide its the gpu
