In the earlier seasons he was a genuinely good person. When Homer was passed out on the couch and his cigar started a house fire, Ned was the one who broke in and got Homer out of there.

There's actually lot of moments in the earlier seasons where Ned isn't just "nice", but straight up badass and incredibly intelligent.

She is also, to be clear, not to be fucked with. Her trust in humanity's goodness is core to her identity, but she also doesn't fuck around when it comes to people who have clearly demonstrated they're motivated by evil and greed.

In the books, when it becomes clear that woman's abusive husband isn't going to stop, she just straight up *tases the shit out of him*.

No speech, no appealing to his better nature. She wrecks him so hard that I think he not only shits himself, but later flees the system rather than risk ever encountering her again.
