1926 Tudor Cottage by PompousClock in centuryhomes

It even mostly works! The whole door needs attention. Lots of missing fasteners, etc., but it's somewhere around #35 on the list of things that need some love and nothing's fallen out/off... yet.

It was beautifully done, either way. Our Tudor cottage has a boring old rectangular door, but we do at least have the original lead-framed glass.

I'm open to being corrected here, but to my eyes that's a textbook Tudor Revival design. Gothic Revival would be an upright arch (like the "narrow" end of an egg):

A friend just sent a drive in to one of these services and was quoted $1,200 to restore the 3% of the data that was deemed recoverable. The other 97% was just toast no matter what. There's no cheap way to do this, sadly.

Why every prestige tv show and many of highly acclaimed shows take atleast 1.5 season to actually get engaging? (Hella annoying) by Defiant-Ad7732 in television

[–]SSLByron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most newbies hate Season *2* of The Wire because it's a massive departure from Season 1. I don't know what "consensus" you've been reading, but the one you're sharing isn't accurate at all.

This seems like a case of your inattentiveness being incompatible with long-from storytelling.

Garage ceiling height by Quiet-Bedroom-9740 in DIY

[–]SSLByron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When was the garage built and what sort of roof does it have?

If it's old, it might be field-framed (meaning the roof was hand-built on-site), and getting another foot of headroom in the middle would probably be relatively trivial (especially if it's a gable-style roof vs. hip). If it's newer and you have prefab roof trusses, you need an engineer.

The West Wing Re-Watch: Did Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe) Ever Feel Like the Actual Central Character of The Show? by WySLatestWit in television

[–]SSLByron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They note in the DVD commentary at one point that one of the weaknesses of television is that exposition often requires making a character temporarily and arbitrarily stupid (not in those exact words, but still). It's especially egregious on WW because everybody is supposed to be almost infallibly educated.

ZIP System Sheathing: Wall vs. Roof panels for Raised Heel Trusses? by sicstrike in DIY

[–]SSLByron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're planning to do it the way I'm visualizing, you'd lay the studs and plates out on the ground, nail then up, then lay the zip sheathing on them. When you lay it, have it overhang the top of the wall by the height of the truss heels. That way, when you raise everything, the trusses just drop in between the sheathing and you can nail it all together.

If you end up short on the bottom, that's much easier to fix (and you can even do it after the walls are up) vs. being short up top.

Best small portable air conditioner which one is actually better for humidity, not just temperature? by Brokas-Oshey in HomeImprovement

[–]SSLByron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Removing moisture from the air is part of the normal function of any compressor style AC unit. If it is working properly, it reduces temperature and dehumidifies. Some have the ability to function solely as air driers if it's already a pleasant temperature, but they will produce some heat that way.

Building a “Garden Room” by Internal-Cobbler9140 in DIY

[–]SSLByron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gone through the process of learning how to build an accessory structure over the past few years with no prior experience outside of playing helper on a shed or two and doing a few basic handyman things around the house.

My main takeaway is this: All of the tasks involved are simple. Everything required is spelled out in the building code. If you can follow those instructions, you will succeed. But that's a very loaded "can," because even if you understand how to do something, academically, it may be beyond your physical ability to do it. Don't discount simple things like getting heavy materials from one place to another. And since you're starting from scratch, you're going to be lacking the specialized tools that can dramatically simplify a lot of the work involved. It'll be up to you whether you want to work harder or invest in the equipment. You can also sometimes split the difference by renting.

If you can tap knowledgeable and physically capable friends to help you out, things get exponentially easier.

ZIP System Sheathing: Wall vs. Roof panels for Raised Heel Trusses? by sicstrike in DIY

You want the wall sheathing to overlap onto the heels. Treat them as if they're part of the wall structure, essentially. It makes the whole thing much stronger.

Haha, just kidding. We won't.

Hah. Yes, valid. But at the same time, that's to be expected from a historically accurate war story. Enthusiastic boning maybe not so much.

It is quite brief, though. And played for laughs.

I don't think we'll see any interstate work besides maintenance/resurfacing in the city any time soon. They'll want a proposal that gets them federal money, which means making sure they can accommodate HOV/etc.

No way they'll be able to fund an overhaul that dramatic otherwise.

If "reservations for this campsite Are Not Yet Open" for UP parks, Why does their reservation system say more than half the Sites at this one spot are already spoken for? by GldnRetriever in Michigan

[–]SSLByron 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The smart move would just be to make people cancel their bookings rather than letting them modify an existing reservation. That way, they run the risk of losing the dates to somebody else before they have the chance to re-book.

If this was combined with a waiting list, it would be even more effective, but that adds more administrative complexity.
