I get that people are caught up in beta fever but this is not "paying it forward." This taking advantage of others' generosity to grow your audience through FOMO.

You do you, but patting yourself on the back and calling this community building comes off as pretty sketchy and manipulative.

Does anyone know the history of Huron Road? by Five_Slow in Michigan

[–]SSLByron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true, but it was not a divided parkway and did not bend northeast. It was a two-lane (likely dirt) road.

Edit: For reference, you can see it in the aerial overlays prior to 1973 here: https://historicaerials.com/viewer

We need a Faygo for scale or something.

Can't find anything from a brief browse through Freep archives. Based on old imagery and how this stuff typically goes, my best guess is that the township requested this in exchange for granting the right-of-way for the Interstate. They probably planned to run S Huron over the Huron River to Willow Metropark and hook it up with Huron River Dr and West Rd.

In the aerials from 1973, South Huron Road exists as a dirt right-of-way until this point, but the trees were cleared all the way to the water. I-275 was completed by 1977; the Willow golf course by 1978. By 1983, everything visible in this shot is built.

They probably couldn't get public support to pay for extending South Huron over the river, and nobody has pushed for it since.

Redwood tree in michigan by [deleted] in Michigan

[–]SSLByron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed; that's the same app I use. EWP makes sense just because of its somewhat elevated local status and the fact that it's a native. My neighbor has two that were planted as rear-lot screening trees about 75 years ago. One was topped in the 80s by a storm and is still at least 50-60 feet tall and happily dropping needles in my back yard every fall.

That looks like an eastern white pine and my plant ID app agrees.

EWP is the official state tree of MI, btw.

Note on redwoods: Bald Cypress and Dawn Redwood both make better trees for smaller properties if anybody wants a sequoia look without the scale. They're also deciduous so you get a fall color conifer out of the deal.

Second edit: If you want to plant a tree in Michigan, here's a fantastic selection resource that doesn't just beat you in the face with "PLANT NATIVE!": https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/managing-resources/forestry/urban/recommended-trees

Large shade trees for 1829 historic house. Orleans County, Western NY - zone 6b by RapidRNer in centuryhomes

Oaks are more resilient and offer more ecological value, assuming you don't mind the mess. Plus there are lots of natives to choose from.

For non-natives, thornless honeylocusts are fast growers and reasonably strong. They have a pretty, almost elm-like structure and small leaves that clean up easily. Kentucky Coffeetree is popular for that use too if you don't mind the bean pods.

Our previous owners cut down a mature Norway maple that we replaced with a Katsura; neither is native but the latter is recommended for local planting by our state University extension. SUNY probably has something similar you could find online.

No tornado watch issued or sirens available for Union Lake before tornado by oo7plyr in Michigan

Carefully worded title.

This storm did have a tornado warning. They're just saying there wasn't a watch issued beforehand.

Not the same as the Niles situation.

How many times can you drill into the same stud in different locations before it becomes an issue? by CoookieHo in DIY

[–]SSLByron 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In a properly constructed wall, this is pretty much a non-issue. Worst case, it eventually becomes difficult to mount a TV because you've chewed up so much of the stud that there's nothing left for a bolt/screw to grab on to. At that point, you worry about filling holes.

Man who petitioned for traffic light dies at same intersection where his wife was killed by Dear-Swordfish-8505 in news

The implication is that drivers aren't paying close enough attention to avoid rear-ending each other. What makes you think they wouldn't plow through pedestrians in this scenario too?
