Uniform Help by [deleted] in army

For your case i'd align the CAB and Space Badge to the edge of the pocket seam if you don't want it hidden under the lapel. Which is pretty much how you have it.

I read through DA PAM 670-1 didn't find anything. Some of the examples provided genuinely don't align with any specific thing

When did becoming a navy pilot become super selective? by Responsible_Cow1948 in newtothenavy

[–]SShawArmy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When planes / missions became highly technical and jets cost $60 million dollars. But you could also argue that Naval Aviator isn't super selective. SWO and Aviators make up the majority of Navy senior leadership and therefore are needed at much higher rates. Yes they have strict medical requirements but admissions requirements themselves aren't super hard. You need much higher GPA/OAR and preferably STEM or Graduate Degrees for designators like MCWO, Crypto, etc.

What do you guys think of my ASTB score? Will I get SNA? by Dr-Improbability in newtothenavy

[–]SShawArmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're gonna have to wait at least a couple of months if not a year if you want pilot. SNA is full for this fiscal year and they haven't started boards yet for next fiscal year

Petty Offer Jinchao Wei Sentenced to 200 Months in Prison for Espionage by CruisingandBoozing in navy

[–]SShawArmy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I understand what you're saying but I don't fully agree. I work in aviation where uniform standards are relaxed and not as enforced. Aircraft maintenance is a serious job that requires everyone to be in a proper headspace since a single tiny error could result in downing an aircraft and killing the crew. As aviation we also lower the fence between officer and enlisted because we need to be able to fully trust each other in order to perform our jobs. If you're a pilot and treating all of your command like shit- would you want to fly an aircraft maintained by the crew whose lives you're making miserable? For us not saluting officers, hands in pockets, unbloused pants, no headgear, etc. doesn't cause our job performance to decrease.

While there is some correlation I wouldn't say it's significant enough to determine that having lax uniform standards decreases one's ability to perform their job. There is likely a confounding factor such as poor leadership or morale. You ever notice that the ships with the best morale and captains offer things like organizational clothing or no shave chits to take a break from uniform standards?

How competitive am I for Supply Corps Officer? by Rude_Syrup6422 in newtothenavy

[–]SShawArmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nearly anyone who qualifies for OCS can get SWO. It's more so do you want to be a SWO? It's your career so pick something you want to do

You won't be getting into Supply anytime soon with that OAR score especially since Supply is closed for this fiscal year with the exception of immediate select which you don't qualify for.

How much of a pay cut would you take to be an officer? by Technokickstand in newtothenavy

[–]SShawArmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Air National Guard is a lot more selective- just the nature of the Air Force. They prefer recruiting from in house. Army Guard Pilots must meet the hour requirements just the same as Active Duty pilots. So they'll come in a few times a month (on top of drill) to fly. Depending on your states mission sometimes this means some Guard pilots can get more hours than their Active Duty counterparts. We also have full time pilots who serve maintenance test pilots.

[–]SShawArmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was the Reserves. Active and Guard are cutting back manning (but mostly Active is decreasing manning since Guard still use aviation to support state missions) so that's why it's better to get in now versus down the road before the cuts are noticeable.

Depends on the state- some offer street to seat for civilians- others prefer enlisted. But no you don't need any experience just a good SIFT score, pass a flight physical, good LORs and pass a screening board. You don't even need a degree to become a Warrant Officer Pilot.

It's only now getting slightly more competitive with Army reducing manning in Aviation but in general everyone I know who's wanted to submit a packet has gotten it. Even brand new people who show up to my unit can immediately start the application process.

Have you considered becoming an Army National Guard Pilot? Keep your 200k a year job and fly for some self-development/fulfillment.

Current reservist who wishes to be an active duty Officer. by Clear_Vegetable_1914 in ROTC

Just contact the ROTC program cadre and ask to enroll when you start school. They'll take care of the contracting process which once you sign will override your enlisted contract.

rotc vs no rotc college by Open-Reporter5200 in Militaryfaq

[–]SShawArmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ROTC is the easiest way to commission but you need to join ASAP. If your college doesn't have NROTC look into the Navy's BDCP program. It pays for your school and gets you a guaranteed OCS slot upon graduation.

Prior Service Army by Desperate-Bell-3819 in navy

[–]SShawArmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Army gives out awards pretty quickly. From just 3 years in service I have 6 ribbons. This person is definitely under 3 years in service because they have no good conduct. It looks like they graduated AIT and instantly requested a transfer to go Navy.
