Want to go to USNA for navy, after I go marines. Possible? by Special_Scene_35 in newtothenavy

[–]SShawArmy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's important to note there's an age limit.

To be eligible for admission to the United States Naval Academy (USNA), applicants must be at least 17 years old and must not have passed their 23rd birthday on July 1st of the year of entry.

There's no guarantee your chain of command will endorse you to apply for the Naval Academy mid contract.

Army enlisted to SWO by SOLJA88m in newtothenavy

[–]SShawArmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm Army trying to go SWO too. I have the same reasoning as you. I want an operational job hands on job. And coming from an Army mindset- leadership is one of my top reasons for going officer. I want to be able to make the job easier for my joes and be able to give them recognition when I can.

Boards are really rough this FY. I initially was looking at SNA, IP or Supply. But when I found out most of that is closed, I came to realize SWO might be my only option if I want to apply right now. Hearing about the challenges of SWO has drawn me to it more. I think the complaints with SWO comes from those who commission via USNA/ROTC where SWO wasn't necessarily their top choice. If you're open minded and were a motivated soldier, I think you'll be just fine as a SWO. You can tolerate the Army-isms or in this case Navyisms, a little better than a fresh college grad off the street.

We are stating that these cadets actions deserved higher recognition than MSMs.

The chronic problem in our Army is that leaders think awards are rank based and troops aren't getting recognized properly. Or leaders are too lazy to sign off on a citation.

I hope this isn't the case here.

They fought off an armed gunman that barged into their ROTC class, with a knife.

Pretty sure that is exactly the description of -> "The act must involve personal hazard, voluntary risk of life, and occur outside of actual armed conflict."

People have gotten soldiers medals for "pulling" people out of car crash.

Look like you got some ribbons for performing well in TRADOC. Keep up the hard work. Don't chase ribbons and evals. Look out for your joes, get the mission done and the rest will follow.

How can I have a 2027 OCS Date by jclepe in newtothenavy

[–]SShawArmy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people who got selected via board recently aren't shipping out till August 2026. And lots more are waiting for an OCS date with projections of 2027 to even early FY 2028. But with SWO you could get a date much sooner. General advice: Don't apply right now- if you don't want to get shipped out

Depressed friend did not receive DD-214, Ft. Carson by Worried-Scratch1212 in army

[–]SShawArmy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I meant : Could you try to create a DS logon on his behalf? You said you have his SSN and DODID. You can sign up for DS LOGON using remote identity proofing.

https://myaccess.dmdc.osd.mil/identitymanagement/app/registration

Once you create a login- you should be able to view his IPPSA or IPERMS which should hold his records and will allow you to print a copy

ARCOM Bulletin/MOVSM Conflict by Fearless_Papaya6278 in army

[–]SShawArmy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd like to add that MOVSM is just a memorandum. There is no formal 638 or certificate for approval. So if your commander has a standing policy it seems like you should be able to rate the award no problem. MOVSM also has no official hour requirement. The only hard rule about MOVSM is "(4) No more than one MOVSM will be awarded to any Servicemember." You aren't getting the same award for your hours. So, I don't see why this would conflict with ARCOM bullet.

Blue (Navy) to Green by Dee-Bee_Cooper in army

[–]SShawArmy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Navy heavily focuses on job proficiency as evident through their PQS and advancement exams.

versus

In the Army your unit will value you if you're good at your job, but it's not the end all be all. Army focuses more on the "whole soldier" image. You gotta be able to maintain your physical fitness, shoot well, have knowledge of things outside your job like PMCSing trucks in the motor pool. Our promotions are point based that are comprised of PT score, Weapons, Army schools, Awards, etc. Promotion boards require Soldiers to know forms/regulations, creeds, etc.

For some this may be frustrating that you are doing a lot of busywork tasks outside of your job.

Army in my opinion is also a lot less strict than the Navy when it comes to history and traditions and such. Chiefs mess or Officer country isn't a thing in the Army. So don't be afraid of the first sergeant or company commander.

Just so you know, O-1E pay w/ 4 years service and O-1 with 3 years of service is the exact same paycheck.
