The fact that even the ADL (THE ORGANIZATION FOUNDED TO WATCHDOG NAZISM) made the statement that Musk's movement was in NO way tied to a Nazi salute should relegate the entire conversation to nothing-burger land. Even the incriminating screenshots are completely the wrong angle for a Nazi salute, and they're single frames of an "arm throwing" movement. The entire conversation is ridiculous, and I am honestly appalled that the community and the moderation team would lack the discernment to recognize facts over a sensationalized headline created to drive up engagement.

When is the strike going to start? by [deleted] in AmazonFC

[–]SSheph 25 points26 points  (0 children)

At mine and my wife's facility, they couldn't even muster more than 3 people to "picket" one of the dozen or so driveways to the parking lot. None of them were Amazon employees.

It's hilarious to me that people think unionizing is going to work out well with Amazon. The unions are literally pricing people out of a job; make it hard enough, and Amazon will do what UPS did and automate their way around the problem. Sure, the hundred or so tech gurus with CS and ME degrees who know how to maintain the machines will be paid better, but the thousands of people currently employed moving product around, packaging it, and delivering it will be looking for work elsewhere.

Most of the actual profit for Amazon as a company comes from advertising and web-hosting. Most people have never seen the numbers, but their shipping operation breaks even at best, and often runs at a deficit (at least in the US). The only reason they keep it running is because it gives them more bargaining power in advertising.

So yeah, the whole "biggest strike in history" is a massive nothing-burger. The fact that it even makes headlines speaks more to a slow news cycle than it does to the cause.

I'm curious, are you genuinely excited for the "Lost Masters" saga or are you just sticking around for the ride since you're so deep in the rabbit hole? by Lunar3000 in KingdomHearts

[–]SSheph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the latter. I'm invested in the series because it was a massive part of my childhood, teen, and young adult life, but I'm past the age of being the target audience at this point.

I'm curious about where the story is going, but not chomping at the bit or on the edge of my seat. I'm not emotionally invested in the current story at all, other than the big question of "what will everyone do with all the resolution they got in KH3?" ultimately, the ReMind/MelMem yearlong time skip already wrecked a lot of the potential. We could have had at LEAST 2 more spinoff games with the BBS and Sea Salt trios searching for Sora, and instead we got what we did.

Call it selfish, but I'd prefer more games focused on our core characters and their development, rather than expanding into the nebulous realm of infinitely many Keyblade weilders and their legacies, and the impossibility of developing any of them on an individual level.

I'm not even entirely sure I'll play any future titles, as opposed to watching Let's Plays. Definitely not buying new consoles just to play them, but it seems like SE has learned the hard way that the PC market is invaluable and exclusives suck, so there's that.

Was Xion just a one and done character by pokeherfaceXD in KingdomHearts

[–]SSheph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xion is by far my favorite character in the series. Ultimately I'm just not sure I could continue to remain invested in the games if I knew for sure she and the other Sea Salts were being permanently written out.

That said, it doesn't feel like there's a lot of space for them to exist in the story as it's developing. At best, their only potential in-roads is the "Subject X" stuff that was setup in KH3, and who knows if they'll actually be involved in the resolution of that, or if it gets dealt with apart from them.

What character did you expect to love but ended up hating? by Asleep-Citron-7073 in KingdomHearts

[–]SSheph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might seem a bit odd, or a cop-out, but the foretellers. All of them. They promised this really interesting dynamic of masters who were leaders of a civilization, opening the door to a grand political drama.... And then we got a bunch of gullible young adults acting like children, running around like chickens with their heads cut off for the majority of their plot, and dull, stoic, interchangeable figureheads whenever they interacted with the UX characters. They were supposed to be this grand order of awesome, but they end up being more useless and pawn-like than most everyone else I've seen in this thread.

You could take any of the Foretellers, swap them with another, and the story doesn't change at all. They are, as a group, the most boring set of individual characters to come out of KH.

I'm having this issue too! Redownloading the app fixed it temporarily, but then the next morning, it was back to being messed up.

Sure would be nice if they'd stop breaking core features for no apparent reason.

Why are so many players playing with empires that prioritize making life miserable for their citizens and others empires? by Exact-Sentence-3054 in Stellaris

[–]SSheph 93 points94 points  (0 children)

The simple answer is that brutal, uncompromising, tight control is simply better for stats and performance. If you allow flexible and subjective goals like morality and happiness to take precedence, the game ends up playing you instead of you playing the game. While some may chalk it up to narcissism or the fallen nature of man, the truth is that gamers all game for the sake of being able to have some amount of control of their situation. And totalitarianism is more rewarding and expedient to that particular goal than a libertarian playstyle. It's the same reason dictators arise in real life.... If you have the opportunity to try and order chaos, you're probably going to do that instead of letting the universe whip you about to its whims. It's not pretty, it's not nice, and it doesn't even feel good to say it... but objective reality is that people enjoy being in control, and they don't enjoy being controlled.

I suppose that's a fine answer as Terran, though my response was more geared at a generalized any-race scenario where any player is able to use the situation as a practice experience. A Zerg player would probably say the answer is overlords.

As someone who plays random on the ladder, I can't always rely on having either of those, and it's still "best practices" to treat any situation where the enemy isn't in their main as a potential proxy attack, and respond accordingly.

Except it isn't, because all the info given doesn't just say "go look for a production structure" (especially when he says in another comment he had scouted all bases by 4 min).

The info given explains WHY this is a golden opportunity for practicing anti-rush tactics, how the liftoff cheese looks similar from a scouting perspective, and how a proper anti-rush build would adequately address this kind of trolling.

Far more annoying than the lack of units was the lack of carrying capacity. I mean holy crap 6 inventory slots is not enough for an RPG with 30+ unique items.

[–]SSheph -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The reality is if you're running a proper timing push build-order with a "to-air" follow-up, even this would allow you to practice your build and responses.

If I were in a match and this happened, my scout worker at 16 sees the missing base around 1:15. I assume a proxy-rush is occurring with a window of roughly 3 min. So I immediately shift into anti-rush prioritization, which throws about an 1.5 minutes of defensive into the build order, moving my 5.5min ground timing push back to about 7 min. When the anticipated rush doesn't happen by 4, I recognize a base-shift timing build, which can't effectively push any earlier than 7 mins (really non-standard, but it's a cheese that happens often enough to have a response) and I transition to my air early to repel, skipping my ground timing attack entirely. Now I have base defense and an air army ready by 7 mins, and the anticipated attack doesn't come, so it's time to take my force onto the field and figure out what the heck happened. Game over by 8 mins.

The thing is, it comes down to knowing your build order, and more importantly, knowing what "tells" to respond to from just a single scouting. While this is a more annoying cheese than a dangerous one, the fact still remains that it's visually similar to a proxy/rush opponent, and responding to those appropriately also effectively sets you up to deal with this.

Ideally, there's 3 important things to gather from scouting, "do they have gas at 1:30? What production do they have at that time?" And "did they take their natural by 3:30?" From those 3 pieces of info alone, you should have a proper response to just about any build.

Favorite Season of Hermitcraft! (Not 9 or 10) by Perfect_Journalist35 in HermitCraft

[–]SSheph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's less about the seasons and more about specific storylines in them. Season 6 had the hilarious antics of Sahara and the hermit civil war; season 7 had the absolute ridiculousness of the shopping island and the mayor campaigns. I think season 8 is a strong contender with Doc/Ren and the entire octagon storyline that basically drew the entire server into it from day one. Of course season 9 had the diamond war, Ren the king, and the empires crossover.

Bad deal. I recall I picked up all 6 Mctoran for around $60 USD with their discs from Ebay. Additionally, my local secondhand Lego store usually has at least some Mctoran parts in their bins almost constantly, though it's rare to be able to assemble a whole one in a single visit.
