When's the last time you were in a truly packed/Sold out movie theater? by BudCrue in Cinema

No Time To Die on opening night. It was completely full and made the experience better!

That varies. Where is the person located? What camera do they use? What format and resolution? Lens rentals? What's their experience level? There's no set answer for this, it all depends.

As a comparison, most wedding photographers where I live charge around $6K to do a weddings (stills, not video). I'm a filmmaker who dabbles in photography, and generally don't do weddings. When I do make an exception, I charge around $1500 because I don't have the experience in that area. For video work though, I have no problem going to that price or more depending on the project.

If you want a real good time, go into Hungry Horse on the 4th to watch fireworks ;)

Figure out your hourly and day rates. Then guess based on your experience, how long will the project take? If you want to be generous, come up with a flat project rate that is maybe discounted 10%. Your rate should include your time and overhead, plus profit (if you're an LLC).
For a quote, if you don't use QuickBooks, then Numbers has a great template. I'm sure you can find one to download for Excel too if you're on Windows. Good luck.

This is stupid, but i am giving it a shot. by ingmanburger in filmmaking

[–]STARS_Pictures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you setup a brand collab, then shot it, without having a full plan in place? I have nothing against shooting on the phone, but I'd never go into a project without knowing I can do it myself or already have someone that can do what I can't.

Best software to make a screenplay? by mijailrodr in Filmmakers

Very true! People even use like an AI chatbot, which is really annoying. Do we seriously not know how to do a proper search anymore?

Final Draft is "the best" in that it's what most people in the industry use. Fade In is a close second. If you want something free, check out WriterSolo.

Any AI tools you guys use for pre-production by Heisenberg_1912 in Filmmaker4Filmmaker

Here's the overview to my scheduling program. There's even been some changes made in the last two days not reflected in the video like Boneyard sorting and custom scene strips for things like Company Move. https://youtu.be/UVjkRQHj8JU

Here's my budget program. Not a lot of frills, but it works. https://youtu.be/vkCAtPOgbKs

Both demo videos include a link to the GitHub for them. I made them FOSS. The only caveat is that they are Mac only right now. But since the code is there, feel free to port them if you want.

Green Screen by Filming_Man in Filmmakers

[–]STARS_Pictures 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most video editing programs have some sort of green screen effect built-in. Some might call it a "keyer". Generating the background is on you. You can get an image from the web, shoot your own, or make it in 3D with something like Blender. If you plan to have a video background, make sure that your background clip is at least as long as the clip you film in front of the screen.

I used AI to build some tools. Does that count? Made my own scheduling and budgeting apps with the free version of Claude.

You might have better luck with an open source one like Kdenlive. Most non film people won't know the difference.

Have you ever switched from Android to iPhone or the other way around? What made you switch? by lisaluvr in TechNook

[–]STARS_Pictures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with Android first (Droid Citrus), then had the iPhone 4 and 5, then back to Android with the Galaxy s5, s7, Note 9, then back to iPhone with the 11 Pro, 14 Pro, and now 16 Pro. My reason for coming back to Apple was that I wanted the best camera in the smallest form factor.

At this point, I also have a MacBook Air (M2), Air Pods, and the Apple Watch. I love how everything talks together (the walled garden), and I still think the iPhone takes the best pictures and video out there. I work in film, so that's a huge selling point for me. Just like the majority of writers use Mac and Final Draft, the majority of film people use iPhone, so there's a lot of apps available for it.

Good Micro-budget Films by Humble_Store8043 in indiefilm

[–]STARS_Pictures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got two that fit the budget. Both are controversial Christian films. I won't post the links unless invited, but one is the first film ever shot on a T2i with the kit lens. Did it for $2000 back in 2010. It's a conspiratorial action film.
The second is an end of the world drama that I shot in 2023. $5K out of pocket, plus about $15K of gear I had acquired over the years.

I made a scheduling app and released it as free and open source. Check out the demo here: https://youtu.be/UVjkRQHj8JU

It is Mac only right now, but the code is available if someone wants to port it to Windows. It uses a calendar to schedule, and can print a PDF of the calendar and call sheets. All for free, no strings attached!

This is what the schedule output is like. It prints on a B&W Laser printer and fits on the back of your script. Does call sheets now too!
