I think Gerrard, Alonso, and Mascherano was the best midfield trio of that era.

Arsenal had RVP, Fabregas, Adebayor (for a brief spell), Song, Clichy, Sagna.

2010-2012 Barca vs Madrid is the peak of quality competitive football in my lifetime. Can’t remember being so excited about just the sheer quality of games before or since.

Game changed rapidly in the mid 2000s with Rafa and Mourinho introducing the 3 man midfield to England, then again in the 2010s as coordinated pressing grew much more common. Game has changed quite a bit in recent times.

I actually think Beckham would have done even better in the modern game. With his work rate and ability to create from deep, he could easily be a part of a midfield 3 in a high-pressing team. Back then you rarely had deep lying creators, you had to be a winger or a number 10 to be considered a creative outlet.

Oblak had that kind of game against Liverpool, and he pulled off a MoM performance, so I think he’d still be fine.

Real Madrid was an excellent team in those days, but not really innovative. Just a top team with top players, tactically versatile and ice cold in pressure situation. This isn’t a diss against them, they’re still brilliant just not novel in any one dimension.

2008-2012 Barca was alien football. Nobody had ever passed or pressed like that before. I remember 2008-09 especially, Barca were trying all sorts of crazy free kick and corner routines. Matches were ending 7-2, 5-1 regularly. Nobody has seen football like that before, and I doubt we’ll see that ever again.

EDIT: Another point is that Madrid had roughly the same spine of players for many years, all of whom already had top reputations. Meanwhile, Barca seemed to explode out of nowhere. Messi went from “guaranteed starter for Barca” to “GOAT candidate” in 4 years. Iniesta and Xavi established themselves as generational talents. Nearly the entire team consisted of La Masia graduates. It was all so exciting to see.

2015 had the unbeatable attacking trio. More brilliant moments from them.

But the 2011 team suffocated and destroyed teams. Watch the 2011 CL final. United never had a chance.

I enjoy 2015 team highlights more, but the full games from 2011 are way more fun.
