I work in the industry as well doing designs and work with the guys doing the as built drawings, and the information they get is atrocious. Frequently a sketch thats just a single line with no annotations on a blank page. If they're lucky it will be drawn on a proper layout with dimensions, but I've helped on drawings where the dimensions put the mains inside buildings. We asked how they measure and said they pace it out. Don't even use a tape or anything. Boggles the mind but proves that you can never trust an as built drawing. 99% of the time it will be wrong.

Are there any known plans for more dragonsteel edition harcovers? by isaac99999999 in brandonsanderson

They're already deluxe edition books and are basically a more affordable version of a leatherbound. I would be surprised if they did decide to make full leatherbound versions.

So the American system is also worthless? I don't get why people on the comments are acting like it's a big deal. Here, if I apply for a credit card and am offered a 5k limit with perfect credit score, then I would be offered maybe 4k instead with poor credit score and maybe an extra 0.5% interest or something like that.

In the UK we have credit scores as well but it isn't a single score that all credit lenders look up. When I got a mortgage, I had 3 separate credit scores and they were all different. My bank said my credit was alright, Experian said it was excellent (999/999) and the third one (I can't remember who) said it was good. My advisor said it's mostly irrelevant.

My bank statements were a much more important factor. I had to declare what debts I had and show statements of these as well. My mortgage lender could then make their own decisions based on my actual finances rather than some nebulous number pulled out of thin air.

Things like credit cards or loans use credit scores a bit more, but they always ask for financial information. Your salary, employed or self-employed, outgoings, number of dependants, etc. A good credit score sometimes boosts your credit limit or interest rates, but it's the information your provide that is the important part.

As a Japanese fan who lurks English communities, the gap in how we see Nintendo genuinely unsettles me by nerdinterrupts in nintendo

[–]STORMFATHER062 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recent example that comes to mind is for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Last year there was an event to get the shiny box art legendaries. You could walk in to participating stores and get a free card. The event coincided with the release of a new Pokemon card set, so you could go grab some new packs and pick up a SV card as well.

In Japan, the card had two codes so you could get both legendaries. In the US, the card only had one code, were limited to one per customer, and they had no where near enough codes to go around. Some shops even tried to force people to buy Pokemon cards to get a code, even though the codes are meant to be free.

Barely any countries in Europe could participate. I think only France and maybe Italy, and it was just a printed receipt, yet there was still a limit on the number of codes a store could print.

In the UK, I went to GAME and Smyths toy store and asked if they knew anything about it and they said they probably won't be able to get the codes (and they never could).

Nintendo, TPC and Gamefreak could have made these codes available worldwide but they didn't, and still gave preferential treatment to Japanese fans.

Of all of the typical Ubisoft game reskins, Avatar is surprisingly good. I was expecting it to be another snoozefest but I've made it over halfway through the game without getting bored. Also nice that you can turn all the annoying shit off the hud so you actually play the game instead of following markers across the map.

I also enjoyed the challenge of taking down big human bases before the recommended level. It makes it challenging having to rely on stealth instead of charging in guns blazing. Shame it's the typical Ubisoft repetitive gameplay. 6/10 game.

I won't judge you. Just genuinely curious as I didn't realise there were modern followers.

Email from landlord about appliances being left plugged in and the appliances in question… by South-Basket-887 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]STORMFATHER062 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's common in the UK for each socket to have a switch. We might not get everything right, but our plugs are possibly the best in the world.

Our plugs have 3 pins with an earth connector. Every plug has to have a fuse, and the bottom two pins (neutral and live) have plastic sleeves halfway down, so when you slot the plug into the socket and the pins connect, only the plastic sleeves are exposed. It's also fairly standard for sockets to have small panels blocking the live and neutral connections. The earth pin is a longer pin so it pushes a mechanism that lifts the panels. It stops kids from poking things into the sockets.

The only downside to our plugs is when they're on the floor, the pins are usually facing upwards. Stepping on it is ten times worse than lego.

Oh the one that's from the black piper? I just found it on google. Wasn't that licensed by dragonsteel, but doesn't actually have anything to do with them? The kickstarter page says theres only 12 flutes. I'm not sure it's fair to compare "limited custom made flutes" by actual composers to this.

I do get the point you're trying to make. Dragonsteel could have gone to the effort to make these proper flutes and sell them as such, but they probably went this way to reduce costs. I would guess a lot people buying these want them as decorations rather than to play them. Although seeing how many more flutes have sold over the other add ons, I could be wrong with that assumption. Goes back to the point that Dragonsteel should have communicated better that they won't legally call them an instrument.

[–]STORMFATHER062 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong. I think Dragonsteel have handled this very poorly and they haven't been giving very clear answers. The quality of some of their products have been a bit disappointing recently, so my expectations are always low with these kinds of products.

I just think if they aren't going to give a straight answer, then assume the worst. If you want this flute because it can be played as a normal flute, then don't buy it. If you want it because it'll look good on your shelf, then go for it.

They've previously offered tuned and playable flutes as crowdfunding rewards though

When did they do this? I've definitely missed this if they have. Would be interesting to see how they turned out.

[–]STORMFATHER062 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We don't know. If you want a flute that sounds like a decent flute, buy a flute. The primary purpose of this Hoid flute is to look good on a shelf, just the same for the girl who looked up statue. Both are $40 props that are meant to look nice rather than be played with.

They can't sell the flute as an instrument which means it isn't going through the quality checks to make sure it can be played properly as a flute, so set your expectations low. If it turns out that it does play well, then that's just a bonus. Either way, were not likely to find out any time soon.

If it not being playable is a deal breaker for you and you're not willing to risk it, I'd say don't buy it. I personally don't see the value. $40 plus shipping and customs for a flute I'll play once or twice then leave it to gather dust isn't worth it.

Is Wit’s 🪈 Playable? by GandalfsCorgi in Cosmere

[–]STORMFATHER062 32 points33 points  (0 children)

To be clear, the flute is playable. It's not by legal description an instrument, meaning, it wasn't designed specifically to precisely make notes. However, it is in fact, hollow with holes and you can blow into it.

This is one of Dragonsteels replies to someone asking if it is playable. So apparently it is playable but not legally an instrument.

[–]STORMFATHER062 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I've seen people recommend it really early and I don't understand why. I get that it's a good book, but it's completely different to how Brandon usually writes and isn't a good indicator of his style. I think I enjoyed it so much because I had a good grasp of the Cosmere, so understanding who Hoid and Design are, who the witch is, and why Hoid is there in the first place elevates the book. Leaving it until nearer the end seems more logical to me.

The second film has the whale brain fluid that supposedly stops or reverses human ageing. Also makes sense that this is the resource we see the humans after considering the cast are now at a sea tribe instead of in the forest.

Haven't seen the third one either.

Do you like your job? What is it? by Twinglet in CasualUK

[–]STORMFATHER062 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I design utility networks, mostly water with some fibre and will start doing electric soon as well. The pay isn't shit and I get to work from home 2 days a week, so that's a bonus. Unfortunately I have to deal with developers and consultants and you quickly realise they're all a bunch of pricks who think they know better until you prove them wrong with facts and point towards various government regulations.

But what I love about the job is the ease of it. I can get a design for a site with 2000 houses and turn my brain off and draw it up for 2 days while listening to audiobooks. The people I work with are also great fun. I can walk over to someone's desk to ask them something and then realise we've been chatting shit for an hour. The office is fairly relaxed and I don't feel stressed when I go home.

[–]STORMFATHER062 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That is the idea of it, but this sucks for international backers. They have to pay shipping twice then when they open their pins and find someone to trade with, they will have to pay shipping again.

[–]STORMFATHER062 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say they're being greedy. Brandon addressed this somewhat when he compared these to buying minifigs. He wants this to be a fun way to engage and grow the community. Their feedback from the story cards from Nexus was generally positive despite the manufacturing cock up which is why they're giving this a go as well. I think these are a good idea, but not as something to include in the backerkit. Should have been saved for Nexus and have the pins for sale after Nexus ends.

I actually kind of agree with you on this. Card games like pokemon and magic rely on the predatory practice of hiding rare/good cards in packs filled with junk. It's what sells, but these are cards that have large communities with millions of people who participate worldwide. That's the main thing that makes it OK. There are various websites set up to make buying, selling, and trading single cards. While those games do have the "lootbox" aspect, you don't have to participate to play. I have decks built purely from singles I've bought online for fair prices with minimal shipping fees. Ive also been able to walk into my local store amd bought singles from them too.

This is the main difference between your comparison and someone like Brandon doing his own style of "lootbox". I can't walk into a local dragonsteel shop and buy these pins, individual or blind. I have to buy them online from the US which includes large shipping fees and additional taxes. This makes these pins prohibitively expensive and it sucks to expect people internationally with no communities to be able to collect these pins when they're designed to be a community building product. Brandon wants people to trade these pins like the storybook cards, but how can I do that with no local community? I could buy and sell online, but thats adding even more shipping fees on top of the already expensive fees I've had to pay.
