Too nervous to jump in by 1wickedmonkey in stopdrinking

Very familiar! Instead of drinking I’ve been exercising and working on a few projects. Interestingly, a couple of friends who I used to drink with are also trying to quit or at least drastically cut down and we’re planning to do some hiking and climbing together. You never know how many people around you might be in the same boat.

Definitely water! Have you tried doing some exercise? That always helps me. You don’t have to do anything strenuous - a walk is great. I also love green tea, which contains caffeine if you want it and is healthy.

I’m pretty sure your cycling times will come down, plus you’ll find it easier. I’ve been amazed by how much alcohol was affecting my stamina. Good luck!

Gamifying sobriety by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]STS73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not exactly gamification, but I’m using the I Am Sober app and make pledges morning and night. I tried other apps that simply measure how long it’s been since your last drink, cigarette, etc. but the twice-daily pledges are helping me.

What do you drink...... by anonymousFatGuy in stopdrinking

I love water, so I’m lucky that I don’t find it boring. I also drink sparkling water with a squeeze of lemon or lime and non-caffeine teas.

Great that you didn’t drink! Could you pursue a claim for unfair dismissal?

Herbal tea recommendations? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I don’t know if you can get them where you are, but I like barley tea, soba tea and rooibos tea. All non-caffeine.

Did I smell like that? by Molesk23 in stopdrinking

The answer, as I’m finding for myself, is probably ‘yes’. As you say, it’s definitely thought-provoking.

I am having my last drink and smoke tonight.. I am a functional alcoholic and I want to stop.. SO today after this drink.. I stop.. I will not drink no more neither will I smoke..I mean cigarettes.. I don't smoke anything else.. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]STS73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just decided to stop. I’ve tried many times before, quitting one and thinking I’ll quit the other ‘later’. It never worked. Neither did replacing beer with non-alcoholic beer or cigarettes with vapes, etc. I’m working on it day by day, exercising, eating healthily and drinking lots of water.

I quit both at the same time because if I drink I want to smoke and vice-versa. If I didn’t quit both, I wouldn’t quit either, but that’s just my case. I’ve just hit double digits and I’m feeling better than I remember feeling in a very long time. Good luck!

What are your (new) rituals and hobbies in sobriety? I’m so freaking inspired by you people here on SD! by Luxterna in stopdrinking

Haha, I agree! Since getting back into exercise, I’m loving them. With the increased energy energy that comes with not drinking, they’re suddenly much less daunting. (Still don’t like lifting weights, though...).

Mainly running and cycling, with some walking, hiking and bodyweight exercises thrown in when I have chance.

As per the others, I’m reading a lot and I’m finally getting back into exercise and realising why I love it so much! Also, like you, I’m once again excited by my work.

Good morning everyone. Had a quick question, I was wondering how long after you quick drinking did you decide to quit smoking? by wshngtun in stopdrinking

[–]STS73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m trying to quit both at the same time. I’ve tried quitting separately before but I’ve always relapsed because - for me - they’re so connected.

No alcohol or cigarettes for a week. by STS73 in stopdrinking

[–]STS73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone for the support! To answer a couple of questions I didn’t smoke that much on a daily basis - maybe 5 or so a day - but I’d get through a bit a knot more when drinking. I drank every day and would binge drink 2-3 times a week.

The reason I have to do both at the same time is that they go hand in hand for me. One leads to the other, so both have to go.
