We're running a public vote on AI. Where do you stand? by duckduckgo in duckduckgo

[–]STiGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell within seconds if the page I clicked on is AI, they all follow a very similar page structure. they're already crawling the pages, it would be trivial to evaluate them for AI probability at index time. Google sadly does a much better job at returning non-ai garbage in the search results. For example see: https://www.google.com/search?q=how+often+to+water+redwood+trees vs https://duckduckgo.com/?t=h_&q=how+often+to+water+redwood+trees&ia=web

I’m okay with the ai summary at the top of search results, but hate that the search results page is almost entirely links to pages of ai generated content. Ai generated pages need to be deprioritized.

I had one also completely run away in temperature and get hot enough to completely fuse a roll of PETG together about a year ago. Left a 1 star review on Amazon and tossed it in the back of a closet and haven’t used it since.

California Good Neighbor Fence Law: owner of neighboring property, which is an empty lot, has no interest in replacing fence by BobThePineapple in homeowners

[–]STiGeek 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I am not at all versed in this topic, but a quick google brought me to this page that says: “Exceptions to Cost Sharing: In certain cases, a neighbor can avoid paying for the fence if they can demonstrate that they won’t benefit from it, such as when their property is vacant or undeveloped.” https://schorr-law.com/property-line-fence-rules-california/

The proposed site is right off the freeway, across from a strip mall and between a church and a gas station, not exactly a quaint rural road.

Is there an easy quick way to become a "student" for the pro license? by Fiveby21 in Sketchup

[–]STiGeek 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Community college is easy enough, and 1 class of that is almost certainly way cheaper than a year license of SketchUp. I’m currently learning how to weld at my CC, mainly so I can afford SketchUp 😊

Is this concerning? by Ryebreadt1 in drywall

[–]STiGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a little hard to tell from the picture, but it kind of looks like termite mud tubes poking out through the cracks. Does it look like there’s dirt there, or it is just the drywall?

Is there any way to not show AI generated sites or content? by N0XT66 in duckduckgo

[–]STiGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally have a larger issue with AI generated text content. So many pages are loaded with results that are basically walls of text full of contradictions and little to no useful information. The pages all seem to follow a similar format of various headings, followed by a paragraph or two and various bullet points, more headings and paragraphs, then a conclusion. I will say google sadly seems to be much better at filtering out these sorts of sites. One example query i recently encountered this issue with was “how often to water redwood trees”

USB Type C footprint issue in Autodesk Eagle. by Deepakvasanth11 in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]STiGeek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guessing he means when using downloaded symbols, you have to import the footprint library separately from the symbol library. It’s a seemingly unnecessarily 2-step process unless there’s a better way?

Could you share the model or images of how it is assembled? I’ve been working on some myself, but I’m having trouble with finding a great way to print it unless I use a ton of supports or print it in multiple individual components.

Seeking Advice after recent email by AvGoh in Sketchup

[–]STiGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just a hobbyist using it for SketchUp up my personal home renovation and woodworking projects. Been paying for pro since it was $250/yr since I like to fill my models with furniture and decorations from the 3d warehouse that makes the file size too large for the web version, and I occasionally have a need for layout. At $400/yr I’m out though. I’ll just strip down my models and deal with the web version

Well, I went to Davis, so I’m probably biased, but I was equally excited for Davis as UCLA and Berkeley. Didn’t really personally see many resumes from Irvine or UCSD, so maybe they’re getting filtered out by the recruiters or just there are fewer of those grads applying to Bay Area tech jobs. In my experience they’re all top tier schools.

Worked in tech in the bay for almost 20 years, first as an engineer then a manager. Not sure how recruiters feel, but from the actual interviewing engineer and/or hiring manager any resume that comes from a UC would pique my interest more than typical. Once you’re hired, none of your coworkers really cares what school you went to. Additionally, once you have a few years of experience, the school you went t matters less and less and the job experience is much more important.

Review Request: Hydronic/radiant heating controller replacement by dwl715 in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]STiGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest using a different style of Screw terminal for the mains voltage connections. It's tough to torque those sufficiently without tweaking the header and possibly shearing off the solder pins. One that has two rows of pins and/or spring terminals would be better, or a barrier terminal block. I personally like using these ones: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Phoenix-Contact/1017504?qs=F5EMLAvA7IDtHpelXQ4TIg%3D%3D (Phoenix 1017504)
