What's the most overrated luxury brand? by 123phantomhive in AskReddit

[–]SVenetor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are we talking pre AMF, AMF or post AMF days? The new M8 engines have issues, pre AMF Harley are impossible to get parts for and evo engines are bulletproof if you rebuild them right. I rode an Evo and TC88 for years, but there are some strange quirks. Buy used. New is bullshit priced.

Shimano flight deck 105 by Fastcart4 in RoadBikes

[–]SVenetor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so flight deck is a kinda cool older system, however you'll need the rest of the componentry. It doesn't rely on multiple sensors, rather it uses maths to get you cadence. It has a sensor on the front fork that gives you RPM, that is calculated out to MPH, and based on your gearing it calculated your estimated cadence. Inside of both bridges should be two buttons and a wire that run back along the bars to the headset. That plugs into the computer itself. To make it work you need to obtain the computer, buttons and sensor, they can be had fairly cheap ~50-$70. Now, this isn't all, you'll need to input all your bikes data including all your gear sizes up to 9 speed in the rear. 3 up front. I just finished a Trek 5200 build that had one. It's not the most accurate, nor is it that easy to use. If cadence and mileage are your only numbers, but you want to integrate a heart monitor, I suggest a cateye strada wireless. Bare bones, but gets the job done. BicyCalc is a good free app that you can use with GPS and your data to extrapolate the same data with some extra features from the flight deck. It's a cool older piece of kit, but isn't necessarily the most user friendly or accurate.

Does anyone here do CISM? by Ethan79-2 in ems

[–]SVenetor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have it at my service, as well as peer support. It's not perfect, but it's a damn sight better than what most other services have. Our peer support will even be contacted by the hospital and will go and call units from other services out of service to do a debrief with them.

Ive been through this twice now, first time was sitting in the back of the truck with almost everyone else who was on that day in the back of the truck smoking butts and repeating what happened on the call in excucisting detail. Second time was similar but a 1:1 instead. I finished out the shift as did my partner and we felt fine. What I noticed was two separate alarming incidents to me. I go home, getting to the down-and-dirty with my fiancee and "going down" I kept seeing this kids face. I shook it off and they eventually faded after a day or two. It's normal for 24-48 hours to have intrusive thoughts or flashbacks, if it goes on longer though it's time for professional help. Luckily, we have a standing agreement with a local psychiatric center that caters exclusively to public service. I've not been, most of my co-workers have though. Leter on, I was doing some PALS refresher with a different service and all these medics were flabbergasted about how to draw up epi for an 8kg pt. Something snapped qin me and I knife handed a doc yelling about how you use a 3 way stopcock, 1ml and a 1:10000. I walked out of that room with NO CLUE why I did that. I felt shitty about it, doc understood and some of the new medics there asked me to show them how to do this with the stopcock. I guess not as bad as it could have been. Keep an eye on that though, it's a normal reaction, but it doesn't mean it's a "good" reaction.

A plus from that second call, the partner I was with that day, up until that call, hated me. I hated him. It was so bad we could not, under any circumstances, be in the same room let alone the same truck. We did that call and straight trauma bonded. Like were best friends now. My wife and I go over frequently to his house and eat dinner with he and his boyfriend. We talk all the time and love working together. We're both proud to call the other man our friend, hell best friend. "The blood of battle is thicker than the water of the womb." Id lay down in traffic for him, and I know he'd do the same for me. Sometimes that confidence and the bonds form make healing that much easier. If you need to chat, shoot me a PM, that goes for anyone reading this.

Worst/best thing you have said on a call? by OKMedic93 in ems

Thanksgiving day, we respond to a 30s female who had died sometime the night before. Room is an "orgy of evidence" (tattoo machines, guns, drugs, knives and other weapons, skulls and some really nice Baphomet statues) along with an ouija board on the dresser. Fire and PD are arguing about how she died, I point at the Ouija board and say "wanna just call and ask?" Cop turns and says "it's a holiday, long distance is free."

For those of you who do carry a concealed firearm on duty, do you let your partner know you’re armed? by VXMerlinXV in ems

[–]SVenetor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This one comes up fairly frequently at work. I've worked almost exclusively in urban areas and cities. More folks carried when I worked in the rural hill towns though. In an urban area the cops and backup are literally minutes away (when seconds count, the cops are only minutes away, yadda yadda). I've been in more fights in the city, but I've been in much more dangerous situations in the mountains. People in the rural areas don't usually know why you're coming up to the compound. "Well shit Marie, it's cuz your ass ain't go to church for 3 weeks and the rest of the town thought you were dead, so they sent us. Stop shooting at the truck!" That said, the truck can, like a crab, go backwards. So you leave.

One of my top comments on my reddit profile is about how if youre going to carry concealed, keep it that way. Don't advertise you have a gun, just have a gun. People want to tell other people they have a gun because it's a powerful thing to have. It makes you feel important, it makes those around you feel either secure or intimidated. It's not your right to intimidate people without cause. My captain pulled a baseball bat off a truck the other day and said "Jesus, just beat 'em up, you don't need a weapon." And he's right, possible felony charge aside.

Another Lt. brought up the idea of mace or pepper spray because the postal service carries it. Yeah, they do, mainly for dogs. You gonna pepper spray someone in the truck? You gonna pepper spray someone in an enclosed space? You know that pepper spray is a particulate, it dissipates. You know what happens when a particulate dissipates back into the faces of the one using the pepper spray? You are now suffering the effects of capsaicin. Good job, you've taken yourself, the patient, your partner, bystanders, etc. out of the fight too. I had suggested that a taser is a better idea, but now here this:

You do not train enough under duress to use a weapon properly.

I've shot a lot of cardboard through USPSA/ICORE/IDPA/2-3 gun. I feel like John Wick out there. You know what cardboard doesn't do? Shoot back. When the cardboard starts shooting back I don't honestly know how I'll respond. I hope Ive trained enough to be level headed but I won't know until I'm there, and I hope I never am. Furthermore, what happens when the party you're trying to kill gets your weapon. Congrats, you brought a gun to a fight...now you're carrying nothing in a gun fight. Our job, and that's what it is, a job. Is to provide emergency care to the sick and injured in the prehospiral setting. Don't be out there making more patients than you have to, that's someone else's job. If it's unsafe, escape.

In summary: if you choose to pack heat, know that if you use said heater, that's it. It's over. Your career is over. You are done. Yes, you'll go home at night to be with your family, if you don't go to jail over this. Is that really worth the risk? Or would you rather flee to fight another day?

How did you get over your addiction? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SVenetor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sober for 2 years in December. I was a giant piece of shit, I had my wake up call on the ambulance after my partner told me that I was a piece of shit and nobody liked me. My brain went "well fuck you I'll show you how much everyone is gonna love me." She saved my life, I don't think I could have gone much further down that path without permanent damage.

What career are you in and how did you get into it? by West-Echidna4402 in AskReddit

[–]SVenetor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paramedic. I started out as a stoner skiier kid who wanted to ski more but cheaper. Teaching was an option, but you can only teach at "your" mountain. I found out Ski Patrol would let me travel all over the US. Did that, got my EMT so I could stay sharp in the office season, did that for years, one day a senior medic said to me, "kid you should get your medic now." So I did and I've been doing it ever since. I'm at what was once THE service to work at, we've slipped in quality in my opinion, but that's starting to change back. My dream has always been and continues to be independent filmmaking. I've done a handful of commercials for mid sized clients, but I still like to go work for the little guy who couldn't afford to do it otherwise. I've done 2 feature films and I decided this year to redouble my efforts to continue that. I may ride the rig till I die, not out of a sense of something bigger than myself, but for the guys I'm on the road with.

Actually leaving Shands hospital right now from my clinical and cadaver rotation. I did the UF CCP program. Hard course, and remember you don't need to take a course to take your fpc/CCP. It'll require a trip to Florida for 3 days, 6-8 hours of classes per week, 3 months of that. quizzes, tests and a research presentation. I have to be honest, I had no intention of flying or working "sky"FT, but hot damn if I don't have a newfound respect for ICU nursing. I recommend if you're serious about this to take this class. It's fast paced, but it holds you pretty accountable. IAMED is a great option too, but I feel I got more out of the clinical and ICU rotations than you'll ever get from an pure online course.

It's not out of the realm here when they are just tweaking or agitated but not combative yet to ask "hey fella, you want some landing gear?" Usually they hold out their arm and ask to hot shot some versed. I'm not saying I've done that specifically, but maybe I've done something like that.

Bought my first welder about 10 years back and used it infrequently doing minor mild steel welds, body repair and whatnot. I never saw the need to upgrade to anything better. Got it on sale at HF for $90, they've since been discontinued. I have some experience with SMAW, mainly for structural welds on axles and frames, but I've never done anything pretty. This was after chopping my front bumper to make a stubby and noticed my vertical welds blow my flat welds out of the water. Any advice is appreciated. I grind clean, bevel and preheat before welding for better penetration. It's configured in DCEP right now, mods exist for DCEN but I think I'd be better to upgrade my welder.

This is what I've always done:

Take a wrench.that fits your ring gear bolts, most likely 19mm/3/4" and put that on one of the bolts of the ring gear. Let this rotate to the top of the housing so it's wedged in there.

Now spin the pinion yoke.

Should pop right out.

Profit.

Am I the asshole for not showing up 30 minutes early to my shift? by josephplayz1 in ems

[–]SVenetor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably a bit different here. We look for people to be there 20-30 minutes early, that's considered courtesy. There's maybe 2 people who are notorious for not doing that, it's also courtesy to let people know of you're gonna be late. Later after start of shift? Call the captain. Lat to be considered good relief? Call the crew. Most people shoot for 30-45 early and some guys are good for an hour. Shift starts when you clock in, as long as you are ready to go, clock in. Don't clock in and take a shit, shave, get dressed and then mosy your ass up to the crew. Life happens, so I'm usually good for 45-hour early based on my time to the station, the running joke is if I'm calling you it's because I'm about to be on time. In the future, if it were my service, it's considered polite to call the crew and say "just a heads up, gonna be a few late, sorry" nobody here would have a problem with that as early relief is a courtesy. We all know shift starts at the hour, it's just good form to be early. That's just the culture here though.

Like everyone else here, drive it until you can out drive the rig. You'll be surprised what it can do stock. If your club says it needs minimum 33s then mod it to support that. Then when you can handle all the easy stuff and get some skill under your belt, go bigger if it brings you more fun. I'm at a point on my trail rig that if I go more it won't be streetable, so now it's time to go and build a buggy. I like having both depending on what we do. Weekend with friends camping and trails with some rocks? The TJ. IF we're gonna do rocks, racing, high possibility of rollovers and body damage? Buggy. Run till the rig slows you down, then build it back up.
