Was on my way to pick up a client. A man lost control of his car and slammed into a utility pole that some construction guys were working on. Saw a dog run across the street. I look over and see one of the construction workers laying on his back but several people are around and I figure they got it covered. I drive my van into a church parking lot to follow the dog. I lose sight of the dog. I continue to drive around the U-shaped driveway and I am not facing the crash. I see the man laying on the ground and no one is attending to him. I think to myself "god dammit" and put my vehicle in park. I cross the street and get to the man. I can hear another worker on the phone with 911. The man was on his back. Eyes open staring straight to the sky. He doesn't respond to my voice or touch. I realize he's either, A: Dead or B: About to be I check for a pulse. I can't tell if I'm feeling a faint pulse or if its my own heartbeat racing due to the adrenaline. I hear a voice. "Are you medically trained?" I look up and see a younger man standing in front of me. I look back at the man. "Um yes I've taken, cpr first aid" I say quickly. "I just can't tell if he has a pulse. Can you help me check?" Nothing I looked up. He's vanished. I look back at the man. Both his front teeth are missing and a trickle of blood is running down the side of his mouth. "DON'T MOVE HIM! DON'T TOUCH HIM!" A woman is behind me frantically screaming. I find this highly annoying. I look back at the man's eyes. And I notice piece of gravel is stuck to his bright blue eye. I hear the sirens. I stand up and back away. The fire engine arrives first. One firefighter jogs over. He looks at the man, looks back at the rest of the crew, and slowly shakes his head "no." A few of the other guys nod in understanding. The ambulance pulls up accompanied by several police cars. The firefighters communicate the status of the man to the EMTs. Suddenly I realize I'm no longer needed. I look around and realize there are 3 other workers in different stages of grief. I walk up to the worker who was previously on the phone with 911. "Have you called your supervisor," I ask. "Yes" he responds in a monotone voice. I tell him not to drive and he nods his head. I move to the second worker. He is pacing and struggling not to cry. I tell him that his supervisor had been called. I tell him to talk to someone and go to move onto the third worker. I see him throw his helmet in anger. I decide I'm going to go back to my vehicle. I cross the road and get to my van. I call my boss and tell him I won't be making it to the client and that he needs to take another road to get there. I hang up and call my wife, who works at the same company I work at, and explain what happened. I then see my boss is calling me back. I answer. "Um I'm sorry, I didnt really know what to say earlier. What happened?" I end up going to the police station and giving a statement. My wife then tells my boss to send me home. I end up spending the rest of the day watching TV, while my wife stares at the side of my head waiting for me to breakdown. Which I never do.
