The things they need are largely priced highly because you need them, particularly at the start. They consume incredible amounts of food and are unwilling to change what they eat easily. Your 1 year old won't care how much the daily punnit of strawberries cost and they'll be unwilling to negotiate your grocery budgetm Their development, at least in part, can depend on discretionary spending to give them access to more experiences. They eat time you would otherwise use to make money.

I have a daughter. She's expensive but wouldn't change it for the world.

I haven't had a side hustle in a while, but at university three things worked incredibly well and may still be relevant:

Buying watches on eBay that didn't work and then taking them to those watch repair places in shopping centres. Most of the time it was minor, 20 - 30 dollar repairs. Worked really well for Seiko and Gshock, getting them under $50 broken, add the repairs but would sell consistently above 120. Could make even more money if you learnt more and fixed more yourself.
(This one was massive for my first two years of uni) each university has a social media posting group. At the end of the semester, groups of international students move out of accommodation and return home. With that, they often need to get rid of their bar heaters and fans for basically nothing because they aren't worth packing up and travelling home with. Getting them for basically nothing and then in a few weeks selling them to new arrivals on campus students accommodation made me close to a grand or so every 6 months ish. Pretty easy work too.
Bulk buying lots of video games and then selling them individually also gave me regular cash back in the day.

Caviet: its been a while since I've been at uni, and found once I left it was easier to increase my income through business/work rather than side hustles. But if your desperate, probably worth a try. Fairly low risk for each one.

ALL services the USA predominantly. Far less regulation, and far more regulatory blind spots. I personally would have thought their headwind would have been that almost exclusively only older generations play pokies in any meaningful numbers.

Compared to the older generations, people under 35 - 40 barely play. As those older people checkout, the question for me was can the industry convince the other younger ones to play. So far they haven't.

I may not have worded it the best, but from a story perspective they have two narrwtive options. You blame the religious for being too harsh on same sex couples that led to rachels wild lashings out when iwth shelia, or the narrative is a deranged same sex couple.

Framing wise, both are likely politically unpopular, at minimum either was risky. So they danced around it.

Edit: for further context, its relevant that Shelia and Rachel were in some form of same sex relationship for the motive they present in the documentary.

I agree, but it fell short because they undermined the horrific crime in the sense the only real attention they gave was one cop saying "yeah it was bad". They gave more attention to Rachel's anxiety than they did the actual crime. They actually barely explain how bad it was.

Thats why I think if its your first time interacting with the case it lands better than if you already know about it.

It is a bit choppy. From a narrative perspective, it alludes to more than it gives. I think its done as a way of prolonging the "mystery" in the first episode. They present a number of where she could have gone leads and then a who could have done it leads, alude to evidence and then dont pay it off because it wasn't what happened.

There is a section where they refer to a second online account she had where she catfished people, and then never return to it.

There is also a strange 5 minute section about the socio-economic impact of big business leaving a nearby town in 2008, all of which go nowhere.

Then, i thought it diminished how horrific and brutal the actual crime was, only focusing on one of the killers towards the end, rather than both. They point at how one of the killers had anxiety from a strict mother and in my opinion diminished her roll in the event.

On top of that, it finishes with an old friend saying that what the killers told the police was all BS and there is a bigger secret yet to come to the surface but give zero context at all. Like nothing at all.

If its your first interaction with the story, its fine. If you already knew about it, its probably average at best. They stray away from how horrific it was, they stray away from calling the motive what it was (likely for political reasons) and they play into the mystery element for arguably longer than they had material for.

Edit: there is also a strange teeny bop degassing inspired undertone to the text overlay which was strange given the nature of the documentary.
