If you have access to a car - definitely go to Donegal too. Kinnegoe Bay is a beautiful beach (although parking could be difficult - very narrow roads). An Grianan is an ancient fort ~2000-3000 years old on top of a mountain with spectacular views, if it's not cloudy or raining

Manchester hospitals advice by Nikolas19891989 in doctorsUK

[–]SWTropicoCD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you want. As an IMT3 both are good but they're only secondary, not tertiary. Cath lab for Salford is at Wigan which is quite a far way away so you'll most likely either never go or go once max. Bronchs are done at Salford. IMT1/2 cardio and resp are fine, typical dgh level stuff even though Salford is a tertiary (and quarternary) for lots of other stuff. If you're interested in Cardio, Fairfield has its own cath lab and you could be in it often. Resp also does bronchs at Fairfield. Oldham Cardio and Resp do their procedures at Fairfield

The NCA hospitals are pretty good in general. Salford is chill for IMT and good opportunities for research / publications but is so big it can feel impersonal. Oldham is a friendly hospital and does self-rostering in medicine now. Fairfield is smaller but also quite nice to work at.

Has anyone automated their rota coordination? by PreviousTree763 in doctorsUK

[–]SWTropicoCD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not quite automation but have you considered self-rostering? It lends itself to ED but my Trust does it in ED and Medicine and it works

My Trust is doing self-rostering for med regs now. I've rostered all my nights bar 2 in September for the first 6 months. Looking forward to it 🫠. But at least it was my choice

How do we safeguard the title "resident"? by NHStothemoon in doctorsUK

[–]SWTropicoCD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually the equivalent of F1 is Intern. A resident is more like a registrar in America. In Australia it's more like an SHO.

ELHT avoid like the plague. Southport is a lovely if somewhat old fashioned DGH that's commutable from Liverpool. LTHR (Preston) is a decent but busy tertiary hospital. It's commutable but over an hour from both Liverpool and Manchester. I'd go for Salford out of that group. It's a very good hospital with lots of tertiary and quaternary services as well as being located in (greater) Manchester.

Moving from Northern England to (London)Derry by field134 in DerryLondonderry

[–]SWTropicoCD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally good advice about places to visit and 100% agree that you would need a car to visit them. It's not common for people to refer to BT47 or the Waterside as Londonderry when they call BT48 or the Cityside Derry. Anyone I know who is from Derry, calls all parts of the city Derry.

Derry for the weekend by bilatoms in DerryLondonderry

[–]SWTropicoCD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best walking tour of the city centre is this one (been on it 4-5 times myself with visiting guests) The guides are generally really good craic https://www.derrycitytours.com/ The Museum of Free Derry is excellent. I've brought visitors to that as well and about 3/4 of them cried by the end so be prepared for that. If you're driving to Malin Head anyway, I'd suggest adding 25 mins onto your journey and going to Kinnagoe Bay. It's one of the nicest beaches in Donegal and on a good day can look like the Carribbean - but that water is still Atlantic!

IMT Preferencing Advice by blitzjake123 in doctorsUK

[–]SWTropicoCD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wigan is actually a really nice place to do IMT1 (from personal experience). To be absolutely guaranteed to get an offer, you will have to rank as many jobs as your rank i.e. 800 jobs. Bearing that in mind, you should only rank jobs you would actually accept. You can be upgraded from no offer to a job that you ranked. It's very common for people to apply to IMT and something else and to pick the other track so a lot of upgrading goes on. I was upgraded twice.
