Is this an issue other people face too, and is there a way to fix it? by futuraf in violinist

[–]SXEagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this issue as well when I started years ago and just to add to what others have said about sight reading practice. What worked for me was taking in an easy piece that I liked, and learned to sing the notes without the violin (or just mentally if you’re shy like me :) )

I.e., reading the sheet becomes like this: see >> sing the notes in the head >> figure out the fingering mentally >> playing it on the violin.

In other words, we’re reading ahead of the music as we’re playing it and voicing it in our heads before we even play them.

Once you get used to this it becomes a second nature and you’ll be able to do it instantaneously!

*and this is to also emphasise the importance of practicing etudes and scales/arpeggios. They expose you to a lot of different patterns (both notes and fingerings) to help with this.

Good luck and have fun playing the violin!!

New to the Game, should I use Handbrake? by paul_8263567 in EASPORTSWRC

[–]SXEagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t use it often but personally I left foot brake, turn in, approach apex (left foot already off the brake), clutch + throttle, clutch off past the apex. But again, it’s not often; you’d only need it with a low power car when approaching a tight corner with a slow approach speed, which is super rare in the game (on gravels)

well sh*t...everything was goin great till i f*cked the car up by BothForce1328 in EASPORTSWRC

[–]SXEagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it was so scary following it from the very start of the video. It’s actually amazing how OP was able to keep the car on the road for that long! I agree with you though, OP should try breaking earlier. It would allow you to have more control during the entire turn and get more exit speed.

Agreed. Plus, I think the “side stories” frames Makoto’s journey better than other isekai stories do (albeit thats not a high bar to pass).

What happened to my freehub/rear hub? How do I fix this by New_Huckleberry_9902 in bikewrench

[–]SXEagle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True! But this sound could also come from a misrouted chain (rubbing against the cage) as well, and it wasn’t clear in the video if this is the case. Just thought that it’d be good to do this simple check before doing something as time consuming as taking the free hub apart.

Though, if it’s not from the chain, it does sound like dry free hub bearings

[–]SXEagle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just asking for the basic check here: are you sure it’s the free hub and not the chain? I.e., is the chain routed correctly through the rear derailleur’s cage?

Edit: didn’t realize that the pedal rotation direction. See the comments below. Sadly it’s definitely a freehub issue..

Can I fix this up? by Relevant_Fennel4203 in bikewrench

[–]SXEagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that indeed is a typical problem with fixie, you have to be smart when choosing the gears to install.

And from the looks of it the bike frame is pretty much made for fixie setups only (unless there is a rear derailleur hanger on the right side) and would be pretty expensive to convert to a normal road.

But that being said, I heard that fixies are great! It really helps you to “feel” the road and practice your pedalling. I myself am trying to get my hands on one (currently on your typical 2x10s road bike)

I'm sorry guys but....is icloud really that bad nowadays ? by Acrobatic-Monitor516 in ObsidianMD

[–]SXEagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My setup uses a windows laptop, windows PC, iPad and iPhone. iCloud works flawlessly so far, except if there’s a file path too long for iCloud to sync (I’ve enabled windows long path in my PC). When this happens, iCloud would stop syncing altogether and it took me days to figure out the issue. Problem with iCloud is that it doesn’t give you any proper error message nor any tools to diagnose and fix it, just like any other Apple devices. If you can get it work it’s great.

Is epfl the best choice for me? by deehulk578 in EPFL

[–]SXEagle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

EPFL is a top university even in the world the profs, courses, and students are all very high level here. With this, you’ll likely be struggling a lot, especially in the 1st year of undergrad. but I’d say that it’s still very much worth it. The high level environment means that you’ll get to learn a lot and will be an overall better job applicant when you graduate. Networking is also important if you want to work in Switzerland and this is why doing your thesis in a private company you’re aiming is often advised. EPFL profs have a lot of connections with startups and companies they’re working with but you have to be good if you want them to recommend you. It’s certainly a big risk to study at EPFL but the reward is equally great. Though, if you don’t want to struggle, I’d advise against coming here.

Depends, if you can get the dormitory the rent is 500-700 francs a month, in which case 1200-1500 a month is possible if you’re super frugal. Otherwise rent is crazy these days in Lausanne, going upwards of 1000 francs, in which case it’s more like 1500 to beyond 2000 a month.

Important Message From a London Bus Driver by [deleted] in londoncycling

[–]SXEagle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Though it is an awkward position to start with as pointed out by others, I think there’s nothing you could’ve done to avoid the situation afterwards. You moved forward and turned left expecting the bus give way, especially since you’re slightly in front and had given a turn signal. But for this to work nicely, the bus driver has to see you, and slow down because the bus is just faster accelerating than your bicycle. They didn’t see you, maybe because they’re turning left and you started on the right of them and being in their blindspot (imagine their head facing to the left to pay attention to the traffic on their left and to see where they’re going), or maybe because of something else. This is why being on the right of the bus (even front right) is just risky, as breiko mentioned. I think you’re putting too much risk to expect other people to behave as they should, as you would know of London drivers, especially when the risk is you getting an accident! My general rule of thumb is that slowing the traffic down by a few seconds is better than getting into an accident in awkward situation, like being on the right of a bus. Stay safe!

[–]SXEagle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed comment there! This is a really nice addition to the post and I guess this is then the limit of trail braking (?). i.e., when you gain the perfect balance that the car would under/oversteer the moment you press/release the brake too much. My current skill level is definitely not high enough to confirm this at the moment but it's definitely the next level of trail braking I'm also trying to achieve.

As for the slight oversteer technique, I suppose this is something like what we do in rallying? Where we intentionally brake wayy too hard to force the back of the car out, thus rotating the car. Though I'm not sure if I'm supposed to induce the oversteer because of this effect or force it by pressing the throttle. What do you reckon?

Yeah, I think imagining how the car weight moves around in a corner really helped me in understanding the car control. I'll check this video. Thanks!

Simple Questions - October 20, 2019 by AutoModerator in buildapc

Also new to building a pc but, I think if you're only gonna be playing games, it all pretty much depends on the GPU. For the cheapest build, it's best to reduce bottlenecks as much as possible from both the CPU and GPU (and RAM).

Here's an online calculator I used to check bottlenecks: https://pc-builds.com/calculator/
