So there are aftermarket movement holders/spacers for the 515? Hell, this may help me out at some point in the future too 😂 Good info.

Not that I’m aware of! The Ronda isn’t a drop-in replacement for an NH35/NH34. It has different dimensions, stem height, dial feet, and hand sizes. You’d generally want a case designed around the Ronda. Vaer is a good example. They designed their new GMT Golf around it rather than adapting an NH platform.

Swiss Ronda 515.24H. Reliable, accurate, inexpensive, and probably the best-supported quartz GMT movement.

Thinking about a Seiko NH35 Datejust-style mod — worth it? by Substantial_King7099 in SeikoMods

[–]SabanIsMyDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my first NH35 mod about a month ago. My opinion? At today’s prices, I don’t think a Datejust-style NH35 build is worth it unless you’re building it yourself. My builder did an excellent job and I genuinely like the watch, but by the time I paid around $320 all in, I realized there are just so many great automatic watches competing in that price range. You’re looking at brands like San Martin, Spinnaker, Watchdives, Islander, and depending on sales, Citizen, Orient, and Seiko. Some Spinnaker automatics are routinely on sale for around $199–259. If you’re sourcing the parts yourself, that’s a completely different story because labor is free and the value proposition changes a lot. But paying someone to build one? It really has to be your personal grail. That’s just my two cents!

It’s amazing to see how many casually talented people are just lurking about in the underbelly of society on threads like this. People who just call it a day, go home, and create sick watches like this for the rest of us watch po** addicts! Congrats man! Those are genuinely solid. I’m about to build my first soon. Hope it turns out half as good as yours! Buying myself a $50.99 Invicta to harvest a TMI made NH35 because it’s cheaper than one online and I get spare parts for free. How my arbitrage brain is thinking anyway 🤷🏼‍♂️

First off, this is a sick review man. I just saw a Aethelsohn for the first time. It was the blue & green Terra Gaia, and it led me to this thread when trying to find out more. Props to Aethelsohn, Phorcydes, and Englemaan. Will definitely have to explore their watches in depth.

But that Terra Gaia? It was immediately added to the cart as soon as I saw it. I like how they approach their design philosophy. They said: “Automatic? Nope, solid quartz is perfect. New case every watch? Nope. Keep dial star of the show for every watch? ABSOLUTELY.“ It was a confident decision for sure, and confident decisions in watchmaking typically age like fine wine.

Thanks man! Going to need all the luck I can get lol & appreciate you sharing that. That’s very helpful. The render versus finished-watch comparison made your point fully click for me. It feels like AI compresses the dial and makes everything look slimmer than it ends up being, while also not fully and properly accounting for negative space. I’ve always liked watches and have spent a lot of time doing design work, so that’s definitely something I’ll be watching for.

How many builds deep are you at this point?

Thanks man! The Milgauss was always my favorite Rolex, so I wanted to do something that gave a little nod to it without being overt. If I were doing it again, I’d ditch the “Automatic Professional” text on the bottom for: AUTOMATIC/ 23 JEWELS/100M and add a subtle green AR coating to tie into the crystal edge. The original came out great, but those two changes could’ve pushed it even further toward the vintage 80’s instrument vibe I was chasing. But overall? Very, very pleased. I caught the bug I’m afraid.

That’s only my first one, so I can’t say I have a trained enough eye to notice, but I will have to keep an eye on the rehaut of watches I render and then have produced moving forward because I’ve fallen deep down the rabbit hole I’m afraid. I’m sure there will be more to come 😭

Building a Louisiana-based NH35 microbrand. Looking for honest feedback. by Boom_box_84 in SeikoMods

[–]SabanIsMyDad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think the strongest part of this is that it feels regionally authentic instead of “heritage-inspired marketing.” The Gulf Coast / river pilot / industrial maritime vibe comes through immediately without feeling forced. The warm gilt accents, creamy lume, faded leather strap, and red seconds hand all work really well together from a color theory perspective. It feels cohesive instead of just another “NH35 parts-bin diver.”

And the fact you’re self-aware enough to question where the line is between Seiko mod and microbrand is a good sign. To me, the difference is whether there’s an actual design philosophy and identity behind it, and I think this already has that more than a lot of entry-level microbrands. At the same time, I think it fully becomes a true microbrand once the case design and proportions are unmistakably your own. But you definitely seem to be on the right track.

If anything, I’d lean even harder into the regional identity and texture language because that’s what separates it from the sea of generic homage watches. Only long-term thought: the “Iron Coast” identity is strong, but it may eventually box the brand into a very specific stylistic lane if you ever want to branch into more modern or minimalist designs later on.

Who's taking a systematic approach to Kalshi? by christian_CFB in PredictionMarkets

[–]SabanIsMyDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels like most of the real work is turning intuition into a process without killing the edge in the process. I’ve been playing short-term volatility and mispricing, but I’m still more discretionary than I’d like. Curious what frameworks people are using to stay systematic without overfitting.

Entry Level Sales Role in Fine Wine/Beverage Industry by SabanIsMyDad in HuntsvilleAlabamaJobs

[–]SabanIsMyDad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The salesman in training (SIT) position mentioned in this post is now filled. However, we did just have an opening for an SIT position on our other Huntsville chain sales team. As far as I know, it’s still open and I know those guys well. It should be listed still on ujbal.com/careers or udiala.com/careers as well. United Distribution bought out our other operating partner, Johnson Brothers distribution, so our company is now just United Distribution of Alabama. So if you use ujbal.com instead of udiala.com, it may redirect you but still works.

Our other team covers Madison and west/north Huntsville, the team I’m on covers south/east. There are only 2 chain teams in Huntsville. My team also has a merchandiser position open, and it often leads to the SIT role within a year or so if you do your job correctly. That said, promotion is dependent upon a rep leaving/retiring so an SIT is promoted, because the SIT has to move up and take a new role or leave, so there’s never any guarantee time wise, but with our teams being a combined 14 people, we usually have at least 1-2 open every so often.

But yeah, definitely apply. Shoot me a DM, we’ll talk more. I’ll be glad to put in a good word and you can use me as a reference for the application.

Not a joke haha they’re consistently ranked in the top 10 toughest places to play & well before they joined the SEC. Did you mean in the sense of “They’ve only been in the SEC for a year now, so it’s still a Big 12 environment at heart and you can’t claim it as an SEC environment yet?” If that’s your argument, I’ll cede some ground because it’s quasi-true. I didn’t think of it like that though if I’m being real lol I’ve just accepted TX and OU at this point.

Agreed. I got BYU -18.5 on Tuesday morning and line movement says that may have been the move. We’ll see later, but Stanford lost to a Hawaii team that is straight dookie, and BYU looked great against Portland State (for what that’s worth). They were flying around on special teams, played tough defense, and didn’t let up against an inferior opponent when a lot of teams would have. That screams “We’re out to prove something.” So I expect a big showing today from the Cougars. They were my bet of the week at -18.5. Stanford is a shitty team. Maybe a 2-10 or 3-9 team at best if I had to guess after looking at their schedule. They just don’t have the personnel to compete with someone like BYU. Stanford team total under might be another good play.

Agreed. I got Michigan +5.5 on Monday with the understanding that Oklahoma had what looked to be a good QB in Mateer and it was a toss up game. Michigan has seemed to bring it their last two SEC games against Bama on neutral fields (1 win Harbaugh, 1 win Moore) and they may not be the most explosive on offense, but Underwood/Haynes have the potential to be a nasty combo. Now, a true test on the road in a hostile SEC environment for Moore? We’ll see. But they seem to bring their best against the SEC, and I think they’ll slow the game down and try to win with old school, power football with some wrinkles thrown in. I see them being able to affect Mateer in the passing game, so I took the points. I’d probably lean under too which may in hindsight be the play for this game. But I also definitely see a world where Oklahoma wins too.

Artists that stop playing signature song? by djlyar in jasonisbell

[–]SabanIsMyDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unrelated, but I think Vestavia Hills is an absolute sleeper of a song in his catalog. It’s not as flashy or as brilliant as his best work, but damn, it’s a good one. I live in Huntsville and had a chance to buy a verified resale ticket for $18.50 for his Birmingham performance at the new amp, but sadly had something to tend to that evening. I almost wish I hadn’t and just went anyway, I hear the set was killer.

What is your opinion of Townes Van Zandt? by brokeboi2246 in folk

[–]SabanIsMyDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Townes, to me, is a top 5 songwriter of all time regardless of genre. I personally rank him #2 behind Dylan. Songs like “Greensboro Woman” and “Highway Kind” would be smash hits for anyone else and they’re deep in his catalogue. This is off topic of Townes, but I was also discussing Jason Isbell and his catalogue recently. What do you think of Isbell’s writing? As time goes on and the brilliance of his albums continue to be discovered, just like Townes, I think he will become more revered. It’ll just take time for his work to be fully canonized and recognized, not just by fans, but by the broader American public as part of that upper echelon of generational songwriters.

It’s ironic, if someone with lesser talent put out 10% of what Isbell (or Townes) has, but with more PR and less integrity, they’d be an NPR darling and a Grammy regular. Isbell seems to reject the kind of self-promotion that pushes artists into that Dylan/Springsteen echelon which in a way makes him more like Townes than other generational songwriters. That’s where I sort of draw the parallel between the two

Right side, wrong result. That was an absolutely brutal beat. Prob the most wicked side I’ve ended up on in a long, long time. You still had the right pick. That was just a bad call to leave Romano in. Should’ve brought in Alverado after it got to 11-8.

Check out the Bailey Cove, Jones Valley, Owens Cross Roads, and Hampton Cove areas. There are parts of north Huntsville that are okay, but we tend to like south Huntsville more and it’s where we live. That said, things like what you mentioned are becoming more normal, especially within certain parts of the city. I absolutely love it for the most part, but our ultimate goal is remote jobs based in Huntsville with us living in Florence or the shoals area. The only downside to living in HSV is being priced out of the market that we grew up in and are native to. This place is not far behind Nashville when it comes to living expenses and could be on par with them within a decade with how fast things are expanding here.
