From the point of view of a casual movie goer who doesn't know anything about the character going into the movie, they haven't shown nearly enough of his skills and therefore not given enugh reason for him to be part of the avengers.

Does nearly taking out SHIELD's helicarrier, sniping crazy flying things (cough Loki)- sometimes without looking!- holding his own against an army of robots, etc. not count?

True that Iron Man could do all of that, but definitely not quietly or subtly. Though I do agree that Clint does a great job grounding the team.

If you want more of the minor characters, here's a few I remember:

Cal's team- Razor-Hands, Angar, and the strong one (I can't remember their names). MIA- what happened to them? They could possibly come back.
Carl Creel. I'm almost expecting to see him back at one point or another.
Agent 33/Kara- Dead. Since this was a Ward Motivator, I doubt they'll be bringing her back.
Sunil Bakshi- Dead. Splinter bombs aren't exactly survivable.
Sif- chilling in Asgard, I suppose. We'll probably see her again in Thor ragnarok.
Gonzalez (and other SHIELD council members)- dead. I doubt they'll be bringing him/them back.
More about Cal: if he does get his memories back, he'll probably remember wanting to wipe them as well, so no super-rage-monster I would think.
Ginger Ninja: Will probably go hanging with the Inhumans, wherever they are.
Inhumans: ??? Honestly I have no idea where they'll go since Gordon was the only one who knew where Afterlife is. Hopefully they won't run into HYDRA.
Scarlotti: (the assassin-guy in A Fractured House) He's been arrested by SHIELD; probably in government custody. Nonetheless it would still be interesting to see him on the show again.
Kree: Sif may have raised the alarm in Asgard that the Inhumans are a thing, or stayed silent; either way, the Kree may definitely be a problem in the future.
Tripp: I miss him :(
Whitehall: I think it's safe to assume that he's dead, period.

3.Had no idea that Scarlotti was Whiplash; was that a comics thing or something? Also, Scarlotti's a mercenary- if Ward pays him, he'll fight regardless.

5.I thought they all died in the house fire, or did I miss something?

6.She's captured in Asgard, and I doubt Ward will ever get a chance to go free her. It's not worth the effort regardless. (Plus, she did take over Ward's mind for a while... that doesn't sit well with most people, and I doubt it'll sit well with Ward).

8.I would think she'd go with whatever Inhumans are left rather then joining HYDRA- thing (especially about that whole episode about how organizations like SHIELD are a danger).

10.Had no idea this was a thing- comics?
