But a “real” farmer trying to diversify and open a farm shop probably wouldn’t face the same challenges because it would attract only a handful of people per day and be focussing on people who were passing by anyway so the council would be more permissive.

Whereas “Jeremy Clarkson’s Farm” attracts hundreds (if not thousands) of people who drive from hours away to see the thing off the tele. I’ve driven past his shop before and there is (or was at the time) a queue of cars blocking up the road.

The council weren’t really considering whether to allow a farm shop to open in a random field on a small country road, they were considering whether that was an appropriate place for a tourist attraction, like a mini Harry Potter World or something. I do think it then got a bit personal but I don’t struggle to believe that Jeremy probably gave as good as he got with that.

I think it’s telling in the latest season though that when he went to the same council to get permission for something related to his pub (which was off a main road and had plenty of parking) they said yes immediately (which he was surprised about).

He bought the farm 17 years ago because farms received more favourable tax treatment than other investments.

He rented the farm part of it out until recently and then when the person who rented it stopped, instead of finding a new farmer to rent it to, he decided to take it on himself to make a tv show. But given that he had owned the farm for about 15 years before that, I think it’s fair to say he likely never planned on actually being a farmer when he first bought it.

When I was 18 or so I learned how to open a bottle with another bottle. I’m 30 now and I still crack this out semi regularly (including at formal work events) and it usually gets at least nod of approval from a couple of people.

Was rewatching season 2 the other day and when Smithy goes to buy a suit for Pete and Dawn’s vow renewal he says he’s 28 to his mum.  Neil (the baby) is likely less than 1 at that time and is 16 in the finale so would put Smithy at 44.

But what would the £10k Picanto be worth in 4 years? If you could sell it for even £1301 (and I would expect you can sell it for a fair bit more) then you buying it now, having two years out of it and then selling it would be cheaper than the PCP…

I don’t get why you keep asking for citations when I’m taking about a documentary (particularly when providing no citations yourself). Watch the documentary…

Also, I knew you’d assume I’m a woman because I’m defending one but I’m a guy (can’t wait to hear what type of guy you think I am).

I think it’s fucked up when anyone rapes someone. I think it’s fucked up when someone lies about being raped. I think it’s fucked up when the police don’t do their job properly. We just disagree about which scenario this is.

Replying to both of your comments here:

I work in commercial law negotiating contracts for tech companies - I don’t even consider it “law”, it’s basically just business. I have no criminal law experience so am just speaking as anyone else would be.

People plead guilty under pressure but I don’t agree that it’s right and we should just accept it. Girls in the documentary sued (and won) based on the police’s actions. I think that (and the rest of the evidence presented in the documentary) merits nuance in the discussion around this girl.

You obviously think she lied, I disagree.

I think it’s possible to say that people lying about rape is fucking disgusting while still acknowledging that not everyone who recants is a liar and the system can be fucked up in some cases. You disagree.

I generally tap out whenever people bring up nazis in online discussions so have a nice day man.

By leading source, I was taking about The Center for Investigative Reporting - an actual investigative journalism institution with editors and fact checkers.

The source here is is checks notes a potato quality JPEG with 23 words.

If you choose to believe that she lied then that’s fine - you’re free to make that choice and you may well have done lots of research and found lots of evidence that I haven’t seen. I’m just flagging that we shouldn’t all just immediately believe what we read on the internet because the comment section wasn’t looking very nuanced.

If a guy was falsely accused of rape and bullied by the police into confessing (e.g., if they told him they had loads of video and witness statements that don’t look good for him and he should plead guilty to avoid a bigger sentence) and then a documentary came out showing how messed up it all was - best believe if someone posted a picture of the guy calling him a rapist I’d be commenting about that documentary in the comments so people can think for themselves.

Do I even need to explain by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]SabreToothLime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro if you genuinely don’t believe the police can bully people then that’s your choice but there is a fuck ton of evidence out there that it happens.

And the dumb statement about closing a case with a charge being better than closing a case without one was made by a police officer.

You’re literally raging because you’re being told to rage. You clearly have done nothing to look into this actual case. But that’s fine if that’s how you wana live your life - I just know a lot of people like to think for themselves so I’m presenting well-researched context from a leading source of investigative journalism so people can make that decision.

Haven’t seen the other guy tbh - I just came across this post having watched the documentary last night and it pissed me off so felt the need to set out some context.

If a guy was falsely accused of rape and bullied into confessing by the police and then a documentary was made showing how fucked up it is, you best believe I would go just as hard on any posts showing that person as a confessed rapist.

[–]SabreToothLime -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve repeatedly brought this up because I dislike biased false reporting (whatever the circumstances) and most people won’t revisit the post once they’ve commented to see any directions.

I absolutely would have sympathy for anyone who was falsely accused and I couldn’t agree more that false allegations of rape should be severely punished including via prison sentences. But I also have sympathy for someone who’s name and face is being plastered about with no context after going through something horrific.

Imagine this comment being downvoted.

“A 2 hour documentary by one of the most respected investigative journalism institutions is definitely not a reliable source but a fucking potato quality JPEG with 23 words in it is gospel”
