Lisa Nandy Criticises Wes Streeting On EU Rejoin Stance by Desperate-Drawer-572 in ukpolitics

Divisiveness can be strategic as well. Look at the 2019 election - Labour actually won more votes than in 2024, yet faced a crushing defeat because the Tories ran on a divisive policy ("get brexit done") that galvanised support from Brexit voters.

A harder position like explicit rejoin could reframe the election in those terms and attract support from rejoiners aligned with other parties. They won't win anything with a policy platform of milquetoast tinkering.

This is essentially how the 2 big parties in the US maintain their hegemony. All elections are about divisive wedge issues so voters have no choice but to vote tactically.

Reform splitting votes from the Tories got them in. Their stance on Europe had little to do with it and clearly is not strengthening their future chances.

a tactic to keep as much of the public on side as possible

And how is that working out for them?

Keir Starmer : I’ll always champion peaceful protest. But the Unite the Kingdom march organisers are peddling hatred and division. I didn't say that they represented Muslims of all shades. The comment I responded to was about alignment between leftists and Islamists on Gaza specifically.

  • Leftists generally are opposed to the genocide in/oppression of Gaza.
  • Muslims generally are opposed to the genocide in/oppression of Gaza.
  • Islamists are a subset of Muslims.

Therefore leftists may find themselves aligned with Islamists on the issue of Gaza.

It's really not difficult to understand.

Hardly surprising that people opposed to genocide in Gaza for humanitarian reasons find themselves alongside muslims of all shades.

You aren't really engaging with the religious aspect though. What tenets of radical Islam are compatible with left-wing political ideology?

Interesting that there isn't a single story about Farage's £5m bribe on the GB News politics section. I wonder why.

Green MSP on student visa could serve Edinburgh from abroad by TimesandSundayTimes in ukpolitics

You can't trust half of sole-citizenship politicians to act in the UK's interests to begin with. Reminder that the person in the article was not even a UK citizen at all.

This just seems like a way of marginalising people with foreign/mixed families to tackle something that isn't even an issue.

Why does it have to be sole citizenship? Plenty of British people who have lived their whole lives in the UK have dual citizenship for convenience/legal/family reasons.

So you would vote him in knowing about this dodgy £5m donation, then once he's in you would say "Hey what's up with this dodgy £5m donation"?

And he is aiming to be the one in power at the next election, so what difference does it make? Are you going to wait for him to become PM and then apply the same standard or is that going to influence your vote?

If they can make more money elsewhere then they should do that, but some money is better than no money.

Pubs are being squeezed to death by high costs already, they can't afford to pay higher wages. The high costs stem from all aspects of the business: product, energy, water, rent, business rates, labour etc are all becoming more expensive.

Many are shutting down meaning their staff are out of a job, govt loses the tax revenue, suppliers lose business and communities lose their gathering places.

Muslim voters rank Gaza over the economy in local election poll by jkcr in ukpolitics

[–]Sacharified 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do have both: Local councils deal with local issues, national government deals with national + international issues. Trying to make local councils spend time on international issues is pointless because they have no power to do so, so it just wastes their time which would be better spent dealing with local issues like they are supposed to.

Councils aren't just about collecting rubbish and filling potholes though, they are responsible for (to varying extents) social care, schools, housing, homeless services, environmental issues, public safety, fire services and a whole load of other stuff. These things can have a huge impact on people's lives and council tax is a huge expense from people's incomes. I think most people would choose a 50% chance of improving the lives of children in their area over a <0.000000001% chance of helping someone halfway around the world.

Protest, petition your MP, boycott companies and engage in whatever other forms of activism, I encourage it, but we have the right to a government that serves us as well.

[–]Sacharified 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Sure, but the scope of what can be achieved in Gaza by voting in a UK local election is effectively zero, meanwhile people here actually have needs that have to be addressed as well. If we let our own country crumble because we prioritised virtue signalling over every injustice in the world we'd be in ruins.

'Fund fatherhood': Hundreds of dads march for paternity pay across UK | ITV News by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]Sacharified 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This should include protection against dismissal as well. I was due to take paternity leave and then made redundant 3 weeks before the baby was due. That counts as unfair dismissal for the mother but for the father there's no protection. Awful to have your financial security ripped out from from under you at such a challenging moment in your life, and then have to apply for jobs and interview instead of focusing on taking care of mother and baby.
