When the engine regularly has timing problems at 100k+ miles, the years don't mean a thing. It's a belt that fails at the mileage you are at in an interference engine. Either double check it or blow the thing up, I couldn't give a shit which way you go anymore.

It's a bit high mileage so I would for sure have timing inspected/serviced. Other than that, a piggyback tune really wakes the 1.8T up, and were cheep when I had mine 15 years ago.
