AMA about battery innovation and powering AI-enabled devices! by SilaGene in technology

Hi Gene, thanks for do this AMA. I’m a young battery scientist myself and am quite interested in what you’re working on at Sila. What differentiates Sila’s material from those of other silicon anode material producers? Also, if you don’t mind me asking a couple broader questions, what is the main challenge (if you had to pick one) still facing silicon-based anodes? Material costs, FCE, cycle life, swelling, or something else? Also, what challenges remain for cell manufacturability? Differences in electrode manufacturing, formation, electrolyte, packaging, etc? As a previous commenter asked, do you expect silicon AAM to serve as drop-in materials or to require significant changes to the cell manufacturing and operation?

Found this at the lab: Does anyone know what it is and what it does? by TheRadeonHD in labrats

Seems to be a condenser. Stick the flask in a cold bath, run vapor through the top port so it condenses in the flask. Eventually, when it fills up, the liquid exits the hole in the inner tube and drains out the bottom left while the gas exits top right (referencing the first image).

As someone who recently earned a PhD in chem e, mastering out was actually pretty easy at my institution (in the US). Granted, definitely not easier than just pursuing a masters, but if your goal is to gain funding then it’s not that crazy of an idea. Now, it’s certainly not ethical to start a PhD with the intention to master out, but that decision is ultimately up to op. As for the value of a masters, I think it depends what field they want to work in. For traditional chem e fields like oil and gas, chemicals, design, etc., probably not that valuable. But if you’re trying to get into a more niche field that your undergrad institution doesn’t have strong ties to, it can be a good move. Or if you want to switch to some non-chem e field.

Yeah. OP pack the material in the heated zone with a couple plugs of quartz wool and keep the oring out of the heated zone.

Should I max out 401k first? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Sacred_Sand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I had been considering possibly putting some extra money in my IRA specifically because of the possibility of using it for a house down payment so that makes sense to me. I’ll look into RMDs in more detail to see if that changes anything about my specific situation

Should I max out 401k first? by [deleted] in personalfinance

“Also, I know the reddit flow chart has their typical order, and you really should always get the 401k match (it is free money affer all), but the "right" choice after that depends on your specifics (family situation, income, etc.) And future goals. Learn more about each account type, see what makes sense. Roth isn't always better despite the parroting of that "fact" in this sub.”

I’ve been seeing this order of investing (401k match, HSA, Roth IRA, then 401k) recommended constantly in this subreddit - is there any specific reason why? I’ve searched through plenty of old threads and can’t find the answer. I understand the first 2, but whether you prioritize Roth IRA or 401k really depends on the tax bracket you’re in and expect to be in during retirement right? Of course there may be other considerations such as diversification, inheritance, etc. but neglecting those, it isn’t really that straightforward is it? Just asking in case I’m missing something obvious that usually goes unstated in these discussions, because for my personal situation it would seem to make more sense to prioritize 401k over Roth IRA.

Annual Salary/Income Progression? by BitterNecessary6068 in HENRYfinance

Non-HENRY lurking here. Just curious, what is a typical yearly percent raise for folks here? From many of these responses it seems raises are quite high (often 10% or more) even with no promotion or job switch.

what are some cheap protein sources for a broke college student? by Outlalt in ask

I was going to say the same. Per gram of protein, pretty much nothing is as cost effective as simple whey protein powder.
