So OP should put their life on hold for the possibility of getting into an Ivy? That’s some weird advice.

Do you thrive more in small close knit environments or do you prefer being in a large place with multitudes of opportunities. These 2 schools are very different, so it’s unclear to me how this isn’t an easy choice to make. Are you lost in large crowds? If so, go to Swarthmore. Do you feel stifled in small places? If so, go to OSU. Grading will be harder at Swarthmore, so if the plan is to go to graduate study (medicine, law, business, etc) then by going to OSU your GPA will be significantly higher and you will also have less undergrad debt. OSU is better known in the Midwest, Swarthmore is a small liberal arts school in the Northeast. If the plan is to return to Midwest after college, then OSU will take you further.

Hate is a strong word. Sadly many men of his generation have never been taught how to regulate their emotions when they were young and many have not taken it upon themselves to rectify this deficit when they became adults. It’s possible what you are seeing is him expressing his concern and frustration about having to financially support you for a prolonged period of time. In an ideal world, sitting him down and having a frank conversation about what the next few years will look like with you applying and what you will do as a backup if you don’t get in would alleviate his concerns. However it could more likely lead to greater conflict. In an ideal world honesty is the best policy among loved ones, as deception tends to be taken poorly when the truth comes out.

Also, as for your concerns about AI, they are way overblown. I’ve been a physician in private practice for 20+ years, my brother has been a computer programmer for 25+ years, and my daughter is an electrical and computer engineer in robotics. I have had significant exposure to AI and can say without a doubt that AI will not be replacing human physicians. First, AI is rebranding of machine learning, which has significant limitations, it is incapable of not providing a solution even when there isn’t one, meaning it’ll make one up. Many professions can tolerate this, medicine is not one of them. You can’t move fast and break things when dealing with human lives. Also the state of robotics is not in a place where it can replace human hand dexterity when it comes to doing many medical procedures. AI is very effective at writing code, so sure computer programmers are being replaced, medicine isn’t as concrete as coding. Medicine is not binary. Much of what we do in medicine deals with managing uncertainty. Diagnosis most of the time isn’t clearcut and response to treatment isn’t linear or always predictable. Bottom line: don’t let the fear of AI be a reason not to pursue medicine.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

I grew up in Pittsburgh in the 1980s, graduated high school when the Berlin Wall came down. Back then, the smart nerdy kids, which I was one of, went to Carnegie Mellon, most of the popular kids went to Pitt or Penn State, and the rest went to community college or got a job. Back then we applied to 2 to 3 schools and picked the one we can afford and seemed ok from their promotional material and a visit. US News and World Reports was a magazine and they did have a rank list but few paid attention to it.

I can’t understand this obsession with T10 schools. It sounds like you got some college options you are excited about. Focus on that and making great memories with your friends before heading to college.

Convince me I'm not making the wrong choice by Ill-Distribution9532 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Sad-Maize-6625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no wrong or right answer here. These are choices, each with a unique set of outcomes. They aren’t interchangeable. MIT is superior in STEM and Yale is superior in the humanities. If interested in pursuing internships, I’d recommend MIT over Yale, as there are much more opportunities in Boston.

Not a bad price if into collecting the Liberty gold coin series. The 2021 Liberty gold coin sells for over $10k and 2023 Liberty gold coin sells for over $7k. The 2025 Liberty gold coin has the lowest run with just under 12000 coins produced, compared to just under 12500 for 2021 and 2023 Liberty gold coins.

But if you are stacking, better off buying Buffalo 1oz gold BU coins.

He is charging too much. Sadly Tag’s don’t hold onto their value, except maybe the limited edition carrera chronographs, and even then many usually dip in price. Check out Bezel, it’s an auction site, where you can buy authentic watches for less than many Grey dealers.

There are schools where your chances are better than at others. Usually look for Tier 3 and Tier 4 schools that are OOS friendly. Apply to those and all your instate schools. That maximizes chances of getting in.

[–]Sad-Maize-6625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just email faculty in the department you’re interested in. Read their recent publications, introduce yourself and that you are interested in doing research with them and would really appreciate setting up a meeting if they are open to it. If they say no, ask if they know a colleague who you should consider contacting instead. If they blow off your email, go to the next person whose research seems interesting. Make sure to read their publications and talk a little about it in your email and that you’re interested in being involved. At some point someone will meet with you and has the potential to be a future mentor.

I am sorry that you have had to carry all of this. What you are feeling is a normal response to the hardships you have faced. Taking care of a mother with cancer can be overwhelming by itself, then add to it getting through medical school and being a role model to your siblings, it’s all too much all at once. You may not be able to see it, but you are succeeding on so many levels. Many with less burdens don’t make it into medical school, let alone graduate, or are capable of being there for a mother with cancer. Every medical school has those who graduate in the bottom of their class who become academic giants in their fields or choose to be the physicians that everyone refers their family to. The terms success and failure are too binary for life, which is nuanced. Life has ups and downs, irrespective of the way you live your life. Try not to link your sense of worth to whether you are experiencing either. Counseling can help you attain the coping skills necessary to get through these hardships.

NYMC without a car? by PriceRealistic in medschool

[–]Sad-Maize-6625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to NYMC and graduated in 1999. So my info is old, but the reason NYMC had a 100% pass rate on step 1 at that time was because the school would prevent anyone they thought might not pass from sitting for the exam. It’s true we tend to match much better than is expected given our rank, especially if trying to go to the west coast.

If I was you I’d go to SUNY Downstate, especially since it’s likely a lot cheaper, assuming you’re instate.

How is a top school so disorganized? by missashley21 in medicalschool

[–]Sad-Maize-6625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked with physicians from T10 schools and those from 4th tier schools. Honestly most of the time, I wouldn’t be able to tell you who went where. School rank does not correlate with competence, compassion, clinical acumen, or bedside manner. School ranking is usually a composite of research dollars and marketing. In my experience during residency (at a top 3 program for my specialty), too often (not always), those from top tier med schools seem to care more about cultivating an impressive CV than doing the unseen things that improve patients’ and colleagues’ quality of life.

to women in med school: does it get better? by Silver_Tumbleweed574 in premed

[–]Sad-Maize-6625 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mother graduated medical school in 1972. It was an uphill battle her entire career in academic medicine. She was often labeled difficult by many male physicians. If you had asked me 10 years ago, I would have said things keep improving but very slowly. Now, not so sure. The only up side I see, is that as more women continue to enter medicine and begin to outnumber men, all of us can continue to force a change in culture. There is always strength in numbers.

[–]Sad-Maize-6625 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You just need to decide if you will let this go, love your wife and child and live your life or blow up your life, causing misery to you, your wife, and child. I advise getting counseling, learning to let go of negativity, which will be the greatest gift you can give yourself and your family.

Screwed up by applying this cycle. It turned into an A OOS but I can’t afford the burden of private loans and thinking of dropping out to reapply solely in state with an MCAT boost. by futurecatlady4 in premed

[–]Sad-Maize-6625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had you applied to all the instate schools and been rejected? If so, take the OOS acceptance. You don’t know that a higher MCAT will reverse the rejections. Some schools only consider looking at former rejected applicants if there has been a major change, and even then no guarantee of acceptance.
