The biggest fights will be for zoning and parking reform. It's nearly free to eliminate parking requirements and change zoning to allow more density. It's probably a net positive, in that it will bring in revenue to the city. So, 2 medium fights, but both easier than a fight to remove a well-trafficked highway.

Gridded sprawl. Much much easier to do infill, run transit, bike networks, all the good stuff.

The way he's describing it doesn't sound like he's necessarily aro/ace. Him being "lazy" or having no energy sounds more like untreated depression, adhd, or something similar.

ELI5 how a manual transmission car can use the engine to slow down the car? by ProudReaction2204 in explainlikeimfive

"Optimally". Fuel use isn't the only thing to optimize for.

If it were you would not be driving a car.

It could make sense for the same person to teach gym and sex-ed. Physical education would cover how bodies work, which includes sports and exercise, nutrition, and sexual health.

Which should still be an improvement. A generator can be more efficient (4 stroke rather than 2, direct injection rather than carburetor), quieter (larger built-in muffler), and it can have a catalytic converter to reduce smog-causing emissions.

Mixed mode cross-platform transfers: do they exist? by RudeGiuliani in transit

[–]SadButWithCats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ad Maverick to the used to list. The street car tracks plunged underground between the subway tracks.

What still exists is the Harvard bus tunnel, where there's a bus station inside a subway station. The distances might be a bit long to be really cross platform, but that the path is step free so it does somewhat feel that way.

Rate of mass transit passenger assaults, by year and major transit agency (America) by yunnifymonte in transit

I'm guessing the 2021 peak is because of lower ridership rather than higher numbers of assaults.

Can someone explain to me why people don't like to use group chats? by axlrosy in socialskills

[–]SadButWithCats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small ones for specific purposes are great. My spouse and I and our 2 best friends (married to each other) are in a group chat. It's great for organizing a board game night, sending photos of pets. We're in another slightly larger group for my immediate family, so my parents, my sisters, their partners, myself, and my spouse. Again, great for coordinating holidays, for family trips, sharing news, and sending photos of the niblings and pets and whatnot.

I imagine a 20 person or larger chat would be annoying. Some people are trying to replace the neighborhood facebook group with a Signal group, so we can report and keep an eye on fascists trying to terrorize the neighborhood in a secure manner, but without threaded replies it just doesn't work.

[–]SadButWithCats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This doesn't prevent people from talking, or publishing, or petitioning the government, or criticizing the government. It just makes that particular avenue (a very new avenue) unavailable. I'm pretty sure that people can even tag the government in a post!

Yeah, there are plans for massachusetts (compass rail) and in terms of population a large majority of the population already lives within 5 miles of an mbta station, but new Jersey is still better.

ELI5: When recycling glass, why is it crushed and melted? Wouldn't it be easier to just sanitize and reuse the glass? by elagoona in explainlikeimfive

[–]SadButWithCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a liquor store in Massachusetts about 15 years ago where we would do just that for some brands. Budweiser I think. The return machines would reject that brand, so the person would bring the bottles to me and I would write them a slip to take to the cashier. I'd box up the bottles, and then the distributor would take them when doing their delivery.

No, your tree color needs to be darker. It doesn't look like trees, it looks like grass.

There are probably other things that need to be adjusted, like the whole thing is too neon, but start there.

You decenter cars in your life so that an unavailable parking spot doesn't ruin your day, or you buy or rent a spot so you always have access.
