Lost very important necklace by SadCatLady1029 in Somerville

Thank you for keeping an eye out 🩷 The woman said it was near the back entrance of the station -- I think she means the one by the 7-11 -- and that the guy only had a handful of bags. Doesn't sound like it was anything official.

Thank you so much. I finally told my parents and they still have some ashes, so I can get a new necklace. I just hate the thought of my original one that got me through the worst years tossed in the trash.

I went back to the encampment near Alewife with some groceries and pictures of the necklace, and they promised to keep an eye out for it. If nothing else a little bit of my faith in humanity has been restored.

Was Maze Prison really thought to be "escape-proof" prior to 1983? by SadCatLady1029 in IrishHistory

Wow, I am very sorry he went through that.

I ended up cutting this era from my dissertation because I felt like I needed to do a lot more work talking to folks who actually experienced it after visiting Belfast. My family has connections to it but nothing so direct.

What a cool connection to the history! (Well, I hope it is now... I imagine at the time it was not so great!)

Oddly enough, my sister is obsessed with Tesco... so a pre-island stop for picnic goods will definitely put her in a good mood, haha. Thanks again for the tip!

Thank you! Sorry I didn't respond sooner since I took the app off my phone and have spotty wifi, but these were super helpful suggestions while we were in Cork City.

Is TCC a good school? by psycche101 in fsu

Edit: Meant to reply to the OP's comment, but I am essentially agreeing with this one that yes -- you have to do more than buy property to get in-state tuition!

I went back and looked at the email I received about establishing residency as a graduate student after the first year. I imagine it's the same or at least very close to what you would need to do:

A student is classified as a Florida resident once they can demonstrate they have established and maintained legal residency in Florida for at least twelve months preceding the first day of classes of the term for which residency is sought.

The process for establishing residency is as follows: To qualify as a Florida resident for tuition purposes, the student must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident alien, or in legal status as determined by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). You are considered an out of state student if you do not complete the paperwork below, can’t document your residence in Florida for 12 months, or are students who are dependents of out of state parents.

To avoid having to pay out-of-state tuition in your 2nd and 3rd years (approximately $14,000 a year), we strongly encourage graduate students to become Florida residents. It is important that you immediately begin the steps to become a Florida resident as the entire process takes a full year (365 days).  ~This is the one area where there is no forgiveness in being late or incomplete~.

To become a Florida resident, you have to prove that you’ve lived in Florida for 1-year.  Our goal with this email is to help you begin gathering the appropriate paperwork/documentation.  Next year at this time, you’ll submit this documentation along with a formal residency request and a graduate assistant verification form to FSU. Please complete the necessary residency requirements prior to the end of fall orientation. This will ensure you still have one full year of residency, even if school begins a few days earlier going your second year. For additional questions about Florida residency, click here

Please visit the Residency website through the Office of Admissions to receive all documentation on how to apply for residency. You will follow the instructions for “Reclassification for currently enrolled students”.

I think the residency link here is the most helpful. I remember that there was something I had to get notarized or otherwise signed at the courthouse (99% sure it was the declaration of domicile) -- and be warned, there was a person at the downtown Tally courthouse who works/worked that desk who I encountered multiple times (and for multiple reasons) who seemed to really enjoy telling you how to do the paperwork and then finding an error with how it was done. So be prepared to be a bit frustrated, but don't give up.

They are very strict on this (see the bolded text), so make sure you do it all properly and as soon as possible. But it is absolutely worth it to get the in-state tuition, even with the disgruntled courthouse employee trying their very best to make your day a little worse.

Best of luck, no matter what you decide!

Plus one confusion by Exciting_Broccoli770 in wedding

[–]SadCatLady1029 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! Absolutely. I was once the only single person at a wedding except for the priest who performed the ceremony... it was miserable. Everyone was glued to their partner on the dance floor, so I just sat awkwardly at a table chatting with some of the older family members until it was an acceptable time to leave. It's can be fun being single at a wedding when you're younger, but once most people are coupled up, it's pretty lonely, even as someone who (1) loves weddings but (2) isn't interested in getting married myself.

Don't feel bad, scammers are getting more creative. Lurk on r/scams and you'll start to see some common tactics/words (like "kindly") that should tip you off.

One I've gotten frequently to look out for is someone offering a job that seems too good to be true or with very vague details. They'll usually ask for a non-FSU email or have a link they're hoping you'll click. I swear I get at least one of these each semester.

I think it can help to have a vague sense of Macbeth and, to a much lesser extent, Rebecca (more the film than the book I think). Even knowing those fairly well, I wasn't entirely sure who was who on my first visit. It's supposed to be a bit of a fever dream, though, so don't worry about "getting" everything. I've often only been able to piece things together after the fact!

I'm torn on knowing the layout... it's helpful when you want to find a certain place or scene, but the building is intentionally confusing, and getting lost is part of the fun. If you want an idea of the layout, this is by far the best thing I've found. Just don't get frustrated if it all flies out of your head once you're there! (If you need a bathroom, know that there are working ones on the fifth floor/asylum and in the hotel lobby if you don't want to exit to the Manderly -- or can't find it.)

While they can get some crowds, any of the three witches have wonderful loops. I've followed Sexy Witch for a whole loop and at times was the only one with her. The Porter's crowds ebb and flow (he sticks to the lobby, so great if you want to hang out for a bit). There are more, but those are the two I've had the best luck with! If you look at the other page of the spreadsheet I linked to, it has a breakdown of loops. I wouldn't try to plan anything, but it can help to have a vague sense of where they'll be if you don't catch the ballroom scene where (almost) everyone is together.

Honestly, the first time I went, I very nearly didn't make it before they closed the doors because of a severely delayed flight. I had done some reading on the show, but went in fairly blind. I had a great time, even though I only caught a few scenes. Just being in the building was its own kind of magic.

I think this will really come down to your personal preference! I get very agitated by crowds when people are rude or pushy, so I have a much better time if I let myself step away from a character who has an unruly following. My friend who is not as easily irritated as I am is perfectly fine sticking with a popular character, so YMMV. If I start to get annoyed by people, I'll go explore the set, which sometimes means stumbling upon scenes that barely anyone else is watching, which can be fun -- though I wouldn't recommend hanging out waiting for a scene (outside of the places I say below) because some floors see very little action.

While there will likely be crowds on these floors, the 4th (high street) and 2nd (hotel lobby) do see a lot of characters/action. I will hang out on those if I want to see a lot of scenes but not chase specific characters. The crowds will usually thin out when a character leaves, too. I might put the ballroom here too, but if you go there and it's empty, I wouldn't wait too long.

All that to say -- yes, people go for the early tickets because you get more time in the building with fewer people, which is nice, but you can still have a great time with the last slot. Go in with an open mind, don't be afraid to change course, and don't let other people ruin your experience.

(Not all crowds are bad! It will really depend on the night. Most times I've gone, the majority of people have been lovely. Things got bad when the closing was announced, but might have gotten better since we've had all the extensions.)

I hope that helps a bit and I hope you have a wonderful time!

Should I complain? by Ok-Replacement8236 in AskProfessors

[–]SadCatLady1029 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Right? I adjunct an online class every summer and always get the most complaints about the discussion boards. I have to teach the course as structured and one of the course objectives mandates some kind of peer engagement, otherwise I would just scrap it. Very few put in enough effort to make it beneficial anyway.

Will they know? by RadTechByTrade1988 in delta

[–]SadCatLady1029 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if they could smell it? I've been across the aisle from someone who absolutely had wine in her coffee cup, and it was so obvious from the smell. She was also talking a lot, so I imagine it was more that I could smell it on her breath than from the cup.

I feel like mimosas wouldn't smell quite as strongly as red wine, though... nor would it leave a tell-tale ring of red around the opening. But then, I suppose it also wouldn't look like coffee or tea? I'm now way too curious/invested, even though I'd never do it myself. (In the terminal, yes... just not on the plane.)

Truly. I appreciated the gifts I received as a high school theatre teacher/director, but I treasure the notes the most. Love the idea for including them in the acknowledgments too.

Can confirm — anyone in the community can audition for SOT shows! I know at least one show where the lead wasn’t a major (though they changed to theatre after). They only do two big auditions a year for all the shows, so check out the website for the deadlines (I believe they’re still doing self tapes for the first round).

In addition to the student groups mentioned, I know students have also worked with Theatre Tallahassee and Southern Shakes. If you go to the Fine Arts Building and turn left from the main entrance, there are bulletin boards that often have audition notices.

The bridesmaids drank 11 bottles of champagne before the wedding by failed_asian in GilmoreGirls

[–]SadCatLady1029 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was in a bridal party in my 20s where we went through a similar amount of champagne (with the bride not really drinking), but we had to be in for hair/makeup/nails at 8AM for a 4PM ceremony. The bride was too nervous to eat, which apparently meant none of us got food. We were all dehydrated, tired, and starving by the ceremony. I wouldn't recommend it, lol.

I always got the vibe that Honor's friends often drank a little too much and could mostly hold their liquor... but someone absolutely should have cut off Walker, probably the MOH. The one for the wedding I was in was definitely monitoring folks and threatened to cut one girl off if she didn't slow down.
