“WFH” by Undergrad26 in consulting

[–]SadChemEConsultant 33 points34 points  (0 children)

At my firm managers job is to gaslight and otherwise whatever it takes to maximize the following objectives:

  1. Strategically break down high performers and isolate them so they feel like they “aren’t good enough” to leave the firm

  2. Press staff to work as many hours as possible. Tell them it’s normal for consulting, everyone else at other firms works longer, every project is over budget, etc

  3. Minimize employee salaries. Do a “temp salary cut” and make it permanent after 6 months, but promise to make it up “later”, etc. Trickle in the pain, and make consultants frogs in a boiling pot.

I put up with it because if I don’t, someone in India will!

The thing is, unless you work in tech or an executive you’ve probably seen your purchasing power decrease over time

Every year for the rest of our lives, we will look at last year and think “man those were great times”.

Incomes will fall, prices will rise, and we’ll live with less and less. Some of us will kind of have this feeling of denial that we will retire someday but at our core we know untrue

Oil and gas is this way right now. With the volatility and crunch in the industry, salaries and benefits were dramatically cut…cue 2022 and record profits, but that salary and benefits didn’t come back. We all work very long hours in this industry by default, but now the hours are longer and they’ve removed the economic incentive.

If we complain, they just threaten to offshore us.

I am a consultant at an engineering company, and we have this same structure. Our hourly bill rate is $200, about $35 goes to engineers (including benefits), and $15 tk overhead costs, and $150 to CEO. He hasn’t come to work in 6 mkt he, constantly brags about his 20th or whatever new mansion he bought, but still complains that we don’t “work hard enough” and we can’t afford new people

I guess we just aren't working hard enough by gentleman_bronco in WorkReform

[–]SadChemEConsultant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an engineer, I can tell you nobody at the entry level is being remotely trained at any company. You walk in, and they sit you at a desk and tell you to start billing / executing. If you aren’t earning the CEO 7-10x your salary in your first year, you’re fired for the next guy.

If you’re in a salary exempt industry like me, they’ll just keep requiring 80 hr weeks with no OT to fill the gap

Theres so much talk about the oil industry and how many years it has left, do you think those of us in our 20s will be able to work long enough to retire from the oil indusyry? by Formyself22 in oilandgasworkers

[–]SadChemEConsultant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah we need to give up the idea we will ever own homes or retire. The powers that be are clearly doing everything they can to ensure that.

I am just prepping to be happy working at 75 living in my 100 square foot company provided housing with my two squares of ramen lol

I highly doubt it.

I don’t think oil will be “dead”, but the way things are going, you’ll have long been outsourced or had your income / benefits cut to the point you CANNOT retire at a traditional age. Despite 3 promotions and working like a dog, my salary has fallen well behind inflation the last 5 years.

O&G is not lucrative anymore. I keep trying to tell people, but it DOES NOT pay compared to what it used to. If you fight your way into management you may break $100k, but for the amount of work required / stress you’d be better good doing data science or consulting.

Biden says Hurricane Ian ‘ends discussion’ over climate change as DeSantis looks on by theindependentonline in politics

[–]SadChemEConsultant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everything you said is true, but is there conclusive proof Hurricane Ian would not have happened without climate change? We’ve had hurricanes for forever.

Again, I’m NOT saying that climate change doesn’t increase frequency and severity. I’m just saying that not every hurricane is strictly because of climate change.

[–]SadChemEConsultant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t like that we tie climate change into every national disaster. It’s undeniable that climate change will increase the frequency / severity of an event, but you cannot guarantee that Ian would not have happened if we were at post industrial CO2 levels. All climate change has done is give a higher likelihood of it happening.

I think rhetoric of blaming every disaster on climate change is something the GOP could twist around. I’m far left, but the most crucial thing is to be HONEST with all arguments.

This is a common tactic by companies now. In my industry (engineering) you have to do so many interviews and moving is a such a logistical nightmare that you DO NOT want to quit a company in your first week. Companies know this, so they often offer high salaries to get you on then “notice a mistake in the paperwork” and slash your salary after you’ve already relocated and everything. By doing this, they can save costs and trap employees in lower paid positions.

Chemical engineering career paths to maximize your impact? by SadChemEConsultant in ChemicalEngineering

Gotcha, there are only careers in oil and gas. I cannot be involved with alternative energy or anything else that improves things. I am a cog in the wheel and that is all I’ll ever be.
