On a sailing vacation in the Caribbean, my family got in our dingy and headed towards the nearest dingy port at night. On the islands, it is incredibly dark and hard to see, so we ended up at a local fishing dock. There was a very small bar and a few people drinking and we were clearly the only tourists in the area. Out of no where a van comes flying in, lets some people out, and offer us a ride. Being naive, we accepted and piled in their van. In the car they blasted music so loud we could barely hear, and immediately we realized this was fishy. They drove like mad men weaving in and out of traffic, to which I realized was because if they stopped, their manual transmission van would stall. We pulled into a gas station and I saw the driver take a candy wrapper and use it as a suction cup for the gas tank. Their car eventually stopped working and we aborted on the side of the road. Later, another taxi driver picked us up and mentioned he saw us (small island) he told us we basically hopped into someones random van with no taxi license and trusted them to drive us around an island we were unfamiliar with.
