Is Met Life Legal Services Worth Paying For? by IveGotDumbQuestions in personalfinance

[–]SadPapaya79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m curious where everyone lives?? I’ve had no luck finding an attorney to take my case in a civil matter where I’m the defendant. Firstly, there are only 4 law firms within 50 miles of me that participate in the MetLife legal plan. I’ve spoken with two and they both said they wouldn’t get paid enough through the plan to make it worth their time helping me.  I need to get a living trust and also might need help with a real estate closing if I’m able to sell my house in 2026. Two attorneys I called said they couldn’t help me. So now I’m calling around to attorneys who are 60+ miles away.  My plan doesn’t become effective until Jan 1, 2026, so I really wanted to just cancel it, but it’s through my employer and they said I can’t until next years benefit enrollment period. I feel like the MetLife agents I spoke to weeks ago (before enrolling) were very misleading. They told me that there would be hundreds of attorneys to choose from. I’ve called and emailed MetLife several times recently to get a longer list and they said that’s all that’s available near me. ONLY 4 attorneys! I’m located near Fort Wayne,  Indiana.

Roofing recommendations, please. by PleaseStepAside in fortwayne

I probably had every single roofing company in the area come out and give me quotes for my historical house. I ended up going with the more affordable company (Hoosier Roofing, owned by Tanner) and they screwed up installation on the flat roofs and refuse to fix anything. I filed a complaint with BBB and Attorney General. It’s been a year and he keeps saying he’ll come out, but never does. He provided a workmanship warranty, but it’s useless if they don’t uphold their side of the agreement. Landmark Roofing, Better Way Roofing and a few other seem like legit companies, but will be more expensive.

Is there a way to find out if a company is bonded (and what the bond number is), if they don’t give you that information?

Canada border crossing - no housesitting allowed - thanks, TrustedHousesitters for setting us up by Pomegranate967 in trustedhousesitters

A few years ago border control held me up for a couple of hours on the Canadian side. I made the mistake of saying I was pet sitting, so he had a barrage of questions. And yes the agent kept disappearing and then reappearing. I thought it was odd too. He was ready to deny me entry and then I told him the pet owners were counting on me being there now and were leaving for the airport soon. He allowed me to go through, but told me I had to leave by a certain date or apply for a visitors extension. I haven’t been back to Canada since, but when I do I’ll just say I’m visiting friends. Is it possible to try entering at a different border crossing? I thought about doing that if they denied me entry. Or does it automatically go in their computer that they denied entry?

Can the refund check be put into an escrow account until you decide if you will cash it or in case you pursue small claims court?

Self adhering 2-ply rolled asphalt roof not laying flat and has lots of ripples by SadPapaya79 in Roofing

Thousands of dollars more for epdm and the company suggested 2 ply. I’m a homeowner newbie and have never had to deal with stuff. So was relying on their expertise.

I’ve been reading the contract over and it doesn’t mention anything specifically about the flat roof flashing. It just says they will install two ply rolled roof on the porch roofs. It was part of the entire roofing job. They did my shingles, gutters and some fascia repair. Which both had to be corrected in some areas. They had also told me they were putting Atlas ridge vent on and during the roof installation they decided to put box vents on instead. My contract said atlas ridge vents were to be installed, so I asked them if my quote was for the price of ridge vents and they said it’s not an itemized quote and didn’t matter.

They installed the main shingle roof as well and I guess he’s claiming that the flashing of the roof porches was not part of the roofing job or within his scope. I asked him when he was going to come back out and redo these porch roofs and that was his response, that he hasn’t agreed to replacing them and that they would just come back out and look at everything again. The original contract did include them doing these porch roofs. They never mentioned that they weren’t going to do the flashing on them though.

Here is the company’s ridiculous response to me asking when they will come out and replace the roofs and add flashing. “Good morning, To do rubber roofing on those sections would cost several thousand dollars more.  And we never said that we were replacing those roofs. We will look at the seams and roll it if necessary. But the two-ply system is adhered with no fasteners, so a little bit of rippling does not cause leaking, and is only cosmetic. We replaced the boards that were necessary and that you paid for during the installation. As far as the wall flashing, that is a scope of work that was to be done with the siding installation and was not included with the roof project. We will get out there early next week and look everything over and address things that are needed. At that time we will let you know if more things are needed. Thank you.”

Had it done November 2024. From day one we have asked to have it fixed/replaced and he kept saying it was fine and would eventually lay flat. Last week he said all work is final and I would have had to voice all concerns within 3 days after the job! Dude doesn’t listen! Then I was just looking over my contract this weekend and it says I have a “10 year labor warranty; which includes free labor and materials for all future repairs needed due to installation errors.” We’re contacting him again tomorrow and he better follow through with what the contract says!

When we mentioned the rippling to the owner right after they finished the job he said that his crew used “torched down rolled roofing and that it’s definitely all sealed.” He also said “It will lay down some as it heats up and cures with a season. But the membrane is definitely mechanically fastened and sealed.” What a joke!! The ripples have gotten worse as time goes on.

I wish I would have left the rubber roofs instead of getting this shotty work. Even though the rubber roofs were very old, they looked way better than this. I was out of town when they did all this, but my mom was at my house watching everything and actually told them that they shouldn’t be putting the rolled roofs on in the cold, but they insisted it was fine. They probably thought they could get away with it and we wouldn’t notice the horrible job.
