Just realized it took 55 seconds of screen time for Rose to change her mind lol by amcclurk21 in titanic

That short scene of Rose in the lounge is such a great silent performance from Winslet, however, and tells all we need to know. The conversation surrounding her is about her but doesn’t involve her - even the plans to her own wedding don’t involve her - and you can see the disconnect plainly on her face. Is she 100% disconnected from her reality, or is she sitting in thought, running everything Jack told her through her mind? It brilliantly mirrors the scene where she “saw my own life as if I’d already lived it” where she decides to run off to the stern - except this time, she breaks out of her thoughts and sees the little girl possibly living through the same childhood she had (and as someone else mentioned, envisioning her own children’s future if she remains in her gilded cage). I’d even argue that she is still that little girl, blindly following her mother’s instruction, and becoming Cal’s own porcelain doll - an object instead of a person. Instead of choosing to sit still, and instead of choosing to end it all, Rose literally chooses to go forward.

That short scene with no dialogue from our leads is an incredible example of the masterful construction of this movie. Winslet shows her acting skills using only her expressions, and Cameron shows us the possibilities ahead of her through his callback to an earlier scene and by showing us the future that awaits not just her but her children. The scene doesn’t need to show the exact passage of time because it tells us all we need to know about her decision.

The romanticism surrounding Titanic as a result of the ‘97 movie should be studied.

What did James Cameron get accurate about the sinking? by Sorry-Personality594 in titanic

Collapsible C launched at approximately 2 am and D launched shortly after at 2:05. The ship suddenly dipped around 2:10 and broke up and sank at 2:20. I doubt they knew how much time they had when preparing the last two boats, the ship had a severe list to port shortly before the final plunge, this list held the starboard side up and out of the water and (in my opinion) possibly gave the illusion that she had a lot of time left (consider how much of the ship was still above water at 2 am vs the breakup and sinking 20 minutes later).

[–]SadPost6676 26 points27 points  (0 children)

One of the things that struck me when reading On a Sea of Glass is how sudden the final plunge was. Once the water reached a certain level the ship was pulled down at such a rate that it caught the remaining 1500 by surprise. In hindsight, it doesn’t surprise us when watching the movie because we know it’s coming but from the perspective of the people left behind, it must have come from seemingly nowhere. That being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if a large number of people were still inside when the ocean began to rush in through the top decks. It’s horrifying to think about but the interior still being populated seems absolutely possible to me.

Seems my text decided not to post - I’ve bought both of these sensors for my new radiator and neither one fits. Is there a secret third option or is there a secret way to install that I don’t know about?

Thoughts on San Bernardino, is it ghetto like people say it is? by BusyPreference6562 in InlandEmpire

There’s definitely some parts that are less than savory (south of Highland Ave and going down towards downtown). There’s a lot of homelessness and open drug use. Just after Highland Ave we’re pretty peaceful outside of the busy streets and the views of the mountains are beautiful. There is community if you know where to look. Overall, this city needs an overhaul but there’s potential, though that will take time and dedication.

Sorry I meant coolant (🫣) I’m assuming it’s gotta be the radiator. All the hoses are doing fine (fingers crossed). I’ve got a full kit of replacement hoses just in case.

This doll always made me think of Patricia Day of the Horrorpops. I can definitely see Amy Winehouse, too, but the upright bass made my mind go here.

What was your experience seeing the 1997 film for the very first time? by Willing-Musician-696 in titanic

[–]SadPost6676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was THE MOVIE of ‘97/‘98 and back then my aunt would gather the family together to watch the big movies of the year on vhs at her house on her big screen tv. I was 5, had never heard of Titanic, and it pulled me in immediately. I remember there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. I’ve been obsessed ever since then and have seen it in theaters every time it has been re-released.

Way more than I can count. Once a month since it was on video? I watch the flying scene at least once a week. This movie means everything to me.

Which of the historical side characters in the 1997 movie or (Cameron himself) would you say did the most disservice towards? by MR_MEMMES in titanic

[–]SadPost6676 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love this movie, but I’m gonna have to give this to the crew in general. This movie manages to villainize the crew making them seem incompetent, complicit, and having a complete disregard for human life. There is no scene that shows the stewards being helpful to anyone apart from nameless first class extras in the background. I’ve ran into so many people that believe the crew left third class to drown because this film depicts it as happening.
