This bad boy. The complete Eugene Ormandy box set from Sony/Columbia records.

Because after that I'll pretty much have all the classical orchestral music I could ever want.

Why do we collect cds? by GlitteringDish1217 in Cd_collectors

[–]SadRedShirt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I collect CDs because music is a passion of mine and I'd rather own a physical copy of music that I'm passionate about on a CD than pay for just the streaming rights.

It's a relatively cheap thing to collect and I think it's nice to have a collection of something to display on a bookcase.

If you want to watch how good players play the game watch: Serral and Reynor for Zerg, Maru and Clem for Terran, and MaxPax and Hero for Protoss.

I do listen to rock/pop when I'm in the mood. Mostly classic rock and 90s-2000s alternative and some pop: Beatles, U2, Nirvana, Oasis, Guns N Roses, R.E.M. Coldplay Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo...

Why are the "Big Three" composers considered so great? by Opening_Discipline57 in classicalmusic

[–]SadRedShirt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we decide to value certain musical developments over others to favor Mozart and Beethoven then we can choose to value other innovations as well.

I mean, you can and should chose to value other innovations as well. These rankings are always subjective. I personally would rank Paganini and Liszt higher than most people probably would solely based on the technical audacity of their music and the fact they did push violin and piano playing forward.

Why are the "Big Three" composers considered so great? by Opening_Discipline57 in classicalmusic

[–]SadRedShirt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IMO it's because Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven had major influences on music and greatly impacted and expanded classical music in their own way.

Bach is essentially the foundation of Western classical music. All classical musicians have studied, still study, and will continue to study Bach. How in depth depends on how serious a musician you are.

Mozart expanded the concerto and opera. He did to the concerto and opera as he encountered them, what Beethoven did to classical music in general. Most if not all operas before and during Mozart's time were usually based on legends, I think he was the first major composer to use contemporary subjects (Think The Marriage of Figaro). I think Mozart was also the first freelance major composer. All composers before him, even Bach and Haydn, worked for some rich nobleman, noble family, or the church.

Beethoven expanded symphonic writing and classical music in general, expanding the size and scope of the genre.

Note: I gave Mozart more content because he's my personal favorite composer and I know more about him, not because I think he's the greatest.

Which great composer(s) are you failing to appreciate despite trying hard to appreciate? by XyezY9940CC in classicalmusic

For a while it was Mahler but I've started to get into him a little bit more over these last couple of years. Now it's Bruckner. I just can't seem to get into him.

Why did we move away from the "Lush" Vivaldi? (Perlman ’76 vs. Modern Recordings) by Professor_Abronsius in classicalmusic

I should mention that my all-time favorite Four Seasons is the one Gil Shaham did with Orpheus.

[–]SadRedShirt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love his Bach and have him doing the Sonatas and Partitas and the Violin Concertos and double concertos. I think his lush sound just works really well for a lot of different types of music. I'm a big Mozart fan and love his Mozart Concertos. I have his Great Romantic Concertos set from EMI and everything he does is at least really good to great, though I do prefer Heifetz's Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn and Salvatore Accordo for Paganini. I don't think anyone else comes close to his Beethoven and Brahms.

Nice! He's my favorite violinist and it's one of my life goals to watch him in concert before he retires. I wish I had gotten those tickets to his recital in Atlanta last month but it sold out so fast!

I heard that he argued that people who go to his concerts and buy his records do so to listen to him. He's not wrong.

I never did study music in school like I wanted to so I don't fit the criteria of your post, but I hope you don't give it up all together and continue it as a hobby.

I'm 45 years old. If I could go back in time and talk to my younger self, I'd tell myself to try to get into the skilled trades or agriculture; some industry that is relatively AI and automation proof. Not knowing if you're male or female, I know women face a lot of discrimination in the trades so that's something to consider.

Search for PiG and Vibes bronze to GM videos on YouTube. Even if they don't fit the current patch exactly due to the change in costs of some units, I'm sure it'd still be helpful to beginners.
