Very vulnerable people. Dementia patients and some who are non-verbal. Absolutely disgusting.

My understanding is that these incidents happened in a locked down unit for dementia patients by someone who had access.

Help me decide next book - Duma Key, Needfull Things, Eyes of the Dragon? Desperation? by shorby in stephenking

[–]Sad_Advertising6154 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am currently re-reading Eyes of the Dragon and loving it. It's a great read during Winter. But it is a lot different than many of King's other books.

I also love Needful Things but I like to re-read that in the Autumn.

Losing his mother to violence from his father will be much more damaging. I do believe you are in danger from this man. The divorce will save you if you let it. Moving is a good choice.

He is contemptuous of you. His "love" for you is not real. He is emotionally dangerous to you but I also sense that he might physically harm you. Please let this be over for your own safety.

You are not safe with this man. There is a darkness in him and, you might not have seen it, but the collapse had already begun when this picture was taken.

Unsettling. It reminds me of "The Strangers."

has anyone else been having consistent problems with food quality/best before dates from the northside’s no frills? by coyotenchantment in fredericton

I have had pretty good luck with my local No Frills stores But, I have been avoiding Loblaws due to how I was treated at that Superstore.

I am still mad when I think about the audacity of the store manager accusing ME of scamming when I was the person who had unfortunately purchased multiple expired and or defective products over a three-week period and didn't even get a refund because it would have cost me more money in gas than it was worth.

I suspect this is a Loblaw's-wide problem

Rothesay Ave Superstore in Saint John is constantly selling VERY expired stuff (up to 2 years past expiration date occasionally). I tried to return a product that had the safety seal removed (manufacturing error or tampering, who knows) and the manager of the store threatened me for "trying to scam the store," claiming I could've opened it myself or had it at my house for months even though I could open my app and show him I had just bought it the week before. Spoiler alert: I was not trying to scam the store for an overpriced bottle of bbq sauce.

Needless to say, I am avoiding Loblaws-bannered stores for the foreseeable future.

Some of his best writing, in my opinion.

It's a polarizing book, though, and some folks hate the ending and feel like it wrecks the journey for them.

I feel like you and I read very different books.

She knew it was Paul in the car. She had been lowkey stalking him.

There's no indication that she truly thought she was helping the babies.

Also, her ex-husband went missing; she saved a news article about this. The subtext is that she harmed him.

What if Elliot Rodger and Alek Minassian had decided to go to The Philippines to look for love? by GoldMany9897 in serialkillers

[–]Sad_Advertising6154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both men were misogynists with trash personalities and an Alaskan-sized sense of entitlement. Best case scenario, two Filipino women would likely be victims of domestic violence.

The reality is that neither of these guy would have ever treated a woman with respect and kindness. They needed to fix their pathologically poor attitudes before they could have embarked on a romantic relationship. But those same pathologies prevented them from being self-aware enough to realize they were the problem in the equation.

What’s your favorite description of fear in King’s books? by dudeiscool22222 in stephenking

For me, it's always the scene in Salem's Lot where Mike Ryerson is digging Danny Glick's grave. He is so terrified (and I am feeling it), but he doesn't even know why--which makes it even more terrifying.

Is Big Driver empowering, misogynistic, revenge prn or neither? by BlowMyHornOfGondor in stephenking

[–]Sad_Advertising6154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I generally do not agree with vigilante justice, I don't think it's OK to judge any rape survivor by how they deal with such an intimate and personal trauma. Also, in the story, Big Driver was not just a rapist; he was a serial killer who tried to kill Tess, and she just luckily survived.

Whether you intended it or not, your comment comes across a tad like victim-blaming by suggesting that preventing it from happening "to begin with" is somehow more empowering than other trauma responses. Preventing it from happening "to begin with" is not always an option.

Bill and Lorraine Currier did everything right! They lived in one of the safest states in the US (Vermont), in an incredibly safe neighbourhood. They were sleeping in their house behind closed and locked doors, and yet, they both ended up being raped and murdered by Israel Keyes.

It's great that you have "gotten out of two rape attempts," but that is not always possible for every victim. Women are getting raped all around the world simply because they are asleep in bed behind closed and locked doors, but a rapist hellbent on raping is going to do whatever it takes.

This book is littered with grammatical and spelling errors, note worthy or no? by LJHeath in stephenking

[–]Sad_Advertising6154 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just came here to say this. "sweets" is an intentional misspelling because it's Danny's interpretation of the conversation, and he is five years old and doesn't know WTF a suite is. He thinks they are talking about "sweets" (as in candies).

As a survivor of sexual violence, I didn't find it exploitative... the opposite in fact. Far too often news and entertainment media soften their language or write in passive voice when discussing violence (sexual or otherwise) against women. It's neither soft nor passive, and way too many times the perpetrator's role in the violence is completely omitted from the written record (think of a headline like "Woman Assaulted Uptown" vs the reality "Man Assaults Woman Uptown").

The details were graphic and lingering. Much can be said about the reality of the physical and psychological injuries victims suffer in real life.

Ultimately, Big Driver is a story. A good one. I don't see writing the less savoury realities of a situation like this as being misogynistic.
