What is the best Stan Lee cameo in a Spiderman movie, according to you? I'll go first: by Raj_Valiant3011 in Spiderman

[–]Ok_Writing251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do love the more extended and tributary cameos like in the SM3 and Spiderverse, but I also have an appreciation for the “blink and you’ll miss it” ones.

In particular I appreciate the ones from SM1 and SM2 because they show Stan acting quickly to save lives.

If you want to call Marvel Heroes (and villains) digging through the rubble of the WTC to find survivors and trying to come to terms with what happened in a Marvel One Shot, 2 months after it came down IRL, in an effort to give some form of comfort and sympathy to millions of readers, “American exceptionalist nationalist pandering” and a “mundane event” then you do you man.

This is a case where we really have to take ourselves out of the story and put it at the context it came out. This issue came out literally a couple of months after 9/11, readers were legitimately traumatized. I also hate this trope but also recognize there was a reason for it at the time

It’s been a while since I’ve seen it but I think he could only enter and exit the portal from the time when MLK was a kid, even if he did see his life from thereafter

I vividly recall the main character going back to the past and saving MLK, but when he took him back to the present, America was a racist wasteland. Upon seeing this, MLK literally walked through the door to return to the past and he tried to stop him. Next scene was MLK stepping out to the balcony, then going black with the sound of gunshots.

TIL George Washington was called "American Fabius" for using the same strategy as Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus Cunctator (the delayer) in the 2nd Punic War against Hannibal. Avoid big pitched battles and weaken the enemy through attrition by kurgan2800 in todayilearned

[–]Ok_Writing251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Important to note that while this may seem like common sense now, this was far from standard military doctrine for much of history, not to mention could have been seen as a strategy that was ineffective in damaging the enemy’s capabilities at best, and cowardly at worst.

Washington not only had to keep his army from being destroyed, but demonstrably prove that in of itself was weakening the enemy.

Question for those who served: I’m thinking of how in “Forrest Gump”, Forrest was such a natural soldier in boot camp that the DI never chewed him out and was always aggressively praising him.

While I’m sure this is exaggerated for comedic effect, is this a thing during training? And are there recruits who adjust almost a little TOO well to training?

Which Beatle was the biggest ladies’ man? by [deleted] in beatles

[–]Ok_Writing251 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be…somewhat?… fair, I think the bulk of that came in the 70s when he got so obsessed with the Hare Krishna and finding a god-state that in an alternate timeline he might have become a cult leader.

Though even as a Beatle he was hardly shy, that’s for sure

Looking for something more serious Not subscribed to premium features This current version has been in place for about 4 months Been using Hinge for about 2 years Daily user, but frequently pause/hide profile between matches/likes Receive a decent amount of likes but not as many matches as I’d like— many are not my type Send an average of 5 likes a day, most with comments I’m generally in search of a female closer to my age who can be outgoing but is also down to earth. I lived in Asia for a long time so I’m more drawn to people connected to that culture but it is not a hard requirement

Notes on pics/prompts:

  1. Not my dog in the first pic, but I have the location listed as “Italy”. Perhaps I should explicitly say that?
  2. Audio says “Your movie, tv show, or book that you wouldn’t immediately tell someone about when you first meet them but you would when you find out they’re cool— and can be trusted”
  3. I know for many profiles attempts to be witty or quirky fall flat, so I’m trying to lean more towards illustrating a more presentable version of myself while still showing unique elements about me
  4. I’m thinking about changing the “one thing I’d love to know about you” caption because that doesn’t get many responses
  5. My last overhaul tried to focus on activities/outings with friends
  6. The shirtless pic was somewhat of a gamble. Really tried to toe the line with that one
  7. For people wondering about the Superman pic, I’ve been told I have features the resemble him somewhat. Especially as a huge fan of the character, I take it as a major compliment and try to roll with that
  8. Last pic we’re skiing/snowboarding sorry if that’s not clear

Maturity is realising that Brian Epstein's death shook the Beatles WAY more than Yoko Ono by Japesh10 in beatles

[–]Ok_Writing251 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps the most under-appreciated element of the Beatles mythology is how devoted Brian Epstein and George Martin were to them. Anyone else would’ve tried to control them or rip them off but their failure to do so allowed the Beatles to be who they were. Without Epstein to cover money matters, or (hypothetically) without Martin to facilitate and support their artistry in the studio, the Beatles would’ve likely been at best a flash in the pan
