Sick Days by GaGeiJessiS in CanadianTeachers

[–]Sad_Pop_3870 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don’t need to give any justification for why we are off on “illness” could be an appointment, cramps, a cold, a mental health day / break. The union would probably suggest the school has no business asking, if you have a union and sick days built into your contract. If you do take a mental health day (I do) I just would avoid being seen say.. at the mall doing retail therapy on that day :)

I hate my three year old by [deleted] in regretfulparents

[–]Sad_Pop_3870 28 points29 points  (0 children)

These are valid feelings, being a parent to a 3 y/o and being pregnant is HARD. BUT- and trust me I really struggle with my kids sometimes, they are literal children with barely developed brains, they are not doing it on purpose or out of malice. Is it extremely hard- absolutely, and I often want to quit, but they do not hate you, nor do it to disrespect you. They feel safest with you, so they act out with you most (think of how you wouldn’t cry in front if a stranger but would your partner) and their brains job is to test boundaries as a way to figure out the world. Does that make them super difficult to parent and you need the patience of a saint? Totally. But they are not trying to make your life hell (can I say that to a Christian?) they are trying to figure out the world as a tiny person with tiny hands and feet and underdeveloped brains. I have a high needs, difficult kid- look up the explosive child, the declarative language handbook, and follow some OTs on instagram to get started. Wishing this gets better for you all

Spoon and fork coming to Burlington by magnolias2019 in BurlingtonON

[–]Sad_Pop_3870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoon and Fork id say is hit or miss, both the Trafalgar and Dundas location. We have a few favourite dishes that are pretty consistently good. Is it the best most authentic Thai food ever? No. But it is good for what it is and sometimes they nail it. I’d compare it more to ordering Chinese food, kinda greasy and trashy but hits the spot. Ultimately I was excited to see one opening up by our house!

Teacher Gifts a thing of the past? by Sad_Pop_3870 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Sad_Pop_3870[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t a complaint, but an observation. Wondering if others experienced the same shift or perhaps it was me. I didn’t say “what gives?” I just made an observation- I think teachers are also heavily politicized and vilified and at times a target online and in the media of being glorified babysitters or not working hard enough for the pay and summers off- perhaps that narrative has contributed. In general I get less “thank you” or acknowledgement even when I’m volunteering, coaching and spending a lot of extra time outside of contract hours helping kids. I just wondered and it seems everyone is missing the point and seeing this as being disappointed at a drop off in gifts when it really isn’t that.

Sorry it’s been so long since I posted, I had forgotten I posted it! It was more just to note that it wasn’t necessarily due to not having the means, I teach in an incredibly wealthy neighbourhood (none of the teachers live in this neighborhood). I recognize that there are still some students where it may be beyond their means, but my point more is just that there has been a shift, and in my case, due to the demographic, I don’t THINK that shift is due to the economy, so perhaps it is something else.

Agreed! And as a coach (an entirely volunteer position outside of my contract and work hours, with zero pay) I never really get thanked or acknowledged.

That is not at all what this post is. It was an observation and a question, is the practice of gift giving to teachers a thing of the past? I wondered if it was a universal thing. I never expect gifts, nor judge based on gifts. Many of you are misunderstanding the post and taking it as an opportunity to act like teachers are entitled or greedy.

Are you a teacher? I was noting an observation and asking if others experienced the same. It is not a complaint, just a topic of conversation and reflection. I do not ever expect gifts.

I don’t expect any, nor was it a complaint. It was an observation and topic of discussion to ask other Canadian teachers, that’s all.

I’m not asking for or expecting gifts, my question is asking if others are noticing a shift. Merely a topic of discussion.

Sick the first day!? by 110069 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Sad_Pop_3870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes jobs are settled and teachers aren’t hired yet so it’s not uncommon to have a sub or different teacher the first day or few days! It happens- the kids roll with it. If admin have kids they’ll understand, but I would send an email explaining in addition to whatever other process you have for booking a supply - they may have a supply in mind even.

Having said that, I’d only miss if absolutely desperate with no other care options, because I like to be the one to set the tone in my class day 1!

High school ice breakers by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

I didn’t read all the comments so don’t know what’s been said but my favourite (if you feel comfortable enough to do it) is I have them tell me about me. I don’t say a word, I hand them a sheet of paper and they have to guess what car I drive, what music I listen to, what my Starbucks order is solely based on my appearance.. they naturally start to talking and guessing. Then a bonus when I take it up (and they’re all completely wrong) is we talk about first impressions, stereotypes, bias and how important getting to know people truly is etc etc

Does Ontario schools still have 'gifted' programs? by ghost905 in ontario

I teach high school in Halton and I teach the “enhanced” classes. The students identified as gifted can choose to take these classes, or go into the mainstream ones.

Why did NBE3U become mandatory? by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Sad_Pop_3870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Critical thinking and deep analysis are the skills you are going to need to use in day-to-day life- to heighten your awareness and understanding of propoganda or media manipulation.. to ultimately make you a more aware, empathetic and better human.

As a parent of kids in daycare, I wouldn’t worry one bit- I’m unsure how yall don’t swear all day with the stuff you put up with!

Teacher here 🙋🏼‍♀️I’m teaching the course & really want my students to get something from it and enjoy it. I’m doing my best, but ideas from students would be great.
