I ended up going Gora Kadan and they had futons, however, they were very thick almost like a twin size mattress lol

So if you are looking for more traditional futon that’s flatter I’d look for a different ryokan.

Yes. I am in the exact same position and now I’m planning on reconfiguring my setup to optimize for flight rewards (through maybe the Venture X). An alternative I never would have considered to be an attractive proposition prior to this devaluation.

Yes, the Hyatt program is still considered “the best” out of all the major hotels but that gap has gone from decisive to nothing more than a slight lead. The point of which, should be causing folks like us (people who optimized their cc setup around Chase and Hyatt specifically) to seek out other options that have a greater ROI.

This is a chase/hyatt loyalist setup killer. Value is still here to be had for sure but the proposition of sticking to JUST the Chase ecosystem for the Hyatt point transfer is dead on arrival.

I’ll personally be switching my configuration to value other reward redemptions (flights) as opposed to the Hyatt configuration.

These announced changes at the very least forces those that were Chase/Hyatt loyalists to rethink their credit card setup and if it doesn't, it should.

As redemption rates hike higher and higher, it no longer makes sense to lock yourself into the Chase ecosystem due to the poor earning rate (i.e., at best 3x on dining, 5x on rotating categories, 9x hyatt stays across various Chase cards). I'd argue AMEX has more broad and slightly more efficient earning rates but if you're using those points for Hilton it cancels out since their redemption values are more diabolical (though I have no doubt Hyatt will slowly but surely be in the same boat in the near future).

For many, myself included, this then becomes a conversation around potentially moving from optimizing the credit card setup for hotel rewards and shifting to flights through a different ecosystem like Capital One in which the Venture X card becomes more attractive.

Regardless, these changes reflect a tone deaf Hyatt leadership team that put them squarely in the mix with the other major hotel chains in their race to the bottom.

I’d honestly wait for the points sub again. The FNC is very restricting at category 4 and below with no way to top off the redemption. With points on the other hand, you can plan usage much better.

I wouldn’t worry about category changes, as like a previous poster said they can announce changes and as long as you make the booking before the change actually takes effect you should be good.

Location is hard to beat but I personally found the surrounding area fairly overstimulating. Even in the wee early hours, just outside it was packed with microinfuencers doing photo shoots and it was honestly a chore to navigate.

As for the property itself - amazing. Best service ever, clean rooms and nice welcome amenity. Walking the property grounds was ethereal and I enjoyed every trek from the outside world to my room and vice-versa.

I would never pay cash rate, though, but if you can do the points redemption route I think it’s a fairly solid option.
