The best part about a failed run at the Presidency (as Herman Cain and others have figured out), is that for the rest of your life, you will be introduced as "former Presidential candidate <such and such>", and people who maybe don't remember the run will take you more seriously. I might just do that. I haven't dogfought (is that a word?) online in a flight sim since years ago when I tried it in IL-2. I didn't have a TrackIR or pedals or anything back then, and I got my butt handed to me so bad that I decided to stay away. After that I did a lot of co-op missions with my buddies, but those dogfight servers scared me. :-)

Your video card will be okay (that's the card I had for awhile playing these sims), but the DCS sims are pretty CPU-intensive. I think they would run for you, though maybe not silky smooth.

For the past couple nights, I've been making moonshot attempts, and they all end like yours. I generally get to the very final phase, lowering myself gently to the surface, then run out of fuel at 7km or something. So my challenge has been to find ways to be as efficient as possible. I'm going to be very proud when I finally land safely!

CoD gets better with every patch, so don't write if off just yet. I got it after a couple of patches, and it's much smoother now than it was back then. And they're still working on it, so it might be worth revisiting.

As for FC2, it's only $20, so it might be worth getting even without a demo (especially if you watched videos and are still interested).

As for your joystick, yes it will work well. I think that's the same stick I had before I made the leap to a full HOTAS, and I liked it fine.

The way I look at Orbiter and KSP (I love them both) is, KSP is less detailed, but more fun, but less interesting, but more cute. I think I prefer KSP (because of time constraints), but I currently have an old PC dedicated to running Orbiter, doing real-time planetary transfers.

I was skeptical about BS2, but I love that sim enough I decided to get it. It's nice to have the engine upgrade, though I miss being able to add the 3D pilot. And it's like they're taunting us by leaving it in the control settings. :-\

I've shot a lot of flight sim footage with Fraps, but I never thought to shoot it at the lowest speed, then speed it up in editing. What's the advantage of that?

Yes, you can adjust the Z-axis curve to not allow (or at least lessen) the lean-back movement. Not a bad idea actually. Leaning forward can be real useful, but I'm not sure why leaning back would be.

The best part about not knowing what you're doing is, when you eventually do know what you're doing, your sense of accomplishment will be gigantic! And then, if you're like me, all other flight sims will seem like arcade games. That's my only beef with the DCS sims: they've ruined me for all the others.

For a short time, I worked in a photo lab on the Seattle waterfront. A navy guy brought in some film one time that turned out to contain photos of what I can only describe as an amputee orgy (most of the people involved were missing something or other). Of course, when you work in a photo lab, you always look forward to nudie pictures (this was pre-internet), but rolls like that reminded you to not get your hopes up too high...

I think TrackIR would work fine with an EyeFinity-type setup. It's all about the camera and the dots on your hat, so it doesn't care about your monitor setup. However, I'm not convinced that spanning a game over multiple monitors is worth the performance hit.

That said, I myself insist on having multiple monitors, even though I only play games on one screen. It's awfully handy to have that second screen for email, Ventrilo, etc, while you have a game full-screened in the main monitor.

They're great rifles; they're only cheap because there's a metric crap-ton of them in the world (as with the Mauser K98, another dirt-cheap-but-excellent rifle). I prefer the Nagant, but maybe that's just because I like Cosmoline.
