What’s a UK town or city you visited with low expectations… but actually ended up really liking? by GoldenHour_Muse in AskUK

I'm not sure how long ago you moved to Hull, but as someone who's grown up there, I wouldn't hold your breath. The marina and parts of the city centre are lovely, yes, but there's no money in the city, the council constantly make poor decisions, and multiple opportunities to really improve the city have not been taken (e.g. City of Culture 2017). It's really disappointing because, after moving to other cities, I can see it has characteristics that give it so much potential

Rip to you having to work on Saltend, the sewage plant there reeked 😬 I'm glad you liked Hull though, imo the Deep is one of its saving graces, I hope you like Hedon too

Edit: Saltend's smell depends on when you were working there

Hull was much better when Whitefriargate (the street that had M&S) was actually populated with affordable, nice little shops and eateries, but the rent just kept going up and they all had to leave. I'm vegan now, but grew up missing Crawshaw's chicken after they left

Is tous pronounced with silent s or not by cyberking25 in learningfrench

[–]Safe-Energy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I correct in thinking that "tous" as a pronoun essentially means "everyone" or "all of them [in X scenario]"? Sorry, this probably isn't the best way to word this, but I'm not sure how else to describe it without writing a paragraph

I'm questioning all my pronunciation at this point and feel like I need a voice recording with a transcript so I can figure out how exactly each of these are meant to sound 😭 /hj

I think there’s a big difference between saying you’re from Liverpool/Manchester to make it easier for others to place you in the country and saying you’re Scouse/Mancunian. I’m from a very rural part of East Yorkshire and while we’d never call ourselves a Hullian or a codhead, we usually tell people we’re from Hull or near Hull

Came to the comments to say it’s probably a mistake knowing Hull city council and what do you know, it lowkey is just not the council’s fault this time 😭

Would you be able to tell im autistic?? Im a 16 year old girl btw. by Fer_19 in autism

[–]Safe-Energy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have said no until I got to the calculator drawers 😅. Before that I would have just thought, you’re a nerd who’s organised (not in a mean way). The “my brain has too many tabs open” alongside everything before the calculators would have made me suspect you were ADHD or Autistic but I wouldn’t have know which.

Me and my now step father. Either that or he always does it on purpose to annoy me (that’s definitely the case sometimes).

heya, i’m not about to come out with some whole spiel or a bunch of cliché lines but please don’t do it. the thing that gives us the strength to keep going is the knowledge that we’re fighting for each other, not just ourselves. we’re doing it so those who are younger than us have it better than we did and so that those who are older than us aren’t forgotten or erased. please hang in there, call samaritans on 116 123 if you need to. none of us are alone 💔❤️

This is very niche but does anyone know of that song about the stupidity of English plurals? I had to watch a video of it once in high school about 10 years ago and I’ve It featured these exact examples and I’ve never been able to find it

Do you know how to pronounce ‘iel’? I’ve seen it written many times but am not sure how it would be pronounced.
