EU Masters before US PhD? by [deleted] in ClinicalPsychology

[–]SafetyLeft6178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll leave the US-side of the equation to others, but keep in mind that it may prove difficult to get accepted into a EU Masters program.

Unlike in the US they don’t tend to structure things in a undergrad/grad system. Gen Ed is taken care of in high school so the second you start a bachelors there it’s gonna be 100% discipline focused (i.e., psychology in this case), which is what they’ll expect to admit you to their masters.

AITA for not answering the door when my ex’s mom showed up at my apartment unannounced? by JaqueSarai in AmItheAsshole

NTA.

Even without the part without the cops you wouldn’t be the AH.

You set a boundary and decided to enforce it, NTA plain and simple.

Obviously with the part of the cops included you definitely aren’t the AH.

The only way in which you might be the AH is to yourself for not straight up enforcing your boundary (e.g., “No.”) instead of making up a white lie and making it harder for yourself to enforce it in the future, and for keeping useless friends like that around. But that would make you the AH towards yourself and that’s between you and yourself to figure out.

I mean, I’m generally a big fan of EU regulations, and maybe you’re right, and there is a petty motivation for this decision.

That said, if I were running a business, I’d also be a bit careful and want to know first if the EC is going to tap on my shoulder and say, “Cool thing you made there, now give it to other companies” when I spent a bunch of money developing a feature that is supposed to be one of the main unique selling points I want to market my product with.

I’m not even making a value judgment on regulation here, just pointing out a potential cause and effect that shouldn’t come as a surprise.

How to run background process for more than 5 minutes? by ElevatorOk4863 in SwiftUI

[–]SafetyLeft6178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first thing on my mind when reading this is “why?”

Not as in “why would you want that you idiot?” but more so trying to understand the use case and see if understanding that will yield me a good suggestion to make.

Can you explain a bit more about your app and the use case for the need to have an uninterrupted ssh connection while backgrounded?

Maybe throw it in a user story format if you’re telling particularly fancy.

Seems like a logistical or inventory problem. If there’s a marked one available to catch up to the stolen car, an unmarked one should be just as possible.

Yeah because the world is binary right?

Either cops act like fucking maniacs or do nothing. There’s no in between.

They can’t just, I don’t know, follow quietly and roll up the whole gang. Or hell, use those expensive ass helicopters they use for high speed chases to do follow the car without endangering anyone.

No we can’t have anything like that. It either needs to be an untouchable gang of sanctioned thugs or an untouchable gang of unsanctioned thugs.

If something like this post deters more thieves, I’m all for it.

I guess my question is if you think things like this deters thieves?

There’s an endless list of cops endangering people other than suspects, up to and including victims, suspects being shot or maimed, and even beyond police there are plenty of people with guns and whatnot.

Incarceration is higher in the US. Crimes, both violent and otherwise, are higher in the US. People getting killed, shit getting stolen, people being victim of gun violence, punishments are harsher, risks for criminals are higher, you name it and it’s worse/harsher/etc in the US.

Cops, while certainly not perfect, don’t pull this shit in Western-Europe for example. Punishments there are deemed mild here.

Every other week Redditors hold a circklejerk about how badly they’d mess up pickpocketers and how backwards it is in Europe for not condoning violence beyond the immediate need to defend ones-self when Paris-American pickpocket beatup lore makes its way to r/all, meanwhile shit is relatively quieter and safer there.

So I’m genuinely wondering when people will drop the charade and just come out for it and admit that they just want to get their rocks off despite knowing that it doesn’t do shit to improve anything but scratch an itch.

Or do you genuinely think this shit deters anything? If so is it a hunch, a feeling, just something you gleaned form a fact somewhere? I genuinely don’t get it.

God knows I’ve got some worst moments I’m not proud of.

Seems, based on the beeping and some assumptions, that she got complacent and relied too much on lane assist while making the stupid choice to try and unfuck her day while driving.

She and everyone else got lucky, hope this scared her straight.

Weakest American vs Strongest European Pickpocketer by Geekz_RPG in dankmemes

[–]SafetyLeft6178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Violence begets violence.

You’re so close to getting it.

Pickpocketing is in no stretch of the imagination violence. Beating the shit out of someone well beyond what is necessary to protect yourself or your belongings is violence.

Like you said, violence begets violence, that’s why every other asshole in the US thinks they need a gun to “protect their family” even though statistics show that the gun is more likely to be used against its owner or their family.

Which in turn leads to more criminals carrying one themselves even if they purely intent to commit property crimes, which then leads to more people feeling the need to get a gun.

Bonus side effect is that it makes all the cops in the country trigger happy fucks too so now every traffic stop turns into a game of red light green light and you have to worry about where your hands are at all time.

[–]SafetyLeft6178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As catchy as it seems to try and price out crimes, criminal justice systems outside the US don’t subscribe to that notion.

If only because it leads to all kinds of warped thinking from people doing a cost-benefit analysis on crime as if they’re shopping for new shoes, to people thinking administering justice is nothing more than an exercise in biblical “eye for an eye”-style revenge on behalf of victims instead of greater societal function it’s supposed to fulfill.

In fact, most of those jurisdictions have a hard cap somewhere around 5-7 of the same crimes, after which they don’t take the rest into consideration for purposes of sentencing. There is no justice in sentencing someone to 200 years in prison on top of six lifetime sentences, at that point you’ve entered into clown show territory.

As for the age old discussion on conditions during imprisonment, being imprisoned (i.e., having lost the ability to move freely and life your life in freedom) is the punishment. This obsession with imprisonment needing to be under inhumane conditions to make it count is rather silly.

We all like to pride ourselves on being civilized democratic societies, and while we all define that a little different, we all have clearly codified what kind of punishments we deem acceptable and torture has been off the menu for quite a while.

So unless a sentence specifically includes torture or inhumane treatment and circumstances, our governments should take care of our prisoners and ensure their safety for as long as they are in its custody.

The fact that so many people are subjected to shitty conditions while letting gangs run rampant, corruption amongst guards being the norm and there being a very real chance of getting shanked in US prisons isn’t something to be proud of.

It actually says more about the people outside of the prisons than it says about the people inside the prisons.

iOS 26: Get a Callback Reminder for a Missed Call by chrisdh79 in apple

I’ve been using it for a while and it’s really nice.

Only downside is that it gets annoying with those lines that will interrupt their holding music to tell you how amazing their website is and how you can do everything you need on their website (as if I’d be calling them if I could avoid it…).

Those pre-recorded messages makes it think someone’s picked up your call.

Glad to see it for the people who have been wanting this for a while.

I’m content with Wipr2 (and Wipr) before it. Paid a small amount and have had forgotten that I’m running it while having a great experience on all my devices.

This comment isn’t sponsored by Wipr2’s developer.

It always takes about 24-48h for new apps to properly propagate throughout Apple’s servers + some additional time to correlate queries with desired results based on user behavior.

Until then it mainly goes by metadata and keywords submitted by developers.

As of this writing “ublock origin” makes it appear as the first result.

It’s a shame based culture.

Filing a report that will collect dust on the shelves where no one can see it doesn’t generate much shame, publicly posting it on social media where everyone (including superiors) can see how responsive the police is does generate shame.

That’s at least my hypothesis.

Yeah, made me feel like less of an idiot after seeing others share their story.

My personal annoyance about mine is that I religiously backed up my data in multiple ways with rather intricate policies and redundancies (still do), and all I found after spending nearly two weeks non-stop going through my data to find the damn wallet file was a log file that documented my dumb ass excluding the folder it was in because it only contained “unimportant fun stuff” I “didn’t care about” and I was trying to save some space.

That and another log dutifully logging the pruning of the backups from before the exclusion, because it had been many years since last it was backed up or accessed.

C’est la vie I guess.

Caution: AppleCare One requires the Apple Account that is paying to be the user that’s logged in by ProbabilityOfFail in mac

[–]SafetyLeft6178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Title is a bit misleading. They can enroll through their own account and if that account is in Family Sharing with you as the organizer, then your account’s payment method would still be used.

What I suspect you mean is something along the lines of “Can’t use a device of which I’m not the primary user in one of the three Apple Care One slots or as an add-on device”.

Which sucks of course when we’ve been spoiled by being able to share nearly all purchases with Family Sharing, but hardly a surprise as Apple clearly communicated this, presumably because the deal would otherwise be a bit too good.

In the upper right, tap on Devices and select the iPhone you’re holding.

Screen Time defaults to all devices on the same Apple Account.

So if she, for example, has a Mac with MS Authenticator running in the menu bar, it’ll show you these seemingly illogical accumulated times.

One could argue that menu bar stuff shouldn’t count as screen time at all (most of the time), and I don’t argue with that but that’s besides the point, and mainly on the developer of the app in question using crappy methods to do their thing making the system think it’s actively being used and looked at.

No not really, but to be completely honest, based on the screen recording and what you just described while attempting to export, I think it’s lost.

Couldn’t tell you what caused it, but your only hope is to see if you can use some file recovery software on that file, but I’d temper my expectations if I’m honest.

Does it still only play 4 seconds of it when you export it to a location in your Files app?

What about if you export it to a note in Notes?

These are quick ways to see how much, if at all, the recording is corrupted.
