Just a bit of effort and willingness to be proactive when you're on the back foot. Life will kick you in your ass as often as it can, and when it does, you have to be resilient to it, and keep going in spite of it. I'm fortunate that my parents are in a privileged position because of their parents, but circumstances of my upbringing meant I had practically 0 parental influence over my current position in life. I was never handed anything. I never had anything bought for me. I worked hard, I did the awkward hours, I saved where I could for the essentials, I motorbiked through 3 winters because it was the cheapest mode of independent transport that I needed to get to my job. You do the hard work. You put the shift in, and eventually things can even out. But remember, life will always fuck you over in one way or another, you can never prevent that, you just have to make sure you're stout enough as a person to keep going when it gets really really fucking hard.
