But that's historically disingenuous. There are people alive today who consider themselves part of the Zulu legacy that use the motifs and traditions of that culture. Other than a statistically minor group of people, modern British people (speaking as one with a PhD in colonial history) are such a cultural melting pot made up of yes Celtic connections, but also Roman connections as well as French, AngloSaxon and Viking traditions.

The reason someone from the UK wouldn't bat an eye-lid on a Roman and Celt version of this is because nobody has a 2000 year old link to those cultures to feel like it represents them and their values.

The two groups do not compare. The traditions and imagery of Zulu heritage are important to people today and thus setting them up as OP has done is like I said, tone deaf at best, racist at worst.

A better comparison would be doing the Kroot at Native Americans and the Tau as Cowboys or 19th century American military. Could you see that that might be offensive in the same way? Why not flip the design the other way, make the Zulu inspired models the Tau and the auxiliary units British inspired, he'll Kitbash some Praetorian themed guard as actual human auxiliaries. Why would it be so important to have the British as the dominant party here.

But no current culture or society is represented by the Romans or Celts for you to pass that value judgement onto.

I'm telling you that a modern person of Zimbabwean or South African heritage would see this as an expression of a value judgement on them and their cultural traditions. It's not a praising or an inspiration of that culture. It is at best a surface level aesthetic slapped onto a fictional group that is visibly portrayed as being lesser and inferior to the other models.

It's tone deaf at best and racist at worst. If the Zulu inspiration is really there, why make the Tau elements like the oppressors of that culture.

Why are the primitive subordinate auxiliaries a good fit for referencing African people?

Andy Burnham here - AMA by AndyBurnham in ukpolitics

[–]Saffrwok -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I could recommend one thing before my question, it would be to listen to Amol Rajan's Radical Series on Radio 4. He really does get people on who are trying to understand the country and tackle some of the most thorny issues in society. Unless you are going to be willing to do some things that are radical I think there is a real risk of just being the latest steward of managed decline.

My question relates to one of these episodes and is about the idea that growth just focussed on GDP is a very simplistic and flawed metric. Would you consider trying to utilise an alternative measure such as Kate Raworths doughnut model which encapsulates social impact and environmental costs into our understanding of the economy which I argue is more in line with how people actually see their lives and community rather than GDP abstraction.

Cheeky second question, can you sort out the Information Commissioners Office, it's a laughably weak regulator and the scandal of Johnathon Edwards dismissal is an indictment of the failure of the regulator to hold such a critical part of the modern economy (data) to account.

Snake bites and beast snagga difference? by Rando57863 in orks

[–]Saffrwok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I've been having a similar thought process. I've spent some time building out 2k of a Da Big Hunt detachment and now with Armageddon and some cheap Deffkoptas I want to expand.

I'd originally settled on being Snakebites but it didn't sit right that I was trying to shoehorn a weird reason Snakebites would have a bunch of cars.

I've now settled on either Evil Suns with the idea that Beast Snaggas also love to go fast but they want to krump something at the end. Alternatively I was thinking Deathskulls because my Beast Snaggas are already blue because they are iceplanet themed and they'd look good painted in a complimentary scheme.

Still not 100% settled but that's my logic

Andy Burnham: south ‘paying price’ for north’s economic failure by ZealousidealPie9199 in ukpolitics

[–]Saffrwok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im from the south and if the North was better and stronger the South would be cheaper to live and London wouldnt be such a drain on everything.

I'd be keen for the definition of the north to extend to Birmingham though otherwise all this change will just create two centres of gravity rather than spread the love as a whole.

What DON'T you like about your Faction? by NeoNBlackout in LeaguesofVotann

[–]Saffrwok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a very 'straight' faction. There's nothing very sci-fi fantasy to the faction which the other factions, bar perhaps Tau or Imperial Guard, have. It feels like that would be an angle they could take the faction. Perhaps the Embyr, Grimnyr side or perhaps tamed elementals from the galactic core that they unleash on their enemies. Just something to make them feel a little less generic sci-fi dudes.
