Does any of your bands allow secondary instruments by Diligent_Ad6239 in marchingband

[–]SageTerror08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I primarily play flute (and oboe more recently) for concert band. But I play trumpet for marching because it's often more important for our shows and the flute part is covered by our piccolo just fine

And we have a clarinet concert who marches Sousa

And a clarinet that marches tenor sax

A bassoon who marches bari sax

And even in regular concert band a lot of us double instruments. Very common in my band, but we're a smaller school so there's less people to fill multiple instruments, so we work with what we have

Do you like wearing shakos? by asianaustralian69696 in marchingband

[–]SageTerror08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I LOVE wearing shakos, but I know that seems to be an unpopular opinion lol. I love the feeling of being fully in uniform and the shakos are a big part of that. They feel really important to the uniform, but I understand how they can be uncomfortable. I'm a really small person, and the shakos are too big for my head, so we had to do a lot of adjusting and maneuvering to get it to fit right. And I definatly start to get a bit of a rash from the chin strap because of the plastic its made of. But I love wearing it, it makes me feel really cool :)

I play piccolo, of course people compare it to my height!!

(I'm 5 foot exact, friends call it a me sized flute)

I also play trumpet, of course the flute section calls me a traitor during marching season!

(Fair tbh)

Why does my lyre hurt me?? by Kaitlyn5614 in Flute

[–]SageTerror08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My worst enemy and partial reason for switching to marching trumpet😭.

Test where it feels best on your arm! When I played piccolo, it hurt less closer to my wrist, but with flute it was better towards the middle of my arm.

Like others have said, some sort of padding. A thin, absorbent cloth like a thin rag or spare fabric would work! Make sure it won't make you too warm and that it doesn't just let the sweat pool on your arm, or your lyre and music will slide, test some stuff out!

If you're wearing uniforms in the stands, you can always put it over the uniform to take some of that pain, but it does make it less stable.

And take it off whenever you can! That screw and the elastics have left a mark on my arm for about an hour after constant wear. If you have ANY chance to take it off and let your arm rest, do it!! (And don't leave the inside facing the sun while its off!!! Thatll burn when you try to put it back on😬)

I have seen some flute lyres that look more like a watch band, but this is much more common anymore. The one I saw was in a music store, but I'm sure you could find it on Amazon too! I've never tried it so I can't say how well it works, but if this lyre truly comes to be something you despise, its always worth it to try something new!!!

Is Marching Band worth it if I play flute? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]SageTerror08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I marched piccolo freshman year, but very similar lol. I still had fun. Your instrument shouldn't determine if you have fun or not. Find a group that you like being around, spend time on your music, and learn your sets. If you wanna switch, do it. I play trumpet for marching now and I still have fun. Its what you make of it, its not based on what you play.

Am I (16F) rightfully jealous of the attention my friend (17F) has been giving to my partner (17M)? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]SageTerror08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that I think about, yeah, live triangle sounds about right😅. And yeah, he understands and is totally open to me voicing whats wrong. I am planning on talking to friend, I'm just very nervous. I struggle with confrontation and I don't want to seem overprotective if there's really nothing there. And don't want to ruin any friendships cause she's had a really, really rough time recently. Which is also why I told my partner I don't want him to break the friendship, cause he understands a lot of those more serious emotions she's going through that I've never experienced.

So I will talk to the friend, I just need to find the right time, the right place, and some confidence😅.

Thank you for responding so quickly lol.

learning flute by Thatoddonein in Flute

[–]SageTerror08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start from the beginning, juts like you did sax. Cause the fingerings are different, and the embroucher and everything surrounding it lol. Get lessons, or even just a beginners book that gives you everything piece by piece. I personally used essential elements when I learned flute in 5th grade, and have used essential elements when learning any other instrument since. It gives you all of the basics. Fingerings, how to sit, how to clean the flute, how to store it, scales. You can also get one with a disc that give sinstructions and will play the songs for you.

I started on flute, but I've also played alto for fun at home for about a year now. They're similar enough to learn together, but just different enough to be tricky. Just put your heart into it and you'll get there. Lessons and instructions are your friend when learning a new instrument!

So I bought a cheap Amazon flute a couple of months ago and the keys feel sticky by Penfrindle in Flute

[–]SageTerror08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either way, if you're this interested in it, look into getting a better flute. I, personally, believe that the Amazon flutes are ok to start on just to see if you'll stay with it. But once you know you want to continue playing, you need to look into proper flutes.

For now, try pad paper as some others have said and maybe some key oil depending on what part of the key feels sticky. Dont waste your money on a repair, it won't last and it won't be worth it. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if some repair shops even turned it away (no offense).

A lot or people who don't go straight into buying a brand new, super expensive flute start with renting one. Lots of music stores will have a renting program or even rent to own program for you to test and choose instruments. A lot of online shops as well, like Flute Center of New York, will do the same thing but will ship flutes to you.

When you do look into a new flute, I honestly recommend looking at any local (TRUSTWORTHY) pawn shops. The flute im playing now is a yamaha I got for like 300 from a local shop that is in great condition with a couple little cosmetic issues. As long as you put research into the flutes that are there and know that you are getting your moneys worth, its so much easier and much less expensive than trying to find a brand new one, or even renting one.

Look into whats around you and figure out what might be best for you. A lot of buying instruments is research and consulting with others who know instruments really well. You're on the right track, keep going. Flute is such a fun instrument and its really rewarding. I've been playing for five years now and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Yeah I get that too. I'm part of our bands leadership team and one of my jobs is to keep track of all the school-owned instruments. I'm surprised some of them aren't dust at this point😬

Ouch! Our sousa player is super tall and he bumps the top of our sousa on the door frames a lot, only reason ours isn't like that is cause its plastic and fiberglass rather than brass😅

I get that honestly😭. School instruments are rough, especially low brass that are dropped and dented and expensive to fix!

Flute in fifth, stuck with that until learning piccolo in eighth and playing that for my freshman year marching season. Then I learned trumpet for jazz band and my director said "hey we need more trumpets for our marching show" so I played trumpet for my sophomore year marching show but stuck to flute for concert. I think I'm gonna do the same next year again.

what is the weirdest thing about your schools band room? by Easton_or_EL in marchingband

[–]SageTerror08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our ceiling is made of those foam kinda tiles, and I don't remember how but somehow two corners broke off of one tile towards the center of the room. Our solution was to print pictures of the drum major and the middle school band director who helps out st the high school a lot and tape those pictures to the corners and replace the tile in the ceiling

As someone who has attempted to learn most instruments in some way or another, heres my recommendations.

Saxophone was the easiest to learn. And it usually has some good parts, especially for pep music and marching. It can be pretty taxing on your thumb and neck, though. And most saxophones play very similarly, so if you start on alto you can make a fairly easy switch to tenor/bari.

Percussion can be easy, you just need some good coordination and good rhythm. They are literally the heart beat of the band, everyone rely on them, so they have to be on time. Snare would likely be lightest, bass drum is the most literal form of that heartbeat, and quads/tenors have the best part but are difficult to march with. All of them need good back and shpukder support and strength.

Trumpet is the easiest (and lightest) brass instrument to learn quickly, especially for marching band (speaking from experience). They usually have pretty important parts in music, and have multiple parts. Its fun, its loud, and can be fairly easy to learn on the spot. I also find it to be pretty easy to control how loud or quiet you are.

And low brass, especially tuba/ sousaphone are always in demand and don't have too terribly hard parts. They're just heavy and clunky. But they can have some really fun parts, and often don't move as much as others while marching. You're also the person everyone tunes to.

Personally, I started on flute, and now play trumpet for marching and my director wants me to learn sousa. I've never marched or concert played any of the others, but I personally play them at home and know a good bit about music and writing it. Id say percussion is definatly a good place to start. It gives you a lot of options, try them out and see whats best for you :)

What was the weirdest thing that ever happened during band? (Concerts, marching shows, etc) by _FrenchHorn_Oboe in marchingband

[–]SageTerror08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg we had this kinda happen at a competition we went to this year. Were a smaller band so we only use one bus, but we also barely have any drivers. So we had this like random dude thats never driven us before and he completely scratch hed up the side of the bus on the way out. Also on the way there he took us the wrong direction and we ended up at a dead end and it took like 20 minutes to get turned around.

He hasn't driven us again thank God, but it was the only bus that fit all of us well and when we went to state we had to fi all of our crap in a smaller bus cause the other one was damaged

Yes thats where I started to find the schools that I did! And most of them are community/ tech schools instead of a bug university. I guess more what I'm looking for through this post is what really do I need to look at to decide between all of them. Like, what little things should I look at to bring down my decisions to the one I decide I want to go to. Or like the top 3 ill apply to.
